My name's Chris Ott, and for those who don't know me, I'm the marketing director for the International Footbag Players' Association, Inc. (the 501(c)(3) charitable non-profit corporation that is responsible for the World Footbag Championships as well as footbag.org). We've been working hard over the last two years to raise awareness of the sport of footbag and to provide an environment in which footbag can flourish. One fact about footbag is that we are now, more than ever, a global sport. Players find themselves travelling far and wide for footbag competition, and as part of our goal of fostering that competition, we're proud to announce a new benefit for IFPA players: The IFPA Member Travel Discount with United Airlines and Lufthansa! Members of IFPA can get up to 15% discounts on flights for certain sanctioned footbag tournaments over the coming months, including (most importantly) the World Footbag Championships in Prague, Czech Republic. Since Lufthansa flies to Prague, this is hopefully a great plan thing for European players, and since United flies to Europe from the U.S. and Canada, we hope our North American players will benefit even more. To take advantage of this discount for any of the upcoming events (see below), you must be an IFPA member in good standing. You can tell your status by going to http://www.footbag.org/ifpa/join -- that page will show you your current expiration date, or offer you a chance to join if you aren't currently a member. Membership is only $10 a year -- one of the lowest annual fees of any organized sports association. If you're a member (or after you join/renew), write me directly to get the details you need to book your tickets using this discount. Send an e-mail to me at with your IFPA membership number and full name (be sure your e-mail is set up so your real name shows up in your From: line, or else my spam filter may delete your mail.) Also, make sure the subject line of your e-mail includes the words "IFPA travel discount" so I know that's what you're writing about and can give you a prompt reply! This discount is currently available for travel FROM anywhere serviced by United or Lufthansa, TO any of the following IFPA-sanctioned footbag events: 2003 Montreal International Footbag Championships http://www.footbag.org/events/show/1039550946 Montreal, Quebec, Canada July 11-13, 2003 Canadian Open Footbag Championships http://www.footbag.org/events/show/1034985978 Vancouver, BC, Canada July 19-20, 2003 European Footbag Championships 2003 http://www.footbag.org/events/show/1042821772 Frankfurt, Germany July 18-20, 2003 (Note: Frankfurt stop can be extended to include Prague, but you have to fly back from Frankfurt to get the best rate.) 24th Annual WORLD FOOTBAG CHAMPIONSHIPS http://www.footbag.org/worlds2003 Prague, Czech Republic July 28-August 3, 2003 Note: you must be an active IFPA member to fly using this discount, and you must buy your tickets directly from United Airlines (so, if you want to use this discount, don't book until you talk to me). Since Lufthansa is a code-share partner with United, there are some details you'll need to know if you want to book a Lufthansa flight, and there may be certain situations where the discount could be unavailable. This discount is also available to other IFPA-sanctioned events. So, if you are a tournament organizer and would like to set up your event to take advantage of this program, please see Chard Cook to request sanctioning, and then contact me for more information once your event is sanctioned. See you at the next IFPA footbag event! In preparation of the big concert and party in the Rote Fabrik after the freestyle finals, Kamilean (aka Ra'San Jong, who some of you might remember as one of the founding fathers of OOPS freestyle club in Hermosa Beach, California) and Redemption Sound from Berlin have recorded a song about the event and about footbag freestyle. Check it out! You can download it for free at http://www.footjam.ch And try to hit the lyrics!!! Once again I would like to remind everybody who's planning to come to the FootJam to please register online at http://www.footjam.ch. It helps us a lot with the organization especially since we're providing free food for all registered players and we need to know how large a truck we need to hijack for the supplies. :) Jan Zimmermann P.S. Most of the top freestylers in Europe will be at this event, as well as Ryan Mulroney! So please make it if you can! You won't be let down. The last details have been dealt with for the Montreal tournament on May 31. It's a freestyle only tournament with shred30 and routines competitions. People will be shredding on Friday and Sunday too. It will be the greatest tournament for the players and the crowd this year. All the details - including driving directions and hotel info is on http://www.footbag.org/events/show/1045628278 Ellis Piltz, Scott Bevier, Yacine Merzouk, Sebastien Duchesne, Jonathan Schneider, and Caro Bourgoin have already confirmed they will attend. $800 in prize money + 500 dollars in prizes to players + $300 in prizes to the crowd. We are having the tournament in a big theatre downtown. We visited hotels to make sure players can be close to the tournament and have a nice room. We have 2 host hotels with prices ranging from $26 to $200 / night. We made sure we have rooms available for shred if it rains. We have the greatest restaurant for player's meeting/lunch before the competition and the bad-assest site for the player's party after the competition - beer is $1. Underaged players (17 years old or younger) can shred at the Shred Zone (a footbag store and training facility) all night because they can't go to the player's party - sorry! We already handed out over 1000 flyers and we expect to have a sold-out crowd of 425. You *HAVE* to be there. For more info write to challenge@shredzone.ca or call the Shred Zone 514-845-8887.
