There will be a lot of action in Montreal in 2002. Here are the first announcements I wish to make. All the following are Net tournaments or events. First of all we will have the Windchill tournament which will happen at the Cegep of Old Montreal April 6 and 7th. It's a great indoor site with 16 courts on wood floors. Best way to start the season. The second thing is the return of training camps. We will start the camps around June 27 with some workshops for kids. Then we'll have a local camp in Quebec city July 12th just before the Quebec tournament Which will happen on the 13th and 14th. Then we will have the International Nuts'n'Bolts Footbag net training camp that will take place on July 16th and 17th (this could be pushed one day later to accommodate some European players) which will be followed by the International Conference on the future of Footbag net. This will be the occasion to make a new statement and set some goals for the future of our sport. This will conclude with the 2002 Montreal International Footbag Championship. Friday the 19th is reserved for mixt doubles if teams show up. Singles and doubles will start on the 20th and everything will resume on Sunday the 21st for the semis and finals. This would be a perfect time to get in gear for World's. Trivia question: In the men's open net categories (singles and doubles) only 1 person won an event in Montreal since 1989 (including the Summer tournaments, World's and Windchills) that wasn't from Montreal, who is it? Hint: He's a very well known freestyler. Everybody start stretching these muscles 2002 will be very competitive! I couldn't believe it when we did a head count and found out that about 50+ players were in attendance... 50! Go East Coast footbag!!! I'm going to write more than I should below, because this is the most pumped I've been about any event that I've ever held. Just warning you! Highlights: We had women players! Lonn Irish always does a great job of getting Meg (aka Mrs. Riefer) out on the floor. The two of them played with the guys for hours. Lonn is really progressing and was putting together combos like butterfly > osis > mirage! Both of them add such a positive energy to any circle. Edwin Tichenor and Jake Milofsky were two relatively newer players that showed that they have GAME! Both of these players were hitting stepping and atomic moves and really look like up and coming players. I can't wait to see these two play over the next year or so -- keep an eye out for them. Newbies galore. Everyone kept commenting how cool it was to look around and *not* know anyone. I met at least 20 new players. Many of these players were attending their first event. And... quick reminder to those new players -- email me!!! We need to see your faces more often!! Peter was hitting all his usual crazy strings, plus he's added one hell of a pixie set. Pixie torque and pixie same side drifter mid run with ease -- then later in the same run, blurry torque etc. I'll never get over how he makes moves like mobius look soooo easy. Kenny? Kenny is Kenny. Double spinning, double dexing, atomic, quantum. Yep. He's good at footbag. Did I really need to tell you that? Still one of the best in the world.. no discussion necessary. Jonathan? I have vid of him hitting probably the deepest cleanest toe blur I've ever seen. I also saw him go for a whirling ripstein-- he didn't hit it, but I can picture it, and that's just nuts. He just constantly amazes me with his ability to figure this sport out and take it to different levels. Bevier? He can shred. his strings were long and he seems to really have no weaknesses.. His shuffle is excellent, he hits huge moves and unique combos, and looks so smooth while doing it all -- he definitely proved he's worthy of his recent BAP induction. Me? I rock. Yeah ok. Wake up Bob. Oh yeah. After about 4-5 hours of solid shredding, we were forced to move the event upstairs so that a teen (15 year olds) dance could take place in the gym we were using. The venue had purchased footbags from the WFA for a terrific deal (Thanks Bruce!!!) and passed them out to every teen in attendance after a short shred demo by Peter, Jonathan and Scott. The kids really seemed to be mesmerized by all the complex moves! What great exposure for the sport! We decided not to have a Shred 30 competition because we were all having too much fun to stop playing, and because Scott looked pretty tireless and fearless. We did however hold a Sick 3 competition. The results below are a little funky for two reasons: 1) Everyone could have hit bigger tricks if we'd played before our legs were fried. and 2) We really just scored subjectively rather than really sweating the details. It was FUN though. So here are our rough results: Sick 3 Results: 1st Place - Tie - Kenny Shults (blurry whirl > spinning whirl > scorpions tail) AND Peter Irish (blurry torque > pdx torque > pdx whirl) 2nd Place - Jonathan Schneider (torque ending on dragon > "spitfire" > dragon style pixie osis... sorry if I butchered these names) 3rd Place - Scott Bevier (pdx legbeater > stepping mirage > butterfly) 4th Place - Jake Milofsky (blur > butterfly > pdx symp mirage) 5th Place - Bob Green (smear > ducking clipper > osis) 6th Place - Edwin Tichenor (zero score, but oooooh soooo cloooose to blizzard > legbeater > ps whirl!) OK, that's about it. Take care and talk soon. This low-key festival will include top players from the Bay Area as well as locals from Phoenix and all of you who are interested in getting away from the ice and snow to get a little exercise and kicking in with different players. There will