A quick reminder about the U.S. Open Footbag Freestyle Championships... Shred for fun on Friday, the competition is on Saturday only, and shred for fun on Sunday. The hotel deadline has passed, but they are still taking reservations anyway... (Make your rservations now. I just reserved my room on Dec. 7th) Host Hotel: Hyatt Regency (Has a pool and is adjacent to the site via indoor walkways) Call 1-312-567-1234 and ask for "Reservations"... Tell them you are with the: "Holiday Sports Festival Group" Cut off date for reservations is December 6th. (EXTENDED til ???) Rooms are available for the nights of Dec 25th - 30th (but our event is Dec 27-29, and no competition is happening on Friday the 27th or Sunday the 29th,so those days are optional for competitors) Rates have gone up a little bit over last year (but it's still super cheap), and be careful to tell them there will only be 2 people in the room, even if you will have 4 or more (but don't tell 'em I told you that) $75 - 2 person $95 - includes continental breakfast in restaurant (for 2) OR $95 - 4 person $115 - includes contental breakfast in restaurant (for 4) I have a correction on the parking situation. The lot across from the Hyatt is $6 (not free), but you can leave it overnight for the sports festival no problem (better than the $25 valet parking at the Hyatt itself). The free parking is the lot adjacent to the McCormick Place entrance which is the same lot that was $5 last year. Also, we have filmed a segment that will air twice a day on Chicago Public Cable stations, to promote this event, so good exposure for the sport, if notheing else. The Schedule stands as follows: OFFICIAL SCHEDULE: Friday 12:00 Noon to 4:00 p.m. - Pre-registration & Shred All Day! To celebrate 'the Summer of Shred', the Auckland Freestyle Footbag Club is proud to present The Big Delay Out! This will be an epic jam session, to *live* music by Janes Addiction, Underworld, Foo Fighters and more ! Get your ticket to the Big Day Out ($95+bf) and join us for a memorable pre-Nationals shred! w00t! w00t! (see ). [Contact: Adrian Dick ] Just over a month later the Seapa NZ Freestyle Footbag Championships is coming to Wellington in conjunction with the Fringe Festival (a huge festival of various artistic talents including plays, buskers, bodypainters...everything). This is a 3 day event 21-23rd February with heaps of freestyle jam as well as the competitive side of things. The Fringe has lent a hand and we are shouting Ryan Mulroney the trip over, we are also expecting Lynton Stephens (Aussie Planet X-games champ) and NZ's own Adrian Dick as well as shredders from all over New Zealand. (See or for more). [Contact: Floyd Morgan ] This will be a huge NZ summer with heaps of sick stylers and I seriously encourage you to make the trip. Our currency is half price for all you US kickers, so you won't blow your budget, also there are plenty of awesome destinations between events if you have that time to spare to see NZ. If you think you are an IFPA member and you did not get this e-mail, please reply to me immediately so we can make sure you are able to vote! For the rest of you, this is just FYI: It's that time of year -- IFPA is having its annual elections and, all current members get to vote! (http://www.footbag.org/ifpa/vote/6) According to the IFPA By-Laws (which you can read online at http://www.footbag.org/ifpa), two of the elected positions on the IFPA Board of Directors are up for election for the 2003 operating year: Rules Director (david Butcher, incumbent, not seeking re-election) - Vince Bradley - abstain Education Director - Scott Davidson, incumbent - abstain To vote, current members can simply click this link (or copy/paste it into your browser): http://www.footbag.org/ifpa/vote/6 At that destination you will also find complete descriptions of each position, a bio for each candidate, and a brief statement of purpose for each candidate. This time around, we don't have a lot of choices, though in the future we hope to have additional ballot issues so that you can voice your opinion on important issues before the Association. And despite our open nominations process which was announced a while ago, we only have the candidates above, so your choices should be pretty straightforward. That said, it would help us a lot if you exercised your right to vote as an IFPA member. It will help us know you care, and will give votes of confidence to the folks on the ballot. The election is open for 10 days. It will close on December 20th, and the elected directors will assume their positions on January 1, 2003. Next year, we'll have even more positions up for re-election (again, see the by-laws). We hope you will consider who you might nominate to represent YOU next time, as we are truly looking to make IFPA *your* association. Thanks for your time. The US Open Freestyle Championships on December 28th (and shredding from Friday, the 27th - Sunday the 29th) is looking great! Free Lunch on Saturday, stop by our room at the Hyatt before 11:00 Saturday before you walk over to the site, and pack your lunch from Quizno's and carry it in to McCormick Place (we can't serve the food at McCormick because of a contract for food with ARA, it's a union thing) We are an IFPA sanctioned event, and part of this sanctioning is making sure that all our pro players are card carrying members of the IFPA, and we encourage the intermediates to join too. So this is a heads up for pro and intermediate players, if you are not an IFPA member, we will subsidize your IFPA membership by paying half, and the other $5 will be added to your entry fee. If this is a major problem for you and you can't muster the 5 bucks, just let me know and we'll work something out. I'm flexible and I want you to compete, so don't let that stop you. Anyway, soon the IFPA will be offering some neat services for players that will really make being a member into a valuable item. Thanks to all who are members to this new organization and even though it doesn't seem like much is happening, we are working tirelessly on adding value to your membership and there will be new services offered soon. We have some great sponsors, not many, but I want to make sure you know how much they are helping to make this a great event. -Quizno's Subs (a local shop at UIC) is donating three 6' subs for Saturday, but we can't bring them AND serve them at McCormick place, so we will let you know what room to go to at the Hyatt on Saturday before the event and pick up your lunch. We will have "wraps" and bags to carry your lunch to the site (200' away through indoor walkways). -World Footbag Association, worldfootbag.com, is donating huge amounts of prizes including Tricks of the Trade Video's, and some stuff we can sell on the site to help increase prize money. Thanks big-time! -Freedom Footbags, footbag.tv, is donating copious amounts of footbags (my personal favorite) and will help make sure every competitor wins something, and that the prize pool grows. -Footbag.org, without this awesome service, it would be impossible to promote this event to the players, thank you Steve Goldberg for making it such a great resource, and for all the new stuff that you are working on too. IFPA, who sanctioned this event, even though Chard the Sanctioning Director is in the first month or so of caring for his first baby, still managed to get us sanctioned. These results will be among the first to be entered into the IFPA results database, which is monumental in a sense, because this database is about to emerge as the defacto standard for monitoring growth of our sport. -Communications Direct, donating the Sound System, handheld radio's, tables and chairs, and the connection necessary to get into and be a part of this massive event. -CopySetCenter, copyset.com, printed materials, signage, fliers, artwork support and digital printing. -MPEA and MOSE, Metropolitan Pier and Exposition Authority and the Mayors Office of Special Events in Chicago. These guys have given us a site near the popular BMX Bikes and Skateboarding (right in our demographic), they have given us a 100' x100' square carpeted floor, electical outlets, a hundred chairs and 20 tables, and they are letting us get away without buying our own insurance which would have killed our prize pool fund. Due to budgetary constraints, I have had to modify the shirts to short sleeve, but they are still 100% cotton, and 100% homegrown artwork from Zeke. Major freestyler shirt, a Must-Have! Really nice, and free to Pro and Intermediate players and discounted to Novices while supplies last. Huge thanks to all our sponsors! Please make sure you support them when it comes time to buy your next footbag, or your next sandwich. Can't wait to see you all at the event. Oh, and be early on Saturday. We are running a tight schedule and everything will run on time, regardless of if people are unaccounted for. This is a show too and we can't run over 5:00, and we have a lot to do in one day. Best regards, Scott Davidson enlightener@footbag.org
