We will be conducting a Pro/Am event in the morning which will partner up novices and experienced players to share the wealth of talent. The emphasis on the Pro/Am will be on fun and playing with many different partners. Lunch included in the modest registration of $25 will be served following the Pro/Am and the afternoon will feature the Pro's going at it as well and the intermediates. Mixed doubles will close the action for this one day event then it's off to celebrate. San Luis Obispo is located equidistance between Los Angeles and San Fransisco making it an easy road trip for those on the west coast and the airport services flights from Los Angeles and San Fransisco as well. Mitchell Park is located in the heart of downtown San Luis Obispo and is walking distance to shops and seven miles from the beach. The climate is pristine and the surrounding hills and college town energy make this a must attend event. All I want to do is have some fun, I've got a feelin' I'm not the only one... http://www.footbag.org/events/show/1015303046 Scott Cleere From owner-announce@list.footbag.org Mon Jun 3 22:50:12 2002 Received: (from majordom@localhost) by llic.net (8.9.3/8.9.3/Debian 8.9.3-21) id WAA22788 for announce-outgoing@list.footbag.org; Mon, 3 Jun 2002 22:50:12 -0700 Received: from I (dhcp212.llic.net [209.125.90.212]) by llic.net (8.9.3/8.9.3/Debian 8.9.3-21) with ESMTP id WAA22785 for ; Mon, 3 Jun 2002 22:50:11 -0700 Mime-Version: 1.0 X-Sender: brat@209.125.90.2 Message-Id: Date: Mon, 3 Jun 2002 22:50:04 -0700 To: announce@footbag.org From: Steve Goldberg Subject: [announce] RESULTS: 17th Annual Western Regional Footbag Championships Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" ; format="flowed" Sender: owner-announce@list.footbag.org The 17th annual Western Regional Footbag Championships concluded this past Memorial Day at Stanford University in Palo Alto, California. This marked the 10th and final year of the event at Stanford University. I'd like to take this opportunity to thank all of those people who've helped make Western Regionals a success, especially Chris Ott who created the event at Sonoma State University, as well as the Welches (Brent and Jody) and Julie Symons for their undying dedication to the event -- year after year -- since we brought it to the Bay Area. I am bowing out as organizer for this event -- 10 years is a long time, and it's time to move on to other projects. If anyone lives on the west coast and is interested in bringing this event to your town, contact me and we can see what we can do. Of course, my colleagues in the Bay Area Footbag League have "dibs" on the event, but it's worth seeing who else may be interested. Anyway, the event went off without a hitch -- the weather held up despite rumors of a big storm (in California, "storm" has an entirely different meaning than in most other places; think "cloudy", and you'll get the idea). Anyway, the weather was pretty much perfect all three days -- a little fog in the morning on Monday, but otherwise blue skies and only a little wind here and there. There was four-square all day every day, even after the event had officially ended two of the three days. And of course, there were the "standard" nighttime jams at Casa de Steve, in my footbag room, mostly for the video cameras. I expect some of the bloodier scenes could make their way onto MTV's "Jackass". :-) Ryan Mulroney and Matt Rizzetta traded off DJ'ing the event this year, with assistance from other folks as well (including Tu Vu, Toby Robinson, Stan Sagalovskiy, and Ariel Jakobovits from the Stanford club). Net competition was much lighter than in years past (the lightest it's ever been in our 10 years of running it at Stanford), but we did have some phenomenal competition nonetheless. Both Open and Women's net were very fun to watch, especially the long and hard-fought battles for finals in each event. And Mixed Doubles was intense (david just *wouldn't* give up). Freestyle was a little lighter than normal, too, mostly because a lot of you incredible players refuse to show up before noon, or don't like to compete, or both. :-) Either way, the freestyle was as unbelievable as ever, with world class routines by top players in the sport. We tried out a new judging system, which in my opinion worked very well and which we will be proposing to IFC (now part of IFPA). The new system makes it much easier to implement, but is still true to the underlying IFC rules. So, all in all, it was a great event. Most people had a good time, though I'm still cleaning the blood off my footbag room carpet, though the staples should be coming out of Lon's head any day now. :-) Anyway, 'nuff said. Thanks again to everyone who came out, and especially to those who helped out (whether officially or not). I'd hoped to end my 10 year career of organizing this event on a bigger note, but it was a great event all the same. And I'm glad to have been a part of giving footbag players an opportunity to meet, play, learn, and enjoy each other's company for the last decade. For those of you who are interested, the IFPA has been working on a project to collect "demographics" for footbag for a while now -- using our website users as the population to measure. While users of footbag.org clearly skew towards younger high-school-aged kids surfing the web, we think this is a valuable tool for helping us understand the growing population of footbag players and aficionados. This information could be useful in soliciting sponsorships, media coverage, demonstration opportunities, and other related projects for the greater footbag community. Please feel free to use this information if you need, and be sure to credit the source as being the "International Footbag Players' Association, Inc." and date the results from June, 2002. If you're interested in helping with the demographics project and have a background in surveys, user studies, marketing, or demographics, please let me or Chris Ott (marketing director) know. Thanks. Find the most recent survey results below. There's actually more to it than I've listed