I hope that many of you will volunteer some of your day during the event to perform demos for the YMCA children-- a strong showing will mean new future players! Anyhow, we will be focusing on net and freestyle again this year, but I am willing to support anyone that wants to get other events going on a "just for fun" basis. With WXPN Radio onsite, and a strong showing of local and footbag related sponsors, the more we do the bigger this event will be in years to come. I hope to improve on last year's 35 competitors, and $550 in total prize money-- which should be an attainable goal with the support that we have received already. Having competitors such as the DC All stars, the Netwreckers, Eric Wulff, and Peter Irish in attendance last year, the competition level was high. Let's get even more players (novice through open) involved this year to further raise awareness of our sport, and to create an even more competitive/informative time for all. Close to Philadelphia, our site is readily accessible to a variety of transportation options for those of you coming from afar. Also, with free lodging at my place (first come first serve), and Hotel discounts available nearby, the Philly Open is a fun, intense, inexpensive tournament to attend. OK, I'll keep this short-- Please check out the events listing under www.footbag.org to get more information on the Philly Open, and feel free to contact me with any additional questions or comments. Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" ; format="flowed" Sender: owner-announce@footbag.org Hey, folks. If you recall, in November I launched a redesigned version of footbag.org with a new membership feature (and much more). Members get tons of benefits, including the ability to find other players' contact information and to be found. I set a goal for myself when I launched that I wanted to have 1,000 members by the end of the year. I guess that wasn't too ambitious since we ended the year with over 900 members! But now I'm pleased to announce, only a few weeks late, that we now have *over* a thousand members -- the current count (as of this writing) is 1,011 members in *46* countries. (You can see the latest total by simply going to your account on footbag.org, at http://www.footbag.org/members/home ). At the bottom is a line that says the current totals and number of countries. In case you haven't noticed, I've also added a few new features, including a somewhat regular "member of the week" spot on the home page (and on what's new). This is a chance to show the *people* behind footbag.org, so that the site becomes more of a community and less of a flat collection of pages of information. There is a lot more that I want to do along those lines, and some of it is actually in progress.. For example, I'm working on a member polling system, so I or anyone can get feedback on various topics of interest in the community. I'm also working on a way for players to weigh in on various things on the site. I already have the beginnings of that feature on the freestyle move list (and a net move list is in the wings). I want to add a rating system to that, though, so that instruction and comments that are considered valuable by the greater community can stand out above random comments that people think are not as important. (If you've seen how some on-line auctions include ratings, this should give you some clue as to what I mean.) More later. Keep those cards and letters coming. :-) Steve P.S. I know a lot of you have still not gotten your free accounts on footbag.org. Being a member is *not* the same as the club list -- *every* footbag player, aficionado, and friend of the sport should have their own account on footbag.org. You get a free e-mail address @footbag.org as well (though you don't get a mailbox -- just a redirect to your real mailbox). There's no reason you shouldn't get an account if you are on this mailing list! You don't have to publish anything about yourself to the community to be a member; but you have to answer some basic questions (like your name and city). As a member, though, your world opens up and you can find phone numbers and e-mail addresses of other footbag players and friends. So, join today!!! http://www.footbag.org/ and click the "Join Footbag WorldWide" link.
