Only 4 more days till the 4th Annual IOWA JAM!!!! So bust out the camping gear, the drums, the kerosene, all those Sipa-Sipas you've gotten at tournaments, and get ready to light 'em up for the 4th Annual Spring Edition of the IOWA JAM camp and groove-a-thon, June 9th-11th! The site is the same as it's always been, remote *private* farmland deep in a clearing between valleys in the beautiful rolling hills of Eastern Iowa. There's a small pond for fishing, if you're into that, plus the Maquoketa river is only a jump away. There's always the Maquoketa Caves State Park just down the road, which boasts many various caves, from walk-through caves, to 'get-down-on-your-knees-and-crawl-and-get-ready-to-get-muddy' type of caves. If you've never been there and you have the means, I *highly* recommend it. The deal is the same; camping, fun, sun, good friends, green grass, outdoors, music, footbag, green grass, more friends, more footbag, more music, beer,......mmmmmmmmm.....beeeeeer.....argrhgrhgrhghgr......beeeeeeeeeeeeeeer. No 'official' tournaments of any sort, no entry fees (maybe a small donation to cover kegs), no world records. Just a whole buch of people gettin' nutty and down to Earth. Of course, there will be plenty of net games being played, and freestyle, too!! (Scot D has told he'll be there) Who knows, I may even bust the Laver's out of retirement. I'm hoping to get an 'official' band to come and play.....similar to the first year in '97. As usual, there will be the inevitable drum jams and such, so bring your musical instruments, too! So, free up the calendar, and be ready for IOWA JAM2000!!! It's pretty much an open invite to all who want to come, but please *do not* post this on bulletin boards or other websites. I don't need 1000 people showing up. The footbag community is a 'close-knit' family sort of group, so if you're on this list, you're openly invited. I'm just making sure I don't end up hosting 'Woodstock 2000' with a million people. The Hovey's (owners of the land) have always been gracious in their hospitality of letting us use the land, and as long as we keep it controlled and pick up after ourselves, I'm sure this will go on for a longtime. mail me up directly for more info, questions, or directions. If you feel you may be bringing too many people, mail me up and let me know. I've never turned anyone away, I'm sure we can handle it. I've got some flyers made up with directions and such, so I can get you those if you want more specs'. (plus, I've got an on-line link, so you could print it out yourself. But you'll have to mail me for that one). So hopefully we'll see you there!!! Alone or with a partner, for hours at a time, they practice body-bending, mind-boggling moves with exotic names: flying clipper, mirage, paradox, drifter and torque. Young and old, male and female, they meet and compete, performing graceful feats of balance and dexterity that at times seem to defy gravity. Some travel to other countries to play for trophies, prize money and prestige at sanctioned tournaments where records are broken and world champions are named. Others play just for fun on street corners or school yards in a circle of friends. "Peace through play," is their mantra. A round, soft, knit sack a little larger than a golf ball is the object of their attention. Welcome to a high-energy world of stalls, serves, dragon fly kicks, spins, swirls, whirls and da-da curves. Welcome to the world of Hacky Sack or footbag, as those who partake seriously prefer their sport to be called. And some, such as Bob Riefer, a pro-level player and the organizer of the second annual Philly Open Footbag Championships, take the sport very seriously. Riefer's two-day competition in Phoenixville, Pa., drew 40 participants in March, with athletes at all levels of ability competing. Although many meets include four or five major divisions of the game of footbag, the Phoenixville competition focused on only two: freestyle and net. Unless you've seen the athletes in action, it's hard to visualize. Freestyle footbag is an athletic and artistic performance similar to rhythmic gymnastics or figure skating, but with the added dimension of trying to keep a Hacky Sack aloft using only the feet. Athletes compete alone or in pairs, performing a series of complicated kicks and jumps to upbeat music usually of the rap genre or Dave Matthews variety. They're judged on not only the difficulty of the moves, but their originality, creativity and musical timing, Riefer says. "It's incredible to do it because I'm . . . removed from my normal self and world for two minutes -- it's an adrenalizing experience, especially at the higher levels." In team games such as net footbag, there