below -- this is what I consider to be the relevant output from the last survey period. I will update this information and put it up on a page on footbag.org at some point soon. Conducted over a conference call, the first meeting was a productive one. All 11 members attended, as we worked to further define our individual roles and direction for the coming year. We also addressed some key issues surrounding our long term goals as an organization. It is a crucial time for the board members to lay down ground rules and responsibilities for each director to follow. These are elected and appointed positions, so as the first of many to come in the following years, we bear the load of defining exactly what each position should entail and exactly where the responsibilities lie. I am happy to say that we are making excellent progress. Specifically, we voted unanimously to make Chard Cook the Sanctioning Director and worked out some important issues regarding financing. We have all agreed that at this early time it would be in our best interest to incur the recognition of the American Amateur Sports Association on our path to gaining International Olympic Committee "Official Sport" status. In addition to his ongoing work for the general footbag-curious public and his free membership base, Steve Goldberg is about to release to the IFPA board a set of tools for online collaboration which will no doubt make our jobs easier. I don't think Steve's contribution to this organization can be understated, so I will take this opportunity to thank Steve on behalf of footbaggers everywhere. If you aren't a member already, please sign up to become a member of the IFPA. Your board of directors is made up a true cross-section of the footbag community, which represents the sport better than ever. We need everyone who plays, seriously or not, to join up and support the IFPA so that we can begin to bring about the wider, global recognition that footbag is an established, legitimate activity. Please also note that now anyone, member or not, can make tax deductible donations not only to the IFPA, but to the World Footbag Championships directly. So, that's your IFPA update! I will endeavor to keep you updated on significant board decisions as they happen. (women's as warranted) *Late registration from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.. * Players may enter Masters if they are also in World's, but must choose in the case of *any* schedule conflict. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Updates to the Footbag Net Format This year's footbag net competition will feature a new and improved format and schedule, as well as three divisions in addition to women's. The new divisions are 1) Open 2) Advanced, and 3) Intermediate. This realignment will enable us to run a tighter schedule, so you will know when your matches are, and will benefit you, the players, by offering you more matches against other players at or near your level. All divisions will have a showcased final and awards through 3rd place. You may choose your own division. General division guidelines: *Open division is for the top players. If you frequently place near the top at your regional events, or have finished in the top half of Open at a recent WorldÌs, this could be your division. *Advanced division is for players who generally compete in Open, but who tend not to advance out of the pool, or don't finish in the top half. Advanced players may have won Intermediate before, or advanced beyond the Intermediate level. *Intermediate division is for new players or more casual players who have not won or placed highly in a previous intermediate division. All divisions of net competition will use a "pool to bracket" format. Players will be seeded into pools, and pool play results will be used to advance and seed them into a single elimination bracket. You may choose your own division based on your own judgement and history. However, the Open *bracket* will be kept to a limited number of entrants. This means that some players who enter in the Open division will be resorted into the Advanced bracket after pool play. So, there are two ways to get into the Advanced bracket: (1) Enter Advanced when you register. The Advanced pools will feed you into the Advanced bracket, (2) Enter Open when you register, and if you don't advance to the Open bracket after the Open pool, you will be fed into the Advanced bracket. Intermediate entrants will play pools into an Intermediate bracket. Women may enter ANY division, Intermediate, Advanced, or Open. Women who wish to compete only with other women should enter Womens Open or Womens Intermediate. Both these divisions will be formatted with pool play into a single elimination bracket. Players can enter in only one division per event. Any division may be merged with another without prior notice, at the tournament directors discretion, if it does not get a large enough draw. From: Lisa McDaniel To: Message-ID: Mime-version: 1.0 Content-type: text/plain; charset="US-ASCII" Content-transfer-encoding: 7bit Sender: owner-announce@list.footbag.org Hey Worlds travelers! Need roommates for the Worlds hotel? If so, I am setting up a roommate exchange to help you. Rooms cost US $99 plus tax per room with up to 4 people per room, so sharing is a great way to cut this already great price down to a manageable cost. The hotel is located smack dab in the middle of Fisherman's Wharf in San Francisco -- a great central location, at a very good price. To get my help with finding roommates, please first pre-register online as soon as possible, and select the option that says you need a roommate. Then, after you've done that, please e-mail me with your info to follow up. Include all contact info, address, and phone. Also, all other info: if you already have a room reserved and just need 1 or more roommates, or if you need a room but don't want to book it until you have enough roommates. I will collect names for about 10 days and then publish the list to all who sign on. You guys can then work out your own situations. Please sign on ASAP.
