We are heavily busy organizing this year's German Footbag Open. For all those who are (not *yet*) planning to come, here is an update on current changes or good news. 1) propaganda - We are spreading the not-so-small amount of 10,000 flyers throughout Berlin. As of now, we are more than half way through getting rid of them! For example, past Saturday we played footbag and distributed about one thousand flyers at Europe's (and probaly the world's) biggest hemp legalization demonstration, the Hanfparade. MTV Germany will announce the event with an own trailer from the 10th on, several of the nation's top TV stations as well as some local radio stations will report about the event either in advance, live or afterwards. 2) accommodation - We have found a close and nice hostel. The A&O Backpackers Hostel (www.aobackpackers.de) is only one city railway station from the event's site and has some of the best rates in town: Try to find a bed to sleep in and pay as little as 12 Euro per night! This offer almost is not to be beaten, especially as the hostel really has big, clean and nice rooms. 3) travel info - If you are in need of information how to get to Berlin (if you can't read the signs on the Autobahn), check out the tournament's website at www.fcfootstar.de. To get you safely to the site, you'll find a link to a good online map service that will show you all you need. 4) prizes - We are not holding a prize money event, but our prizes are worth some good money: Shoes from Puma, sunglasses from DragonOptical and bags from Bagjack. Of course, medals and cups will be awarded to the first three places of every discipline. 5) players's package - Get ready for the most stuffed player's package ever! It will contain goods from Puma (e.g. shorts), the tourney's t-shirt and some more nice gimmicks - all this for the small entry fee of 10 Euro for Open players (5 Euro for Intermediate, respectively). There is a lot more to say, I'll give some keywords: Massage available on site, price reduction on drinks & food, prominent DJs and sound systems, site right at a river, and and and. If this wasn't incitement enough, one name left to say: Vasek Klouda. And now - it's your turn! Go to http://www.fcfootstar.de, get yourself the information you need, register directly on-line and get prepared for Germany's biggest footbag event of the year. Matthias L. There were 51 competitors that played through the Labor Day weekend in various weather conditions. Saturday was over cast and cloudy -- a fine day for net. Monday was partly sunny and when that sun did come out, it was baking. Sunday's schedule was rain delayed by an hour. Thus the net courts were slippery and proved to be a challenge. But what the heck, we had the best. Thus they sucked it up and battled mightily. Emmanuel "Manu" Bouchard took two games against Yves "Evil" Archambault on Monday in finals to place first in Pro Singles Net. Manu and Evil then took two games from James "Legend" Harley and Eric "Ironman" Wulff to win Pro Doubles Net. The skills contests had quite the pre-contest verbal and mental psyche battles. I overheard several references to being a girlie man, not an iron or super man, etc. The superman gladiators on Saturday, Kenny Shults and Vince Bradley gave the competitors a rough time. Emmanuel Bouchard and Yves Archambault did the gladiator honors for the final round. A few competitors timed out in the preliminary and final rounds due to the viciousness of the gladiators. Take note of Emmanuel next year. He seems to smile way too much as a gladiator! Eric Wulff, Ryan "Eldopo" Mulroney and Greg "GF Smoothie" Nelson vied for 2002 title, but it was Top Dog, Jamie Lepley, taking the top spot with his precision golf shots that gave him a 2-second edge over Eric. Eric, Ryan, Ariel Santesteban, battled in the final round of Iron Man but Greg Nelson rose to the occasion with a summer classic record time of 103.90. Eric exerted some physical contact with Ryan during their round. It took Ryan by surprise, but he is a fast learner. Hum, next year could prove to be interesting. Freestyle shred was awesome as usual with Sunil Jani, Peter "The Executioner" Irish, Sebastien "Hurricane" Duchesnes, and John "Outsider" Schneider were unable to hold off Ryan from taking the title. Finalists Emmanuel Bouchard, Jamie Lepley, and Matt Quint placed behind the 2002 Service Poaching Champion, Chris Seibert. The celebrity judges (Lon Irish, Kenny Shults, Brenda Solonoski, Jack Lentz & Yves