is no music, but teams work together using many of the same complicated freestyle moves to get the footbag back and forth over the net. Circle of friends Hopewell teens Matt Consoli, Jeff Mills and Jamie Cooper and their circle of friends practice all these difficult moves, sometimes with great success. They don't compete, at least not yet. In fact they had no idea that serious tournaments are held regularly all over the world. They didn't know about the Phoenixville meet where they could have seen the two reigning world footbag champions or 21-year old Garrett Young make an admirable stab at the world record for consecutive kicks. Young, by the way, completed 26,000 simple kicks before the footbag hit the ground (the record is 63,326). "I can hardly even get four," said Cooper, hinting at the difficulty level in this sport. Although at the elite level it's mind-boggling to watch, even at the recreational level, the game is great fun. The Hopewell hacky-sackers usually gather informally in groups on the street corner or the school yard for impromptu games which usually take the form of a circle of kids, kicking around the footbag, trying to not let it touch the ground. "We usually just play elimination," Cooper explains. "Three different people have to kick the hacky, then the third person has to kick it and hit somebody with it . . . the person it hits is out." To clarify the terminology, at the elite level, the sport is officially called footbag. But, if you're just hanging with the gang at the local school yard, it's OK to call it Hackey Sack, which is actually the name of the bag itself, manufactured by Wham-O Toys, Inc. Popularity soaring There are 291 clubs in 33 countries listed on the Footbag Worldwide Web site, according to Steve Goldberg, co-chairman of the International Footbag Committee (the governing body that sanctions local, regional and world championships). The United States leads the pack with 257 of the clubs in almost every state. There are nine in New Jersey, but California is considered the "hotbed" for footbag with 32 clubs. Canada has 45 clubs, Finland has 41 and Germany has 20. There are two clubs in Siberia, one in Malaysia and one in South America. Many of the newer clubs listed are not official yet, some are just starting up and are trying to attract members, according to Goldberg, who is also the president of Footbag Worldwide, a service of the World-Wide Footbag Foundation Inc. Members of the Siberian Footbag Club (yes, it's really is in Siberia) are working on "all the possible and impossible moves," according to Aleksander Shapovalov, the club's organizer. "I think our level is pretty high . . . we could successfully compete with teams from other countries. "I think that what we do looks approximately like the pictures you can find on the footbag-related Web sites." Shapovalov and his friends are hoping interest in footbag will grow in Siberia. He's encouraged that, just like the players in Hopewell, a casual game on a street corner often acts like a magnet, drawing many others in. The Siberians practice a lot and are serious about their game, but they don't have any plans to attend major competitions in other parts of the world in the near future. "We just do not have any funds to go somewhere," says the 20-year-old law student at Novosibirsk State University. The Siberians, especially, appreciate that the sport can be played just about anywhere. With a preference for the net version, they often play outdoors "because we have no gym," Shapovalov says. "In the summer, we like to play net on the beach of the river in the sand, without any shoes." They keep on kicking right through winter, too, however, even when the temperature drops to around -40 degrees Celsius. `Crazy-mad feet' Hacky-sackers can be found in warmer climates as well. In Argentina, Christian Malik reports that they recently started out with only two members. Malik and his friend Lucas work hard to master the moves in the game they call "pies locomaniacos" (crazy-mad feet). Malik, 19, has been playing for about three years, his friend only three months. The college-bound students have never been to an official tournament, but Malik has played all over the world when he travels with his family and keeps in touch internationally via the Internet with other players. Even in Malaysia, they're hacky-sacking, although Awin Lim and his friends prefer to play a "more acrobatic" form of the game called "Sepak Takraw," which is popular throughout Southeast Asia, according to Lim. Back in the states, members of a start-up club in Haddonfield are excited about the possibilities. Mark Ettore who heads the Inner Circle club said they are "not very advanced at