To: announce@footbag.org MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="US-ASCII" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-Mailer: AOL 5.0 for Windows sub 102 Sender: owner-announce@footbag.org The Footbag Hall of Fame Members are proud to announce the nominees who will be voted on in this year's final ballot which will take place in early June: JIMMY CAVENEY, SCOTT CLEERE, TRICIA GEORGE, JEAN HALL, JON LIND, ANDY LINDER, DAVID ROBINSON, DENNIS ROSS, MAX SMITH JR., and BRENDA SOLONOSKI !!! Please join us in honoring and congratulating these great contributors to the growth of YOUR game and sport !! We invite any feedback, individual testimonials, stories regarding these nominees, etc. to BEFORE May 19th, so that this information may be included in the background sent to each of the 29 current Hall of Fame Members before they vote on this final ballot. The results will be announced by 6/10/00 via announce@footbag.org, and to the Footbag Hall of Fame Historical Society membership via mail. The induction dinner is planned as part of the finals at the World Footbag Championships in Vancouver, B.C. on August 20th. Please note the following criteria for this final list of nominees was determined by: 1. That each person received nominations to this email address from the footbag community via announce@footbag.org this year for this year's ballot. The opportunity again given in January to respond by March to this website email address or via mail. The top 5 as determined by multiple nominations from the footbag community via footbag.org to this email address, or via mail sent to this office, were placed on this ballot. This was a criterion, as per a vote of the Footbag Hall of Fame Members, per a criteria ballot vote this year. 2. And/or that the Hall of Fame members voted, per a criteria ballot vote this year, to carry over the top 5 that received votes on the prior year's final ballot, but that did not receive a majority vote and induction in that prior year. 3. That each person had retired from active, open singles net and/or freestyle competition as of January of the voting year. Further to this criteria, the Hall of Fame Members will vote on this final ballot of 10 each year, with induction requiring a 66% majority vote of the actual voting members. Again, we congratulate these honored finalists, and peers, and wish all current players to have a great year in the game and sport of Footbag! Keep on Kickin' and spread YOUR sport further by teaching and promoting !! See you in Vancouver !! We in the OOPS! Footbag Club are rather excited. Why? This coming weekend is the big Southern California Footbag Championships. This is always a fun tournament, located just blocks away from the beach, and only 5 miles from the LA Airport. There are restaurants, bars, grocery stores, everything you need to have a fun footbag tournament weekend all less than a mile from the host hotels. For the net players, our site has not changed so that means that you will be playing on the best turf on the footbag tournament circuit. You might possibly find an event with turf as good as ours, but you will never find better. Our grass is first class. For the freestylers, our freestyle director is Ryan Mulroney. I'm not sure of all the names, but we are expecting a good range of heavy hitting Big Add Posse shredders. Of course, Big Add "Chad" Devlahovich is among the local kickers. And for people who just like a good laugh, although I haven't heard anything from Steve Goldberg, it would suprise the heck out of me if he wasn't coming down. He's been here for every Southern California Footbag Championships since we started holding the event and, as we all know, Steve's a really funny guy. Also, Pam wanted me to tell the group that she's got the usual connections working and our player packs will be stuffed full of CD's of all kinds. And a T-shirt. And Lunch Both days. And lots of fun. .. Friday afternoon, we plan to gather at the site and enjoy pre-tournament kicking. Friday evening the recommended dinner is the Big Wok Mongolian BBQ located on PCH right at the top of Pier Ave. It is basically an all-you-can-eat stir fry place. Big Wok Mongolian BBQ (310) 798-1155 1200 Pacific Coast Hwy, Hermosa Beach, CA 90254 Registration is Saturday morning between 9 and 10am. If you have any questions, please drop me a line. The Southern California Footbag Championships took place this last weekend. It was a riotously good time for all who came down. The sun was shining, the grass was green, the net spikes were high, and the freestyle tricks were phat. Yes, it was a lot of fun. There was one thing about the event that, as a tournament director, I was especially proud of. This tournament started basically on time and ended on time. Both days, our guests and staff(!!) were done and the field picked clean by 6:30pm. You all have been to footbag events in the past where it didn't happen like that. This was the result of a good plan and great execution by both the tournament staff and the players. There never was a time when the net courts were idle. As a result our guests made scheduled flights without missing any tournament action, and the net finals were completed under daylight conditions. Quite amazing, actually. Special thanks go out to the fine people at the Hermosa Beach Parks and Recreation department. They have been extremely kind to us over the years, and this year was no exception. Also thanks go out to Pam Kile who managed to stuff this years players packs even better than she's done in the past. Loads of demo CD's, a hat, and other goodies. Nice job, Pam. This year our event was run by visiting event directors. Both Ryan Mulroney and david Butcher deserve credit for running good clean events that produced results on time with relatively no complaints or headaches. Thank you Ryan and david. And, of course, the big thanks go out to our guests. Without guests a tournament is just a regular practice session. We run those every week. Hosting this event is a special thing to us in OOPS! land and it is the visitors that make it so. Thank you for coming down. Now here is the point where everybody has skimmed down to. "Where are the results, Rex?" Sorry, but I need to talk to the event directors. They will be posted as soon as they are available. This is that "other kind" of post-tournament announcement. Kick on, everybody. We had strong sponsorship, and were able