Sender: owner-announce@footbag.org Footbag fans, players, and friends: This is a final update of information for the 1997 World Footbag Championships, which is happening ALL NEXT WEEK, August 11-17, 1997, in Portland, Oregon. I *STRONGLY RECOMMEND* everyone interested in this event take a minute to go to the Worlds '97 Home Page and print out all the information there, including the final schedule of events, right now. I will include a copy of the schedule below as well for those of you who can't access the web -- but please go to the site to get all the details! They are at: http://www.footbag.org/worlds97 If you have trouble accessing the site, e-mail me directly for information -- don't bug the Worlds staff if you can avoid it, as they are in the final throws of putting the event together. I have access to most of the information and can readily forward it on to you. Please try to get to the site TODAY (Friday) since I and most other people will be harder to get in touch with starting Saturday. Here are some important facts. Please read carefully the parts that apply to you: --- The 1997 World Footbag Championships will start this Monday morning. If you are pre-registered, you still must have someone report to the competitor check-in by 12:00 noon to pick up your player pack and confirm your registration! If you have any changes to make to your entry form, you must show up in person. Obviously, if you have not yet registered, Monday morning will be your LAST CHANCE. You may also register during the Pioneers Tournament this weekend (see the website for all the details about when and where). --- FREESTYLERS NOTE: this year's schedule is different than in years past! Freestyle begins on WEDNESDAY (instead of Thursday) and ENDS ON FRIDAY NIGHT! This means there is no freestyle on Saturday night; we will hopefully have a place to shred to keep the tradition of a Holidome Shred alive, but it will not be an official event. If you are competing in freestyle, you must attend the Tuesday evening freestyle players' meeting, which includes a judging clinic. ALL COMPETITORS ARE REQUIRED TO JUDGE. Look at this commitment as a great experience and a great way to learn more about competition freestyle if you've never done it before. Don't worry -- you will learn what you need to know and your judging assignment will be given to you before the clinic, so you will know what to focus on. Also, there will be THREE ROUNDS of all open freestyle events (including Mixed Doubles), but there will only be TWO ROUNDS of intermediate freestyle. There will be no intermediate freestyle competition on Friday night -- intermediate freestyle finals are Thursday. The judging system will be the IFAB Formula-Based system, which is explained in gory detail in the IFAB Rulebook, available on-line at http://ifab.footbag.org --- INTERNET STUFF (for those of you not going to Worlds!): because I will be away for over a week, please be patient if things stop working smoothly. For example, because our e-mail list is being spammed daily, I have disabled most of the automated majordomo software. This means particularly that subscriptions are not automatically approved, so if you need to change your subscription status or if you know someone who's trying to join, you may have to wait a day or more to get results (i.e., until I have time to log in and deal with it). However, valid members of the list posting from the same e-mail address under which they're registered may post as usual with no delays. I still must approve e-mail sent to the "announce" list, however, so if you post to that, please be allow 1-2 days for approval. If you have trouble accessing www.footbag.org or list.footbag.org, please report this to me via an e-mail message, and cc the report to grw@market.net since he can probably fix the problem for me. If you must get in touch with me urgently for any reason, send e-mail and leave a phone message at the Silver Cloud Inn in Portland. If you're having trouble making changes to a club listing or upcoming event info, please wait until after the Worlds to bug me about it. --- GETTING AROUND and WHERE TO GO: the schedule of events (below) lists each site for each time of day. Some of the sites are nearby, others are far away. If you haven't already got an idea of how you're going to get around in Portland, you might want to start figuring that out. Rental cars are relatively cheap (thanks to the good work of the event organizers) via Budget; the information is on the website. Public transit is possible for most cases, but you may want to find someone with a car who can commit to helping you get around. Directions to the various sites are not given, but if you pre-registered you should have gotten a map with the sites indicated. If you don't have such a map, please refer to the addresses and/or other location information in the schedule below. The locations are mostly self-explanatory. --- WHERE TO STAY: by now you should have reserved a room at one of the hotels. See the website for the main and alternate hotel info. There are probably other places available for camping and hostelling, but that information is not available so you're on your own. Contact Oaks Travel for any last-minute plans, at 1-800-359-6694. --- THAT'S ALL I CAN THINK OF. Sorry if I missed