all." However, the 17-year-old likes to practice "juggling" freestyle everyday after school for about 20 minutes before running off to track practice. He's working on the clipper stall move, which he considers "a very hard move to master." Ettore, who is hoping to attract more players, is confident his club will grow, especially if more major events are held closer to home. Competition abounds There are plenty of opportunities for competition -- about 50 sanctioned and unsanctioned events locally, nationally and internationally each year. Most competitions usually include single freestyle, doubles freestyle, net and golf footbag events. Ability levels range from beginners to the professionals and a system of "peer judging" is utilized. While males dominate the sport, females are getting into the act, too. "There was only one woman competitor this year (at the Philly Open) . . . there were five last year . . . she competed against men and had a male partner for doubles net, winning the intermediate category," Riefer says. The Philly Open attracted players from California, Georgia, West Virginia, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and even Montreal where most of the best players live, Riefer says. Truly serious players often pack up their footbags and rack up the frequent-flier miles as they head off to destinations such as Montreal, New Zealand and Zurich where recent competitions have been held. Although many "circle kickers," such as the players in Siberia and Hopewell, play strictly for fun, others compete for the prestige, prize money and trophies. An American original Footbag has been around for almost 30 years, which surprises most of the younger players. "I thought it was something new," says Jeff Mills, one of the Hopewell group. It all started in 1972 when John Stalberger met Mike Marshall who had been kicking around a hand-made beanbag. Stalberger needed a way to improve his flexibility after a knee injury. They got together, became good friends and named their new game "Hack the Sack." After redesigning the small footbag, they marketed it as the Hacky Sack. At the age of 28, Marshall died of a heart attack. Stalberger ultimately sold the rights for the Hacky Sack footbag to Kransco (under the Wham-O Toy label), and, with the help of others, formed the National Hacky Sack Association. Interest in the freestyle type of play grew, the net version developed and a sport was born. "After its introduction in the '70s, circle kicking became huge in the early '80s when the Hacky Sack became a fad product," says Goldberg. The sport then lost momentum for quite a few years. Over the last 10 years, however, freestyle footbag has "exploded exponentially . . . although circle kicking is still the most popular form," Goldberg says. "The advanced levels of play are incredible to most people . . . evolving to a point nobody would have imagined even five years ago. "It's such a technical sport now . . . it used to be about flowing moves, mostly composed of kicks, spins, and jumps, but the bulk of today's advanced players do amazing tricks involving every part of their body, legs circling the bag while it's in the air with amazing precision." Goldberg credits "pioneers like Rippin' Rick Reese and Kenny Shults" with inventing most of the difficult footbag moves seen today. Although net is the fastest growing segment of the sport, Goldberg says it has not reached "critical mass" in terms of players. "We have up to 200 net players at the World Championships on a good year . . . the sport is spreading fast to Europe . . . the European Championships this year will be much larger than ever before, bolstered primarily by large clubs of net players in Finland, Denmark and The Netherlands," Goldberg explains. Goldberg credits the Internet with helping the sport to grow so quickly. Not only can players log onto the discussion groups where they can communicate with the pros, they can also watch videos to get the basics down quickly, he says. Riefer saw the benefits at the March competition. "It was neat to see a lot of new players who came out of the woodwork and could play at a fairly high level already . . . things are catching on . . ." Despite its growing popularity, Goldberg says "footbag is always going to be an `alternative' sport . . . if for no other reason than the less-than-compelling name." Goldberg's ultimate goal for the sport isn't about numbers; it's more about credibility. "There's no telling where the sport will really go. Those of us who have spent much of our lives promoting it have really done so more out of a need to see the sport get respect for its athleticism, to show the world what a great thing we have going." Goldberg