The month of August is upon us... and so is all the footbag fun! I would like to ask at this time if you know for sure that your coming or you think there's a good chance you're coming send me a quick email with just the subject heading VanOpen-yes (or maybe) as the case may be. Getting an approximate number of players/visitors is invaluable in many cases for other activities and sponsorship, so if you could let me know asap...it would be greatly appreciated. Plus it enables us to be more efficient and organized so you can have more fun! Just a few quick FAQ and answers: Are you taking pre-registration? - no pre-registration, see schedule on www.footbag.org site, but again if you think there's a good chance your coming please let us know asap Can I help by volunteering? - yes, yes, and YES! volunteers get perks too ask me and I'll tell you more :-> Looking for a place to stay? - some KFA'ers have available space (ask me now) What about a hotel? - we do have a hotel that would like to sponsor us with some inexpensive rooms but I need some hard numbers, so let me know asap! I don't have a partner. - not to worry..find one when you get here, that's half the fun(so to speak) we'll help :-) What's the weather like? - usually it's nice and hot 25+ but I suggest you bring a long sleeved 'something', track pants and a light jacket just in case... If I've left anything out or haven't answered your questions please go to the www.footbag.org site first and if you don't find the answer there I'd be happy to answer any email or (phone calls if necessary). That's all for now kids! Hope you're having a terrific summer and hope to see you in Vancouver in a few short weeks :-) with much love ~The Queen~ Leanne p.s. if someone at worlds could pass this on from those of us left behind...WIN JAKE WIN!!!! thanks ;-> and if you know how he's ranking so far send us an email... Unfortunately I could not be therebut from what I heard everybody had a great time. I must specifically mention how nice it was to have this tournament be a "discriminating" national tournament. We had the oportunity to fairly decide on the best players from Switzerland, the Swiss scene had a big come together and a lot of new contacts were made, and (most important of all) a lot of new players showed up and competed who were too scared to even come watch at the big international contest "FootJam" in June. We had 9 (!) girls performing on stage, some of them only into footbag for the last couple of months. To all local and national organizations of smaller countries: It is absolutely worth your time to host "restricted" tournaments without the "big names", you'll be surprised how many mice crawl out their holes if they don't feel pressured. Forecast for rain we all had our doubts and were all trying to think of the best place we could find to kick inside somewhere. Fortunately the gods smiled upon us and we all got the weather we deserved. The event started at 11am with a casual warm-up kick and then we started with the program. We officially accepted the Malaysian High Commissioner who kicked off the Sepak Takraw demonstration. Then it was time to dig into some Malaysian Cuisine supplied by the local High Commission. There were heaps of footbag / Hacky circles, people casually playing Takraw and DJ Fidjit creating an awesome atmosphere for everyone to enjoy. MC Jedi kept it all together, announcing the different comps, keeping spirits high and making us all laugh (generally at my expense). Red Bull also came to the party and gave away a bunch of drinks, cheers guys. Now the serious stuff...the competitions! Malaysia narrowly won the Sepak Takraw test match against NZ 18-16 and got T-shirts from Seapa for their efforts. The novelty hack comp was a huge success with people kicking around all sorts of stuff to win prizes (the idea was to get a hack with 4 people with the weirdest things). The Beginners Freestyle was one by Sam ????? who blew the rest of the competition away with few drops and a smooth style. Next was the Advanced freestyle which was taken out by Hanz Freller, Chch. and he scored a wicked hammock from Seapa for his efforts. Huge props go to Jock and Andy from Recreation Wellington for the organisation, Raja for getting the Malaysian side organised, Pete (DJ Fidjit) and MC Jedi for keeping us going and extra huge props to Seapa for giving us all those awesome prizes. The entire day went exactly as planned with wicked shred and an opportunity to catch up with all the kickers everyone hadn't seen for a while. We also got the extra bonus of getting on the National News . Thanks to everyone who showed up and made it worthwhile. See you at NZ Nationals. Please remember that I just administer the site. It's not my personal site. And some day once I finish rewriting it all, other people will have an easier time administering it too. But so far, aside from a very small handful of people, almost