an important topic. See many (most?) of you in Portland this weekend or next week! Sender: owner-announce@footbag.org Today was the first day of competition at the 18th Annual World Footbag Championships in Portland, Oregon (USA). The day started out a big success with a wonderful opening ceremony that included the singing of the US National Anthem and a keynote speech by John Stalberger (Mr. Hacky Sack, coinventor of the first footbag). There are approximately 200 players registered for this year's event -- breaking all previous records! Exact numbers and breakdowns (by country, gender, and category) will be forthcoming as available. Today's events included all of the consecutives events as well as the first round of golf. Complete results from today's consecutives events will be posted tomorrow (hopefully), but for now, here is the big news: -- NEW WOMEN'S WORLD RECORD! -- Ida Fogle kicked 804 in the 5-minute timed consecutives event, breaking her own previous world record (799). This result, once verified, will go into the Guinness Book of World Records. --- Andy Linder, the current men's 5-minute timed consecutives record-holder (with 1019) attempted to break his record, but fell just short (with 1009, still an amazing result, and winning Andy this year's World Championship title). This was Andy's final World Championships appearance -- he announced toda that he is now retired from footbag competition. (He also won today's Doubles Distance One-Pass consecutives event with partner and WFA president Bruce Guettich.) --- That's it for now. Gotta go to sleep now so I can actually compete tomorrow. I wish the rest of you could be here. The weather's great and it's a wonderful event so far. Another update tomorrow. The board meets annually to consider rule changes and to act as an oversight and steering committee for the sport. For those who aren't familiar with IFAB and its charter, all this information may be found on the IFAB website, http://ifab.footbag.org. (Note: the rulebook on the website will not be updated for several weeks to reflect the rule changes below.) The following is a short summary of rule changes -- the wording is to be worked out by the committees involved and will appear in the rulebook to go into effect on January 1, 1998. This year, for the first time ever, the rulebook will be available in print and on-line *before* the new calendar year! .............. RULE CHANGES FOR 1998 ............... NOTE: these are rough notes, and not the official wording. Again, the official wording will be available in the rulebook. Footbag Net: A. Uniforms: Uniforms are now encouraged to be worn by competitors in net events. B. Pool order: In a round-robin format with a pool of 4 teams/individuals, the order of play within the pool has been changed. The new order (given teams/individuals seeded 1-4), will be: (1) 1 vs 3 and 2 vs 4 (2) 1 vs 4 and 2 vs 3 (3) 1 vs 2 and 3 vs 4 Freestyle: A. Head judge: A section will be added to 505.01 (g) to define the "head judge" who will take on the following responsibilities during the freestyle competition: (1) monitoring the overall judging process, ensuring that judges are ready and present for each routine; (2) watching all the routines in the pool; (3) ensuring accuracy and fairness in judging (i.e., if the presentation judges' scores are too dissimilar, the head judge must discuss this with the presentation judges to try to reach consensus, and may decide to reject one judges' scores if they are deemed to be out of line) (4) being the official point of contact for players who want to follow up on their scores from that round, and/or to raise a dispute (players are not to dispute scores with, nor otherwise communicate with the other judges during the round). B. Live music: Live accompaniment is explicitly allowed for freestyle routines, as long as it is made clear to all judges that the accompaniment is live before the routine begins. C. Doubles freestyle scoring: Wording will be added to the formula-based judging system to clarify the details of several aspects of doubles freestyle scoring: (1) composition scores are for the team, not for the individuals. Example: a unique add-value move performed by one team-member is a unique move for the team -- if the other player does the same move (on the same side of the body), it is not a second unique move. (More details in actual wording to come.) (2) there is a special add category, "co-op", for which an add is awarded in the following cases: a. when two players perform the same move in perfect synchrony (i.e., "mirroring") -- one add is given total for the synch, not two; b. when an add-value move is performed by one partner from an add-value set by the other partner (this has been called "add-to-add pass"); c. when any move is performed by one player while the other player is presenting an obstacle (such as a leg) -- this is commonly referred to as "hooping"; NOTE: hooping is *not* a dexterity, it is a "co-op". ......... END OF RULE CHANGES FOR 1998 ........... I won't bug all of you with the detailed minutes from the IFAB meeting, but I know a bunch of you will want to see them. I will e-mail them to the footbag@footbag.org mailing list tomorrow. If you're not on that list, please e-mail me directly for a copy of the minutes. Steve