keeps so busy promoting footbag recently, he hardly has any time to practice the game he loves. "It's the first time in 10 years that I haven't played footbag consistently at least three times a week," Goldberg says. `Peace through play' What's the appeal of this unusual sport? One is just that -- it's unusual. "It feels good to be part of a completely new sport that really isn't related to any other discipline on the planet," says Goldberg. Another appeal is the game's affordability. Special facilities, expensive equipment, uniforms and footwear are not required. The footbag itself costs as little as $5, although enthusiasts can get carried away and pay up to $30 for a wildly patterned custom bag. Like the special sneakers and clothing, Hacky Sacks can be purchased at sporting goods stores or ordered online. For the more industrious, instructions for constructing your own footbag, complete with crochet hook size and crocheting instructions ara also available. That's what they do in Siberia -- they make their own. "We do not use any catalogs, it is usually quite expensive to order something . . . even delivery will cost you a bunch of money . . . the stores in Novosibirsk don't carry footbags," says Shapovalov. "We make both leather and cloth ones. It takes about an hour . . . we also make nets by ourselves. Everything is very simple." Everything except the moves, that is. That's the main appeal of the sport -- its difficulty level, which sometimes also serves as a deterrent to the less daring. Footbag requires top-level aerobic conditioning and quick reflexes obtained only by a strong sense of commitment and a lot of practice time. What makes footbag so much more difficult than most sports is that it also requires ambidexterity. "You simply can't compete in the top echelons of this sport without mastering the use of both legs," Goldberg says. "Also, you're not just playing with your feet, but you're also standing on them . . . balance is incredibly important . . ." Another appeal of this grueling sport is it's gentle mentality. At the Phoenixville event, hand in hand with the high level of graceful athleticism, was an inspiring sense of camaraderie. If someone dropped his footbag in the middle of a routine, fellow players and spectators alike clapped in encouragement and shouted "great job" for the effort already presented. Unlike many other sports, in footbag this supportive, positive atmosphere rules because of . . . well, the rules! The official rule book actually states that the philosophy of footbag is "peace through play." If a competitor is rude or disrespectful, he is not allowed to play. But, above all, it is the sport's challenging nature and also the challenge of nature that keeps athletes coming back for more. "Footbag keeps me in better shape than any other sport, but Kenny Shults said it best," Riefer says. "No matter how good you get, gravity always wins -- you'll never be unchallenged by this sport. No matter how well you perform, you're going to drop the ball." THE GREATER MEETING OF UNITY, RELAXATION AND FOOTBAG (SMURF) takes place June 24 and 25, The Phoenixville YMCA, Pothouse Road, Phoenixville, Pa. phone number ----- end of article ... story ended a little abrubply. :-( Maybe it was just too long for the Trenton Times' website. :-) Hope you got this far. It was generally a good article, though clearly there's not a good distinction made between net and freestyle and other forms of the sport. It's all kind of smerged together. But that's okay -- at least it doesn't make fun of the sport. :-) Steve From owner-announce@list.footbag.org Wed Jun 14 10:18:46 2000 Received: (from majordom@localhost) by list.footbag.org (8.9.3/8.9.3) id KAA04582 for announce-outgoing; Wed, 14 Jun 2000 10:18:46 -0700 X-Authentication-Warning: list.footbag.org: majordom set sender to owner-announce@footbag.org using -f Received: from smtp4.kolumbus.fi (smtp4.kolumbus.fi [193.229.0.39]) by Market.NET (8.9.3/8.9.3) with ESMTP id MAA24408 for ; Tue, 13 Jun 2000 12:33:46 -0700 Received: from footbag (kg47u2hel.dial.kolumbus.fi [193.229.46.47]) by smtp4.kolumbus.fi (8.9.0/8.9.0) with SMTP id WAA15175 for ; Tue, 13 Jun 2000 22:33:09 +0300 (EET DST) Message-ID: <02a701bfd56c$b4193b80$e97ee5c1@footbag.pp.kolumbus.fi> Reply-To: "Finnish Footbag Association" From: "Justin Sexton" To: announce@footbag.org Subject: [announce] Results: Turku Open 2000 (Finland) Date: Tue, 13 Jun 2000 22:22:23 +0300 MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit X-Priority: 3 X-MSMail-Priority: Normal X-Mailer: Microsoft Outlook Express 4.72.3110.1 X-MimeOLE: Produced By Microsoft MimeOLE V4.72.3110.3 Sender: owner-announce@footbag.org Here are the results of the