The goal of this event is to promote our club and the sport. The days activities will include a freestyle and consecutives competition for beginners (first time competitors) and a freestyle shred for all. I hope to have some footbags to offer as prizes to the competitors. I will definitely have food to offer anyone who makes it. I also have a small amount of money ($35) to divide up among anyone who travels to kick. Hopefully our club equipment order will arrive this week which will include a net. The few of us here that have been introduced to competitive kicking have not become real skilled at net yet, but anyone who would like to come and give us some tips / schooling, is definitely welcome. Our school is located about 1 hour and 45 minutes south of DC. A few DC Allstars have made verbal commitments (Vince and the Vu brothers). Anyone else that is reasonably close (U-Penn kickers), please try to make it. Goldberg" Subject: [announce] Sports Illustrated and footbag! Sender: owner-announce@footbag.org Footbag friends, Yes, the rumors are true. Sports Illustrated is going to be running a story on the recent World Footbag Championships in Montreal -- they spent several days during the event taking photos and talking to all the players and organizers, but they couldn't tell us for sure if or when a story would run in the magazine. Well, today I found out that the footbag story will run in one of the next two issues of Sports Illustrated! The only problem (and it's kind of a big one) is that the footbag article will only appear in the SUBSCRIPTION version of the magazine. This means that you will NOT be able to go to the newsstand and buy Sports Illustrated containing coverage of the World Footbag Championships. (It seems like this kind of thing keeps happening to us... Like the time ABC covered footbag on their Good Morning America program but they put us on the Sunday morning version of the program that nobody watches and then it turned out *that* particular Sunday was preempted in 90% of the country because of the New York Marathon...) So, anyone who has a subscription to Sports Illustrated, please watch for the article! I hope someone can make a deal with SI to get bulk copies of the magazine for everyone else who may want them. This is gnarly, in my opinion, but par for the course. Regardless, I'm psyched that we have made the big time yet again -- congratulations to Yves, Sharon, Kevin, Martin, and all the Montreal crew, and to Bruce, Peter, and WFA, and to all the great players that made this year's Worlds so spectacular. Oh, and watch for the ESPN coverage starting THIS SUNDAY on "Unbelievable Sports"! I think it's on at 6:30pm Eastern Time; I don't know if the show airs at the same time or if it's tape delayed for different timezones. Maybe someone can find out and let everyone know... Steve P.S. If you'd like to post a follow-up message to this one for general discussion, please post to the footbag@footbag.org mailing list and not to announce@footbag.org. Thanks. The Sports Illustrated article on footbag is in the December issue! As we were told, however, it is only in the subscription issue -- you cannot find it at the newsstands. A friend of mine who gets the magazine received his in the mail today and there was a two-page article spotlighting our very own deity, Kenny Shults himself. I haven't seen the article yet, so I can't give more information -- but congratulations Kenny! I believe others were also mentioned in the article. It's great to get so much publicity for our sport. ESPN will come through! The ESPN program covering the World Footbag Championships was not on last week as we announced -- we were given the wrong date and time by the production company. The coverage is actually supposed to air *this* Sunday on "Unbelievable Sports", at 6:30-7pm Eastern, 5:30-6pm Central, 4:30-5pm Mountain, and 3:30-4pm Pacific time. It should be awesome, so everyone watch! Again, congratulations to everyone who helped make this such a banner year for footbag. See you all at the next big one. :-) Steve From owner-announce@eniac.yak.net Fri Nov 22 02:16:16 1996 Received: (from majordom@localhost) (fnord) by eniac.yak.net (8.7.5/8.6.9) id CAA12322 for announce-outgoing; Fri, 22 Nov 1996 02:15:16 GMT Received: from brat@research.apple.com () via =-=-=-=-=-= for announce@majordomo.footbag.org (12287) Received: from Market.NET (Market.NET [140.174.206.2]) (fnord) by eniac.yak.net (8.7.5/8.6.9) with ESMTP id CAA12285 for ; Fri, 22 Nov 1996 02:14:03 GMT Received: from eniac.yak.net (eniac.Yak.NET [140.174.206.7]) by Market.NET (8.7.6/8.7.3) with ESMTP id KAA17529 for ; Thu, 21 Nov 1996 10:09:34 -0800 Received: from [204.188.8.41] ([17.127.19.236]) (fnord) by eniac.yak.net (8.7.5/8.6.9) with ESMTP id CAA12282 for ; Fri, 22 Nov 1996 02:13:59 GMT Message-Id: Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Date: Thu, 21 Nov 1996 10:09:54 -0800 To: announce@footbag.org From: "Steven L. Goldberg" Subject: [announce] ESPN: Forget I said anything... Sender: owner-announce@footbag.org I'm really sorry, folks, I'm just as annoyed by all these e-mail messages about ESPN as the rest of you. I wish it were easier to tell what was going on. But it appears that ESPN will NOT be showing Unbelievable Sports for the next two weeks -- they have live Horse Racing both of the following Sundays, and that old tennis program we all know and love this morning. So please disregard my previous message and I *promise* not to send another message about ESPN until we know absolutely positively when the show will air. To summarize: UNBELIEVABLE SPORTS WILL NOT BE ON TODAY OR SUNDAY OR NEXT WEEK Hopefully our contacts will figure it out and tell us when it *will* be on. Sorry to get everyone's hopes up. Steve