be no entry fee for the festival and it is a great time to bring the kids or a significant other because you don't have to dedicate every second of your days here to thinking of when the next match will be played. At the same time, you can play as much and as little as your hearts desire. There will be no having to get up at 6 am to make up your match you missed from the previous day. There will be no having to get to sleep early. There will just be kicking, kicking, BBQ, and more kicking. Please come and join us this year in Phoenix to shake off the dust and rust from your game that has built up since Worlds. And don't forget to bring your sunscreen! Hope to see you here! It is time to solicit nominations for the annual induction of new members to the Footbag Hall of Fame. This is your chance to place your nominations for those you consider to be the leaders in the growth and development of footbag. You may nominate 1 person only 1 time, though you are welcome to solicit others to second or support a nomination. Your nomination should include at least a brief testimonial on your nominee. This process is open to everyone until the deadline of March 31, 2002. Please nominate by sending e-mail directly to me. If you want your nomination to be public, feel free to cc it to footbag@footbag.org, but realize that is a large mailing list. [Steve's admonition.] The top 5 in multiple nominations received by March 31, 2002 will be added to the final ballot voted upon by the current members in May. All key testimonials will be supplied with a biography for each final ballot nominee to the final ballot voters. Inductees will be announced during the first week of June, 2002. The annual induction celebration is planned as part of Worlds 2002. These top 5 (including ties), will be added to 5 (including ties) carried over from last year's final ballot. These 2002 automatic nominees are: Eric Cole, Sam Conlon, Derrick Fogle, Sabra Jean Hall, Maxell Smith Jr., and Tim Vozar! (You may supply testimonials for these nominees too!) The criteria are simple: Anyone who has made significant contributions to the growth of the game and sport of footbag, worldwide, since its inception in 1972. Leadership qualities include: game/sport innovation and inspiration via individual and team play, club development, teaching/training/demonstration (such as tour team involvement), inventions related directly to the sport/game (such as footbag designs), promotion and tournament development, and development of communication tools/assets (such as websites for Footbag). Again, who has contributed leadership, significantly, to the sport's growth, worldwide. You are invited to review the current membership via a linked website to this website: http://www.mrfootbag.com. Then click on Footbag Hall of Fame. Currently there are 38 of your peers proudly honored and inducted. These are the leaders honored to date. It's up to you to decide who has lead and inspired you, and that should be considered for induction this year more than ever. Please note that unlike other sports, nomination and induction is not limited to retirement from active, open division play. Footbag is a young sport to date, and anyone that can still play to their highest level is encouraged to do so! Keep on kicking a footbag, and pass it on! Official dates are yet to be determined but are expected to be late July or early August. The key directors of the event will be Julie Symons, Lisa McDaniel, and Eric Wulff. The same people that did such a terrific job at last years' Worlds. More detailed information will be announced in the near future. After the successful conclusion of the 2001 World Footbag Championships the International Footbag Committee had its annual meeting. A large part of the business covered was related to the creation of the International Footbag Players' Association and how it would impact the future of the IFC. The direct result was for the IFC to merge with the IFPA and be directed by the mandate of the IFPA once its Board of Directors were elected. The IFC is comprised of several committees. One of those is the Worlds Oversight Committee which many people may, or may not, be aware of. The WOC is a 7 member committee authorized by the IFC to solicit, review, and select bids to host the World Footbag Championships from year to year. The members of this committee are Steve Goldberg, Bruce Guettich, John Stalberger, Chard Cook, Vince Bradley, Jody Welch, and Jan Zimmermann. The role for this committee is to see that the World Championships keeps a high standard of professionalism as it moves from city to city and to establish and maintain a selection process for interested candidates to host the event. This process includes entering a bid to host by completing an application outlining the abilities of the organizer and other pertinent event details. The applications are reviewed by the WOC and decided upon by a majority vote of its committee members. We would like to take this opportunity to invite interested organizers to enter a bid for 2003 and 2004. In the near future an online application form will be available, but for now, interested candidates can obtain an application from any of the WOC members. Contact information is below. Our goal is to announce the host and location of the 2003 Worlds at this years' Worlds. The WOC would like to thank the members of the Bay Area Footbag League for their bid and congratulate them on their selection to host the 2002 World Footbag Championships. We look forward to returning to San Francisco and wish them all the best in their organizing efforts.