Turku Open 2000 in Turku, Finland: ----------------------------------------------------------------- Freestyle 1. Summer Meeting of Unity Relaxation and Footbag!!!! The SMURF!!! http://www.footbag.org/events This weekend, June 24th and 25th, marks the 1st SMURF of the summer. What we hope will become an eastcoast tradition, the SMURF is a low key hangout and footbag event for all types of players with all types of skill levels. Also, all friends of footbag are welcome (musical instruments are also extremely welcome!). This is truly a democratic event, in that it is for the players, and completely run by the players. I happen to be hosting the event, but other than telling people they can't pee on my coffee table, I am not running a formal event. Our goal is to become incredibly wiped out from playing a ton of footbag, and then from staying up late talking to new and old friends. Camping is the key for this weekend. There are many extra tents being brought (but please bring more if you have them) and we will be warming by the bonfire at night, and rising with the sun au natural in the morning to kick some more. Just bring yourself, blankets etc., a tent if you have it, and a couple bucks to chip towards whatever we eat each night. People are showing up beginning Friday night at about 6:00 onward, so make your plans and come have a great time. See the events listing at www.footbag.org for driving directions etc. Please only email me if you've already looked at the web page and done some common sense research of your own... and then still have a question. Talk to you all soon, and see you sooner! They'll appreciate it -- as long as you don't pat *too* hard. :-) --------------------- B. REGISTRATION: The best way to register in using the brand new online registration system: ** Click here: http://www.footbag.org/registration/register?tid=941418343 ** Because the online registration system is "brand new", you will not be able to pay using your credit card *yet*. So, you have two choices: (1) register now (and finalize your registration online), and when online payment is ready, you'll get e-mail inviting you to return to the site and pay online at that point (before August 7th), or (2) register now (and finalize your registration online), and *mail in* an international money order (in CDN $) to the KFA c/o 125 E. 24th Ave., Vancouver, BC, V5V 1Z5, Canada Either way, there's no reason not to register online as soon as you know which events you're playing. ** The online registration system requires IE or NS 4.0 or better, with javascript enabled. If you don't have these requirements, please find someone who has this and use their computer to register. It's worth the time to use the online system, for you and the organizers. ** You can track who has registered so far (which may help you in your search for a partner :-)) by going to: http://www.footbag.org/registration/regsummary?tid=941418343 -- please note, however, that you should not just assume someone is willing to play with you if you see that they are partnerless. When you register, please only select someone as you partner if you've talked to them about it and are sure they are willing to play with you! (Boy, that can be embarrassing, let me tell you. :-)) The link above will show you who's registered, and for each person you can click on their name to see a pop-up window that gives you their contact information. That's how you can initiate a discussion as to whether or not they want to play with you. If you absolutely can't register online, you can print out and mail in the registration form by going to the Worlds website at http://www.footbag.org/worlds2000 and scrolling around until you find the printable entry form. The detailed mail-in directions are on the registration form. There's no need to repeat them here; 'cause you shouldn't be using it. You should be using online registration. :-) ** All entries must be received by AUGUST 7th in order to avoid the late registration fee of $10 US. You can register instantly using the online registration system, or you can mail in a printable entry form on the website. HOWEVER, note that your entry must be received *either way* by August 7th. ** Important: pre-registration is all about telling us you're coming and committing your entry fee for the main event in advance. It is *not* required that you know all your partners. It's okay to leave blanks on your registration form. Please don't let this stop you from pre- registering! The Monday-morning check-in on August 14th is the final deadline for selecting your partners. Don't wait until then to register just because you don't know who your partners will be. Most of you probably already know which