nobody actually manages to *contribute* anything to footbag.org. I mostly mean in terms of content -- i.e., video, photos, instructional material, other information. I'm not talking about volunteering time to administer it (thanks to those of you who have and continue to help with that). Sure, people always respond to this type of e-mail saying in theory they'd like to contribute. But in the end, very very few people actually do. Most of the time, the response is, "sure, just tell me what to do". That won't work. More of you need to just *know* what you need to do, and *do it*. In terms of video and photos, I can safely say that the level of contribution of content from the community to the central resource has in the last 2 years has been *miniscule*. Everyone seems to think *I* will update the site. They think it's *my* site. And *I* have time to go create great content and add it to the site. Or they assume I will continually come up with great new ideas and implement them for everyone. Well, folks, that ain't the way it works. For example, I have 1000 hours of video footage but I will *never* find the time myself to scan it all into the computer, convert it to a good resolution to be displayed, add the copyright titles, write it out, make a jpg preview image, and upload it to my site. I just won't ever finish that project by myself. OTHER PEOPLE have to do this. I will do the last bit of actually creating the web pages from the video, but *other people* (that's you) have to start contributing the bulk of the work. It just won't work if you all expect *me* to do it forever. I'm so burned out on it I could just turn the whole server off today and be really happy for a few months of peace and quiet. Don't be surprised if that actually happens at some point, even if just for a day. Instead of offers to add content to the site, though, what I get are the following two most-common requests (ignoring the silly ones like, "how do I post to the list" and "where can I find a hack in my town"): #1 most common request: When will you have more video in your gallery? I've been waiting to see Worlds 2002 videos. What gives? Are you people lazy over there at footbag.org, or what? (Like we have throngs of motivated employees working for us or something. #2 most common request: will you link to my for-profit site so I can get traffic from the great information resource you've created and sap the last few $ out of the market of footbag aficionados, further dwindling the already miniscule resources put towards said center of footbag information on the internet? I'm tired of it. I want you guys and gals to RISE TO THE OCCASION and contribute to *your* footbag site. Not for your own profit. Not because you want free disk storage. But because you *care* and you want to further the goals we all share. I'm not saying there's anything wrong with all of your private ventures. But in the end, the community is starting to come apart at the seams. At best, our sense of collaboration is waning. You have all had the opportunity for years to contribute to footbag.org, but almost nobody has taken it. It's to the point where the hours (and I really mean hours) I spend every *DAY* answering e-mails, helping users get their passwords, removing offending users, blocking spammers and hackers, making tape backups, updating the news section, moderating announcements, updating mailing lists, and all the rest -- leave me no time to do anything else, and leave me with a sense of utter inanity -- why do I keep doing this? What's the motivating force? Is this a sign of impending doom for the IFPA, which will simply not work without volunteers to take initiative and start doing things? Yes, we definitely have some momentum with IFPA. But do you know how many people actually attended the annual IFPA membership meeting at Worlds? Around *10* people. That's just depressing, when you think of it. What is up with you folks? This message is meant to do one thing -- light a fire. I ask you all to light that fire inside yourselves. Volunteer. Contribute. Build. Create. Work. Work together. Make things happen. Take advantage of the infrastructure we've built. Don't just sit there waiting for someone else to do it. This sport's gonna die unless *every* member of the community is working together towards a greater goal. We all share that goal at *some* level. We're not a community in disarray. We're just a community that's sitting on its haunches. I challenge everyone reading this to figure out *one* way in which they can contribute to the sport -- sure by being a world class athlete, but more importantly by participating in the organizational side of the sport, or by organizing an event, or by teaching (especially if you're one of the top players -- so few of you *ever* teach), or by contributing cool content to footbag.org. LET'S GET UP AND FLEX OUR COLLECTIVE MUSCLES. I repeat: it's time to get up.