to post total cash prizes of $900! Nice weather prevailed this year (except for some wind on day two) and we had a nice turnout. With 35 competitors, and at least 20 other players that just came for the fun, I am looking forward to holding the event again next year. Before getting into the results, a couple of highlights and thanks... First and foremost, I want to thank my girlfriend, Megan Hanna, for being a trooper throughout the whole ordeal. She helped out with every little thing imaginable, and is without question one of the greatest people I know. I could not have done it all without her. Thanks also to Neil Payne, Dan Kramer, Steve Goldberg, and Kaiser Ahmad, for running and judging freestyle. They all did a terrific job and asked for nothing in return. The same goes to Vince Bradley, Ainto, and Garth Smith, for running the net events-- I found out that running net is not my forte, so their help was necessary and extremely appreciated (Vince.. I promise I'll learn it though!). For everyone involved, one of the nicest surprises of the weekend was getting to meet Garret- a name we'll all soon know. He made a valiant world record attempt at most consecutive kicks, and was a great help in giving me a hand with line painting. We all look forward to his next attempt at Eastcoasts coming up April 29-30th. Finally, thanks to each and every player that made the trip. This year's Philly Open was one of my favorite tournaments for one reason in particular-- the hangout factor. At the Philly Open, all the players made a big effort to be together not only during play, but also for dinners and parties too. This is what makes the sport so great-- getting to meet new people, hang out with old friends, and learn more about them and about footbag-- so thanks to all of you for being super cool. A side note: Those of you that came from afar... I owe you a trip to your neck of the woods (that means you Montrealers, and folks from IL among others)! **************************************************************************** *************************** OK, here's the results: **************************************************************************** *************************** 2nd Annual Philly Open Results World Record Attempt: Garrett Young, 25,457 kicks (ended by a ceiling foul) Big Combo ( Phat Trick Take 2 ) 1. First of all, we could not have done as well this year without the help of our sponsors. Sal's Pizza box ((610) 933-0600) and the Trappe Tavern (www.trappetavern.com) did a great job keeping up with all of our food demands, as well as donating to tournament costs. Bike Sport (www.bikesportbikes.com) helped out for the second straight year by donating, among other things, nice water bottles for all of our players. Y100 radio (www.y100.com) was again kind enough to come and play us some tunes, and donate some prizes. Having them on site is always a good time, and we hope they will return next year. Trappe Beer and Soda ((610) 489-2070) was nice enough to donate water for our players, as well as a cash donation. Funtastik Sports, courtesy our friends Brenda and Joe Solonoski were graceful enough to send a very nice box of player prizes. Again, we cannot thank the Phoenixville YMCA enough for use, once again, of their beautiful facility. Schuylkill Valley Sports did a great job printing our shirts at cost, and we cannot thank Ethan Klein's friend Kevin (Kevin, if you get this, drop me a line... I have a shirt for you) for the artwork that he donated for the shirt designs (everyone loved the design Kevin!!). Sipa Sipa (www.sipasipa.com) stepped up and donated footbags and stickers for all the players, and some extras that I was able to give away to interested YMCA youths. Once again, one of our biggest supporters was Dennis of Rainbow Imports-- his Dirtbags and other assorted products were on sale to support tournament costs, as well as being used as prizes. Also, I cannot say enough about Diana of Full Moon Fashion (fullmoonfashion@yahoo.com). She provided not only a huge canopy tent for our vending and registration booth, but also set up her own professional vending booth. Her help through the whole weekend and the level of professionalism she added truly makes her a friend of our sport. Finally, I want to thank Ted Huff of the Footbag Hall of Fame for providing hall of fame shirts for prizes, and others on sale at discounted prices- - they're really sweet shirts (more info, email Ted at FootbagHallofFame@footbag.org). And last but certainly not least... Thanks to the WFA. Everyone.. You all ROCK!! Thanks from the bottom of my surgically repaired heart!!!! See you next year :-) Sincerely, Bob Riefer From owner-announce@list.footbag.org Fri Apr 21 20:17:13 2000 Received: (from majordom@localhost) by list.footbag.org (8.9.3/8.9.3) id UAA01481 for announce-outgoing; Fri, 21 Apr 2000 20:17:13 -0700 X-Authentication-Warning: list.footbag.org: majordom set sender to owner-announce@footbag.org using -f Received: from c014.sfo.cp.net (c014-h003.c014.sfo.cp.net [209.228.12.67]) by Market.NET (8.9.3/8.9.3) with SMTP id TAA05056 for ; Fri, 21 Apr 2000 19:39:23 -0700 Received: (cpmta 29010 invoked from network); 21 Apr 2000 19:39:25 -0700 Received: from 63-248-119-229.usa3.flashcom.net (HELO ul2ju) (63.248.119.229) by smtp.flashcom.net with SMTP; 21 Apr 2000 19:39:25 -0700 X-Sent: 22 Apr 2000 02:39:25 GMT From: "Mike Stoler" To: Subject: [announce] Southern California Footbag Championships in the Local Newspaper Date: Fri, 21 Apr 2000 19:44:03 -0700 Message-ID: <000601bfac04$9ee99ca0$e577f83f@flashcom.com> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-Priority: 3 (Normal) X-MSMail-Priority: Normal X-Mailer: Microsoft Outlook 8.5, Build 4.71.2173.0 X-Mimeole: Produced By Microsoft MimeOLE V5.00.2919.6600 Importance: Normal Sender: owner-announce@footbag.org Hello Happy Footbag People. One of our two local weekly free papers in our are has an article about the recent Southern California Footbag Championships. For those who want to travel further, there is a beautiful picture of Jimmy Caveney sponching right into the net. The caption in the printed copy reads "Jimmy Caveney of Mountain View charges the net in Saturday's semifinals..." but the online copy says that Jimmy "strikes with main force". No explanation for that editorial change. It is still a sponch. The url is: http://easyreader.hermosawave.net/news2000/0420/HBFOOT04.asp Kick on, Rex