events you are planning to play in -- so please register *today*. Of course, if you have to scratch an event, you will be refunded when you check in on Monday. (No refunds will be given if you scratch *after* check-in.) By pre-registering, you are *greatly* helping our Vancouver hosts put on the best possible event -- and it will make everyone's lives that much easier on the first day of the event. So -- if you plan to mail your registration in (though that'd be silly since we have an easy-to-use online way to register!), you must be sure to send it early enough so that it arrives by the deadline. There will be no exceptions -- we will charge US $10 extra for any late entries. If you are in Europe or Asia, please allow the appropriate amount of time for your mail to be delivered to Vancouver, and please use air mail. (Or, broken record here: use the online registration system.) CHECK-IN: *ALL PLAYERS* must check in on Monday, August 14th, to confirm your pre-registration and to finalize your partners, events, and categories. If appropriate, you will be refunded or asked to pay the difference for any changes from your pre-registration. As long as you are pre-registered, there will be no fees for changes; i.e., you can add events by simply paying the additional per-event fee. *IF YOU CANNOT CHECK IN ON MONDAY* that is okay, but you *MUST* get someone else to check in for you. This is because the staff will simply not have the resources to maintain a check-in desk throughout the week. Registration and check-in is a very complex process and we request your cooperation to help make the Vancouver team's lives as stress-free as possible during that week. To that end, PLEASE take it on yourself to arrange for a friend or partner to check you in on Monday if you cannot be there. Try to use the resources at your disposal on footbag.org to find people who may be able to help you before you put in a special request to the Worlds committee asking for special late check-in. --------------------- C. BOOSTER CLUB For the brief history of this sport, almost all of our funding has come from individuals or companies that have been generous and have had the attitude of helping us out. Someday, we truly hope to elevate this sport to a position where sponsors are clamoring for the chance to be a part of our events. Until then, we will continue to rely on help -- from companies, organizations, competitors, friends, and family. As someone who's helped run my fair share of world championships, I can tell you that while it may *seem* a low-cost event in the grand scheme of things, the economic realities of holding an event of this magnitude in a big city like Vancouver are utterly staggering to the small team of local dedicated players and organizers. By accepting this project, our friends in the Kitsilano Footbag Association have taken a serious economic risk onto themselves. To that end, we are asking those of you who are able to help out to join our "Booster Club" to consider adding an extra amount to your registration to support the event and to help offset costs and allow for frills and niceties. (If you are not competing, please contact Juliet Pendray directly at aloe@intouch.bc.ca if you wish to join the Booster Club, or use the online registration system for just that one item). Here's how it works: - basic member: $10 - name in huge list in program (fine print) - advanced member: $30 - name in huge list (bold) - superior member: $100 US or more - A complimentary ticket to the Hall of Fame Awards dinner and Celebration, Sunday August 20th - A goodie bag of Worlds 2000 memorabilia and Booster Club certificate of recognition. - Your name (or choice of designation :-) in the Worlds Booster Club Honour Roll, posted on the Worlds website and in the event program - exhalted member: $150 US or more - Two complimentary tickets to the Hall of Fame Awards dinner and Celebration, Sunday August 20th - A goodie bag of Worlds 2000 memorabilia and Booster Club certificate - Your name (or choice of designation :-) in the Worlds Booster Club Honour Roll, posted on the Worlds website and in the event program. - An after-worlds thank-you photo package. - supreme exhalted ruler: $500 US or more - A big fat kiss on the cheek, as well as all of the above :-) To all of you who are not in a position to help us out this year, or if you simply don't want to -- that's *okay*! We appreciate the other support you are giving us by coming, being part of the event, and helping move this sport forward! --------------------- .. and that about covers it! I look forward to seeing all of you again this year, and especially to meeting some of you new folks who've joined us over the last year or so.