Archambault) proved to be very selective in giving out top scores and somewhat rebellious in scores they (he-Kenny) chose. Freestyle preliminaries were neck and neck until Peter Irish performed a no drop routine to take the top seed to the finals. In the final round, Carol "She-Blade" Wedemeyer had the only 1-drop routine with Ryan having 2 and Peter and Sunil having 3 drops. The look on the crowds' faces when Carol performs is priceless. They look so blown away, but thrilled to watch a woman with such skills. Ryan wowed the crowd with his world's finals routine that earned him the 2002 Summer Classic Freestyle Champion title. I felt like I just drank 2 expressos listening to his music and was out of breath and totally exhilarated watching the seemingly never ending, racing, mind blowing two minute add packed routine. Four Square was alive and well. Vince Bradley seemed to be the "unofficial" most improved player and just happened to win the last game at the end of the tournament. Tables with prize merchandise for first through fourth places were set up so that the winners had their choice of prize(s). Pros split $2000 in 8 events and some picked up merchandise prizes also. Captain Smiley's Magical Tour Company manned a stand and did demos of their product throughout the weekend. The 2002 staff consisted of Brenda, Joe & Julian "Jules" Solonoski, "Hacky Sack" Jack Lentz, Vince Bradly, Jamie Lepley, Garth "Head of Security" Smith, Chris Seibert and "Big" Dave Garber. We also received valuable help from Kenny Shults, Steve Goldberg, Jeremy Walters, Bill Hamilton, Eric Wulff and Ted "Fred Tich" Fritsch. Many thanks to all of them and to anyone I might have missed. This event could not run as smoothly without their help. We have a BIG THANKS to all our sponsors. Please support these companies and/or thank these people for they have supported you and your sport. Funtastik (prizes, tournament T, etc), Jack Lentz, World Footbag Association (footbag in players pack), SkiRoundtop, Four Square, Revolution Footbags, Kick Bag Footbags, Captain Smiley's Magical Tour Company, ES, Etnies, Emerica, Forum, Circa and TJF Inc. (Ted Fritsch). Last but not least, we would like to thank all the competitors for coming and making the Summer Classic such a special, successful and fun event. If you're not interested in general administrivia relating to the footbag.org e-mail lists, please discard this message. I seem to always get complaints when I send out general information -- people don't want *too* much e-mail and they think this one message I send periodically is an annoyance. Well, sorry. But don't remove yourself from the list just because of these reasonably infrequent e-mails. That said, for those of you who care, here's an update on administrative issues. (1) People are not listening to my desperate pleas to stop changing e-mail addresses weekly. Please note that at the bottom of this e-mail just for everyone's edification is a list of people and e-mail addresses that have stopped working just within this last MONTH. It's incredible to me. And if you notice, almost all of them are hotmail folks. There are a few that are left over from before, so not *every* one of the addresses listed is from last month, but most of them are. This is what I have to deal with every day. I really wish folks would unsubscribe and resubscribe using the automated system whenever they change e-mails, or, better yet, change their list subscriptions to use their footbag.org aliases, and just keep *those* addresses up to date using the profile management system (http://www.footbag.org/members/editprofile). (2) I got a lot of replies to my previous message asking for help. About 50% of them were of the form, "tell me what to do and I'll do it", but the rest of you actually offered real help. Thanks to those of you who responded. But, honestly, that wasn't the objective. I don't want people to just help me 'cause I ask. I want people to become sensitized to the amount of work we are duplicating because everyone's off doing their own thing instead of working together. So, having said that, I want to wait for it to sink in. Don't feel you need to reply or volunteer, just listen. :-) I appreciate that a lot of folks wrote me asking how they could help or offering specific ideas. But again, I'm in no position right now to actually work with everyone, so let's take it slow. (3) Footbag.org costs IFPA $75 per month, hard costs, not to mention random other costs, and