Goldberg" Subject: [announce] NEW Footbag Event Registration Service Sender: owner-announce@footbag.org Footbag players, fans, and friends: I am very pleased to announce that I have developed a new on-line resource for footbag, which I placed on the Footbag WorldWide website this morning: The FOOTBAG EVENT REGISTRY ... at http://www.footbag.org/events.html This new service replaces the old event listings on Footbag WorldWide with a much nicer system that is much more up to date and requires very little maintenance (hopefully). [I am mostly done with a similar system for the club listings, so bear with me a couple more weeks and I should have something more to announce...] In summary, event organizers can now fill out a form on-line, and within a few hours (once the request is approved), their event will be *automatically* added to the event list. This new system uses a relational database (for those technoids among you) and event listings are generated "on-the-fly" from the database. This means tracking changes, making updates, consistency with the WFA database, and other manipulations are significantly improved over the previous ad hoc method I was using (i.e., I was doing everything by hand before). The benefits of the new system are: (1) FAST TURN-AROUND: The turn-around time from when an event organizer submits a listing request to when the web page (and listing in the event list and "what's new" page) is now INCREDIBLY short compared to before -- on the order of an hour or so (as long as it takes me to hit the "approve" button). (2) UPDATE YOUR OWN EVENT INFO: Event organizers can now manage their own event information -- i.e., if something changes (like the date, location, or other details for your event), you can just go in and fix it yourself, very simply, using a web-based interface. The event pages are password-protected (you get to choose a password when you fill out the initial form) and can be modified from any modern web browser (except, obviously, for Juliet's :-)). (3) RESULTS TRACKING: [Coming soon...] Results can be posted by event organizers to the same database, so that there will always be a running history of all events and their results. (Until now, I had been very lax about updating event pages to include results; the results section of the website is very weak. But when I'm done with this next set of changes, it will all be automated and super-slick. :-)) (4) SEARCHING: [Coming soon...] You can search for events and results by date, city, state, name, or event organizer. ***** If you are the organizer for an upcoming footbag event, and you haven't already received direct e-mail from me telling you that your event is on the site, *PLEASE* go and fill out the event registration form as soon as possible. Here's the URL -- just copy and/or drag it into your (modern) web browser: http://www.footbag.org/newevents/regevent The rest of you, please check out the new list at http://www.footbag.org/events.html -- please feel free to give any comments, on the list or in private. Comments to the list should go to footbag@footbag.org and not to the announce list. Thanks. Steve P.S. Please note that this system is still experimental and there may be problems; if you experience any significant problems (such as errors that don't go away and/or garbled text you can't understand) please copy the contents of the web window and e-mail it to me as soon as you can. Note also that I am aware of a bunch of little things that need fixing up; so try to send me important comments/errors only. Thanks again.
