Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" ; format="flowed" Sender: owner-announce@footbag.org Hi, everyone. This is just a quick note to let you know that the sport really is growing. :-) As of this moment, there are over 2500 registered accounts on footbag.org -- phenomenal growth given that the membership service began only 8 months ago. I'm sure there are some fake and duplicate accounts, or ones that have since gone defunct, and I'll be doing some data clean-up to get rid of those accounts (not as easy as you'd think). But in general, this is a great testimony to the power of the internet to bring a virtual community of people together and to spread our culture and sport around the world. Because of the upcoming European Championships, and Eric Dargent's patience as we beta-tested the IFC's new online registration system for that tournament, we have seen the number of European registrations for footbag.org rise dramatically. I expect this to even be more impressive *after* the tournament, since there will likely be thousands of spectators given the amazing promotional work Eric and all our great footbag promoters in Europe have been doing! The European championships is July 14-16 in Paris for anyone who reads this from Europe. I strongly recommend you make the trip -- try to get there a day early because Paris on July 14th is hell. :-) Not only will some of the best players from sport be representing at this tournament, but all the top players in Europe will be there, and this is a *great* chance to get hooked into the incredible growing footbag scene in Europe! You guys in Russia, I know it's a long way, but if you could go that'd be *sweet*. See you. Thanks for all your support of footbag.org -- it's your site as much as mine. Watch for even more to come. Steve P.S. Thanks in no small part to Brian Kimball helping me pick the right memory chips and diagnose a databsae problem (even though he claims to know nothing about databases), footbag.org is now *back to normal*. If you have experienced errors or lengthy delays in the last few months as you've gone to the site, I'm happy to report the site is screamingly fast now! (Your mileage may vary. Offer void in certain Eastern European countries and on computers using 1200 baud modems or running ancient operating systems. :-)) From owner-announce@list.footbag.org Sat Jul 1 21:36:15 2000 Received: (from majordom@localhost) by list.footbag.org (8.9.3/8.9.3) id VAA15335 for announce-outgoing; Sat, 1 Jul 2000 21:36:15 -0700 X-Authentication-Warning: list.footbag.org: majordom set sender to owner-announce@footbag.org using -f Received: from zeus.ihermes.com (zeus.ihermes.com [206.180.207.1]) by Market.NET (8.9.3/8.9.3) with ESMTP id NAA18803 for ; Sat, 1 Jul 2000 13:16:14 -0700 Received: from default ([206.180.207.122]) by zeus.ihermes.com (8.10.1/8.10.1) with SMTP id e61KGCw24067 for ; Sat, 1 Jul 2000 13:16:12 -0700 Message-ID: <002801bfe398$bd389780$53cfb4ce@default> From: "Chris Eddicott" To: Subject: [announce] Worlds 2000 Date: Sat, 1 Jul 2000 13:12:05 -0700 MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" X-Priority: 3 X-MSMail-Priority: Normal X-Mailer: Microsoft Outlook Express 4.72.3612.1700 X-MimeOLE: Produced By Microsoft MimeOLE V4.72.3612.1700 Sender: owner-announce@footbag.org Greetings on behalf of the Worlds 2000 organizing committee! Also, while it *is* possible to check e-mail 10000 meters over the polar ice caps on the way there, I don't particularly intend to. :-) So, please don't expect the usual prompt reply. :-) If you have problems with footbag.org, please be patient. When I get back online, I'll fix it. :-) The last thing I need is a hundred e-mails from a hundred well-meaning souls telling me my site is down. Believe me, I will check it as soon as I get online so you don't even need to tell me if it's down over the next week. (Please.) Also, if you have questions about the footbag discussion list, please e-mail Brian Kimball, bfk@footbag.org. For questions about worlds registration, please talk directly to the registration committee via worlds@footbag.org. Or see the website -- there's tons of useful information on there. http://www.footbag.org/ Finally, if you need to know about your recent footbag order -- for the fiftieth time, footbag.org is not the same as worldfootbag.com, so please don't even think about asking me. The tournament was a great success. We ended up having 22 competitors from 4 different states. Each competitor received a tournament T, a 4-panel Paul Mestas sandbag, a certificate for a free smoothie, and a couple of other little goodies. The tournament even got a little write up in the Idaho State Journal. This paper is online, but the story has already been replaced by a newer one. Anyone who really wants to see it can email me personally, and I will email you the link when they put it in their archive section. Unfortunately, it isn't there yet. The break down for various events is as follows: Beginners Consecutives: (best consecutive string of kicks in 5-min time limit) 1) Ryan Burt (504) Idaho Falls, ID GO ADVANCED!!! 2) Eagan Heath (298) Idaho Falls, ID GO ADVANCED!!! 