Ever since the long tradition of Western Regionals (one of the biggest annual freestyle gatherings) ended, the northern California freestyle scene has been quietly simmering on the back burner. Well -- it's time to light a fire and bring it to a boil!!! With much thanks to Sunil Jani and the UCSF Footbag Club, as well as the UCSF Fitness Center, I'm proud to host a one-day freestyle jam in San Francisco, on Sunday, December 28th, 2003! The event will take place from 1:00pm until around 6 or 6:30pm at the City Lights conference room in Milberry Student Union, at 500 Parnassus in San Francisco (on the U.C. San Francisco campus near the southeast corner of Golden Gate Park). We have a few exciting plans for this event: - Ales "Man of Steel" Zelinka, one of the top players from Czech Republic, will grace us with his freestyle insanity! - Ryan "The Regulator" Mulroney will be our full-time DJ, playing non-stop shred music the whole afternoon. - Many Bay Area and So-Cal freestylers are already confirmed. This will be a great opportunity for new players to meet others from nearby, and to learn, watch, bond, and enjoy the energy of today's freestyle scene. - Yours Truly will be coaching beginners and anyone who wants to brush up on their fundamentals. - If there's room, we'll have a raging four-square competition for those folks who aren't intent on shredding their legs away. After the event, we'll have a group dinner TBD on Sunday evening (ca. 7:15pm). For folks seriously interested in going out to dinner afterwards (someplace cheap, don't worry) I'll try to organize it if I get a rough headcount before the event itself. So be sure to e-mail me directly if you plan to attend and would like to be included in dinner. Think "pizza" or some other group-style dining experience, probably in a restaurant unless someone wants to volunteer their pad! For the record, both Sunil Jani and Tu Vu, whose club is sponsoring this event, will be (unfortunately) out of town. So I'm the main contact, and please don't bug Tu about the event if you can help it. (Also, I can't put people up at my house, so please don't ask. Sorry but my house is 30 miles away from the site, and public transportation to/from my house and San Francisco is not very accessible on the weekends, unfortunately.) E-mail me with any questions, or check the website for the latest updates at: http://www.footbag.org/events/show/1070400528 Steve P.S. We really want to use this opportunity to inspire players in and around UCSF. So if you have any friends that go to UCSF, be sure to tell them about the event!!! The best thing that could happen is that we help seed the next generation of players in San Francisco so that the First Family doesn't miss Sunil too much!