of course not counting everyone's (not just my) donated time. And of course IFPA underwrites the World Footbag Championships which, this year at least, were a financial drain on our already-empty coffers. That said, before IFPA can do anything *real*, we'll need to be able to minimally cover our basic operating costs. This is a plea for people to (a) join IFPA if they haven't yet, so we can minimally keep footbag.org running, and (b) consider DONATING to IFPA (see http://www.footbag.org/ifpa for more information). We are a U.S. charitable non-profit corporation, so if you donate to IFPA you can list it as a deduction if you itemize. This means the U.S. government effectively donates 1/3 of your donation since you don't owe that portion of your income taxes. So, get the government to give us money by giving us money. :-) That's it for this round. If you see your name or someone else's name you know on this list below -- PLEASE don't e-mail *me* about it to update me on your or their e-mail. Instead, *you* do the work (please!). Either remove yourself from the mailing lists under your old address, or talk to anyone you know listed below and ask *them* to do the same. All the instructions are on the website (in the obvious place). I don't want a single e-mail from any of you telling me "oh so-and-so changed e-mails, here's his/her new address" or "oh you can take that address off". It's not my job. It's your (or their) responsibility. Take it. :-) Thanks. Steve 550 Frank Gutowski ... User unknown 550 Dustin Fournier ... User unknown 550 Darlene Perez ... User unknown 550 "Joni Kallio" ... Such was the case last Memorial Day weekend with the Western Regionals. Footbag promoter extrodinaire Steve Goldberg has decided to give the the long-running and successful tournament a rest. While there is sure to be at least one major tournament in the San Francisco Bay Area next year, it is certain that it will not happen on the traditional "first weekend" of summer. With that in mind, footbag players that like to travel during Memorial Day weekend listen up!! The Chicago Inner Circle, in conjunction with the Illinois Footbag League, is excited to announce the first annual Windy City Open Footbag Championships, to be run in Chicago on May 24-26, 2003. So plan ahead for next year's season, and instead of buying tickets to fly 'west' on Memorial Day, buy tickets to fly to the 'Mid'-west. The Windy City Open will take place entirely within the city limits of Chicago, and will feature competiton for cash prizes in Open singles and doubles net, freestyle, and possibly other freestyle-related events like the Sick 3, 30-second shred, etc. The same crew that brought you the awesome sites for the 1999 World Footbag Championships are working on solidifying site details as we speak, so keep your eyes on the 'upcoming events' page on footbag.org for all the recent details and developments. We realize that it is still a long time from now, but we wanted to get the word out as soon as possible because we want to run the best tournament this city's ever seen. Not only have we recieved verbal confirmation of many of the top net players that they will attend, but it has been rumored that Kenny Shults himself may actually be strapping on the net shoes once again beginning with this tournament. Now, we don't know if the rumors are true, but we don't intend to hear about it second-hand, and we don't advise that you do either. We look forward to welcoming everyone back to the Windy City once again! The French scene was off course in full effect, backed by some of the Swiss best players, plus the Anne from Cologne, Germany. Instead of a regular "routine" contest, we had a "one-on-one" battle, using the following format: one player shreds until he drops, then the other one goes, and on and on, until each one reaches 7 drops. The other players registered vote afterwards to decide who won the battle. We had DJs who switched the music with each drop. That worked very well. Was it because of this format,or because it was a small event, but all players agreed this format was great, more fun and relaxed than routines. Aside from footbag, we had a great time, the festival was awesome, and everybody within the footbag crew got a VIP pass to get free food & drinks and concert tickets : not much to complain about ! Pictures of the event by Samuel at: http://www.maedchenwoche-solothurn.ch/2002_woodstower/index.htm Thanx, Sami ! Weíll come back next year, no doubt.