3) Cameron Dowie (81) Salt Lake City, UT 4) Jesse 'J-Dog' Wychules (80) Pocatello, ID Beginners 3-on-3 Team Consecs.: (Two tries for best run as a team) 1) The Potatoes (520) Eagan Heath Idaho Falls, ID Kelsey Duncan Idaho Falls, ID Ryan Burt Idaho Falls, ID 2) Funktabulous (37) Nick Hofeldt Pocatello, ID Wayne Hofeldt Pocatello, ID Jesse Wychules Pocatello, ID 3) Fingerbang (16) (apparent South Park fans) Sera White Pocatello, ID Kristin Gohl Pocatello, ID Mike Johnson Pocatello, ID Beginners Freestyle: 1) Cameron Dowie Salt Lake City, UT 2) Ryan Burt Idaho Falls, ID 3) Eagan Heath Idaho Falls, ID 4) Kelsey Duncan Idaho Falls, ID Advanced Consecutives: (standard 5-min timed consec rules) 1) Jon Schneider (604) Boulder, CO 2) Jim Penske (519) Rexburg, ID 3) Jim Pomey (510) Salt Lake City, UT 4) Spencer Behm (452) Evans, WA Advanced Freestyle: 1) Daryl Genz Westminster, CO 2) Jon Schneider Boulder, CO 3) Jim Penske Rexburg, ID 4) Luke Anderson Salt Lake City, UT Aside from the competition aspect of the tournament, the tournament in and of itself was just a lot of FUN. Footbag in Idaho got a little piece of recognition in the eye of the general public, and a lot of area shredders are totally inspired right now. With the exception of saying that I heard 15 year old Jim Penske hit his first barfly after being shown what one was THAT DAY, I really don't know too much of what was hit. I was just a little too busy running around. With that said, I'll leave move re-caps to Jim Penske, Jon Schneider, and whoever else is on this list that was there. All apologies for any mis-spellings. Once again, the U.S. Open will be held in beautiful Portland, Oregon on August 11, 12, and 13. We will have a center court inside The Bite - A Taste of Portland. This festival held at Tom McCall Waterfront Park in downtown Portland draws nearly 200,000 spectators over three days to sample some of Portland's best food and enjoy featured entertainment that includes bands, acts, and FOOTBAG! Additionally, we are scheduled to have the HUGE bleachers from '97 Worlds to encourage even more spectating! This tournament will be DOUBLES ONLY. We must provide high-quality entertainment inside the Bite from noon on Friday through Sunday. Thus, MIXED DOUBLES will be starting at noon on Friday, August 11. The doubles only format should give lots of players the opportunity to be on center court, and hopefully will enable us to finish the tournament with plenty of time to get up to Worlds. Vancouver, B.C. is only a five to six hour drive! Come out and warm up for Worlds in front of thousands of spectators!!! IMPORTANT: The Days Inn City Center is our host hotel. Reservations must be made by July 28, two weeks before the Open. It's walking distance to the site, with lots of amenities (see event listing for full info). (Deadline Aug. 7) Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" ; format="flowed" Sender: owner-announce@footbag.org Folks, We're down to the wire, and with a week left, I've finally finished the online payment system to accompany the online registration for Worlds! To register and/or pay now, go to: http://www.footbag.org/registration/register?tid=941418343 If you are planning to compete, the deadline for Worlds *payment* and registration is AUGUST 7th. Please go now to the Worlds registration system and complete your registration and pay your entry fees using a credit card right away. This will guarantee your registration. Anyone who does not pay either online or by mail *by AUGUST 7TH* will be charged a $10 (US) late registration penalty! If you have previously submitted an online registration for Worlds, and would like to now pay for your registration, simply return to the Worlds registration form online and re-submit (your previous choices will come right up as soon as you go there). This will also give you a chance to review your final registration choices. Then, the system will give you a chance to pay. Please go ahead and pay -- there's really no time left. The whole process will literally take less than 3 minutes. Then, you simply check in and sign the waiver at Worlds. If you don't have a credit card, you can select "pay later", but, since the deadline for payment is August 7th, you'll need to mail an international money order to the organizers *immediately*. (Money orders should be in US dollars.) If you're from Canada and want to mail in your payment via check in Canadian dollars, simply multiply the total by 1.44 to get the CDN payment due. The mailing address is on the bottom of the final screen if you choose the "pay later" option. Please don't wait another minute to finalize your registration or else you may incur a $10 (US) penalty at the time of check-in, or (worst case) you may not be able to compete. Thanks. Steve P.S. The registration payment system is very new and has many minor cosmetic problems. Please bear with me and please be careful not to stress the system. Be as careful as you can when filling out the forms and please do not complain to me about the lack of SSL. This is a very safe system, and you are protected in most countries from online credit card theft. It is simply too difficult to enable "secure" transactions for this event. This is the same system the WFA has been using to process orders online for years. Thanks for not writing me to argue this point. If you don't want to pay online, there's always the mail (select "pay later" for mailing address) or you can pay the $10 late fee at on-site registration/check-in. P.P.S. THANKS very much to the WFA for their help with online payment -- they are providing the clearinghouse for all online credit-card transactions for the new registration system on footbag.org. Without their help, we would not have this system for Worlds.
