We had approximately 90 competitors, with more open than intermediate players, almost even between net players and freestylers. Players came not only from the western states, but also from as far away as the DC area and Montreal (Canada). And, as usual, the Montreal contingent (one of whom now lives in the Bay Area) swept the net events. :-) [Note, Jan, that we don't deny them their title. :-)] Despite a slightly smaller field of net players than in previous years, there was spectacular net competition all throughout the weekend. Upsets were had, and in a couple of cases, players from the losers' brackets (in the double-elim format) managed to fight their ways back to win the final match and the tie-breaker. There was definitely some incredibly exciting net play this weekend. Freestyle, as usual, was insane. New players showed up out of nowhere already hitting 4-add tricks. Most of the best freestylers on the west coast showed up, shredding hard the whole weekend. The competition was phenomenal, garnering a pretty nice crowd for the finals on Monday. There's a lot more to report, but for the sake of brevity, I'll skip on to the results for the main events. There are unfortunately a few missing results -- I'll update those later as I get them on the website. Thanks to everyone who attended, whether you competed or not. Thanks go especially to the staff (listed below), as well as the booster club members who donated extra money in addition to their entry fee to help offset our costs this year. I sincerely appreciate everyone's help and understanding as we have had little funding over the last few years. ------- RESULTS: 16th Annual Western Regional Footbag Championships Concluded - May 26-28, 2001 Stanford University - Wilbur Field Palo Alto, California (USA) Most valuable staff member: Julie Symons Julie contributed not only tremendous amounts of time and energy to making this year's Western Regionals possible, but she also contributed cash to help with some of the expenses. This year, my job situation was so crazy that I really had no time to even begin the task of pulling everyone together to make the event happen. Julie stepped up to the plate and took over for me to coordinate the tournament this year. If it weren't for her, there simply would not have been an event. Thanks, Julie. It was worth it -- the event went very smoothly thanks to the help of all our great players and staff members. Tomorrow (Saturday, June 30th) Come join us in the Chicago area for an opportunity to demonstrate the sport of footbag to large crowds, three times in a single day... Summary: 2:00 to 4:00 pm in Lisle - Film for "Wild Chicago" Television Show, focus on NET 5:00 to 7:00 pm in Chicago - Chicago Fire Soccer Pre-Game Interactive Demonstrations "Fire Fest" (Net and Freestyle) Approx. 8:00 pm in Soldiers Field, Chicago - Half Time Demo at Chicago Fire Game, (Net and Freestyle) WTTW (PBS in Chicago) Wild Chicago Program - A half hour show that features several segments that are unique to Chicago. This show has been on the air over 15 years, and I have been passively approaching them over the years to do a footbag segment. We need as many people as possible, kickers and not, to make the "site" feel like a tournament. So please invite your friends out for a picnic. Doesn't everyone want to be on tv? This is your chance. We will be putting the film "in the can" for our footbag segment from 2:00pm to 4:00pm at a park in Lisle. DIRECTIONS TO "STEEPLE RUN" School in Lisle... Rt. 88 to Naper Blvd South, take Naper Blvd. South to Maple East (turn Left). Take Maple to first light (if you go to Yackley, you have gone too far). Turn Left at that first light and go to stop sign and turn right into parking lot. We are at a field adjacent to a grade school. On the map referenced here, http://www.lisleparkdistrict.org/lislemap.htm our site is just to the east of "Oak Hill So." just to the left of center on the map. For more information, call our hotline at: 773.237.9255. Chicago Fire Soccer Pre-Game Interactive "Fire Fest" We have been invited to interact with soccer fans before the game at the South Gate of Soldiers Field, promoting the sport, teaching children and adults to play "our" foot game, and promoting our upcoming events in Chicago and of course, our sponsors "footbag.org", Applebees and Revolution Footbags. From 5:00 to 7:00 pm Chicago Fire Soccer Half-time Demo We need 10 to 15 people to populate the field, but anyone of strong intermediate skill level or better is invited to join us on the field (same place where da Bears play). We will be featured on the JumboTron, we will have a net (held up by humans, not stakes) and plenty of freestyle area. There is a $9 fee to cover your ticket costs for the game (a reduced rate, but necessary to do this demo). We have additional tickets available (unlimited) at that reduced rate for your family and friends. We will all go out and have dinner at a nearby restaurant, TBA, after the event. Please come support us in promoting our sport to Chicagoans at large. Thanks in advance for your support! Midwest Footbag Association Scott and Valeria Davidson 773.237.9255
