Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" ; format="flowed" Sender: owner-announce@footbag.org Footbag players, friends, family, followers, and aficionados: In my recent message to this list about the 2001 World Footbag Championships, I promised that this year would be the best Worlds ever, and I added "for the *players*". That may have seemed cryptic at the time, but I'm now ready to announce some great news for the new millennium that will hopefully tie all my obscure comments together. :-) On behalf of the members of the Bay Area Footbag League, the board of directors of the World-Wide Footbag Foundation, the World Footbag Association, and the International Footbag Committee, I'm very pleased to announce the creation of the International Footbag Players' Association, and its inaugural event: The IFPA World Footbag Championships! The 2001 Worlds will take place in early-to-mid August in the San Francisco Bay Area. The exact dates are still to be finalized, so stay tuned, but the Bay Area Footbag League and the staff of the World-Wide Footbag Foundation, and many others, are committed to making the Worlds happen this summer in a big way in the San Francisco area. The staff for the 2001 Worlds have been busily working on securing sites and firming up the dates, and of course there are a lot of details to be worked out, so please be patient with us as we send more announcements over the next couple of months. And of course, as always, check the footbag.org website for updates. As I said in my previous e-mail, you can *plan* on a great World Championships to kick off the new millennium! Clear your calendars, pack up the kids, and get your pet-sitters lined up -- you're going to San Francisco in August! Look for more information soon about the IFPA, which will be the official players' association of the sport of footbag, combining the WFA's membership services, the International Footbag Committee (formerly IFAB), and the World-Wide Footbag Foundation's footbag.org online player community, all together with a formal players' association, where player members have the ability to elect representatives and participate together in the future development of the sport. IFPA will officially launch as part of the World Championships, which is a good six months away, so there are still a lot of details to be worked out to be sure. So this is a very early announcement just to let everyone know what's in the works. Thanks to everyone who has helped bring this together, including all the previous (and future) Worlds organizers, the wonderful John Stalberger who keeps us all inspired to keep pushing the sport forward, Bruce Guettich for all his support and for laying the foundation we all play on, the DC crew for their recent hard work in attempting to pull this event together, and most of all, the core 2001 Worlds Organizing Committee -- Julie Symons, Lisa McDaniel, Brent & Jody Welch, Vince Bradley, and david Butcher. The 2001 Worlds Committee can be reached via e-mail at worlds@footbag.org. If you have questions or comments regarding the IFPA, please direct them to me for now, until we are a little farther along. I look forward to a wonderful year for the sport of footbag, and I hope everyone can make it to the big event! Steve Goldberg President, World-Wide Footbag Foundation, Inc. I'm here to report the results of the 2001 edition of the Montreal Hivernal Tournament. We had 38 competitors, 23 participate in net and 18 in freestyle. The weekend started with and icestorm on friday. Chris Seibert had a hard time to make it by plane and his partner, Jason Langis, never made it due to flight cancellation. It's the first time, i think that someone miss the hivernal due to the weather. We also had the chance to have the visit from 3 promising newcomer from Winnipeg. Tim Melnyck, Marc (can't remember his last name) and Joel Dion who was sick for most of the tournament but did enter almost all the events, freestyle and net. The turnout was pretty good this year. More and more local players participate and that's a very good sign. Martin Cote -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Intermediate Singles Net 1. Tim Melnyck 2.
