We will have six excellent courts for 8 hours on each day. We will provide a bracket for any category of players of whom at least four are present, but there will not be a mixed doubles category.Singles Saturday,Doubles Sunday. There will be some sort of golf competition for those who are interested, though the format(s)(two par 9 holes?)may be a bit unusual. We welcome freestylers who may want to shred, but since we mostly play THE GAME here in town, there will be no freestyle "competition"-sorry. There will be no entry fee. Desire to enjoy the playing of THE GAME is required. We will attempt to provide floor space for those who need it. There will be further info here in the future. There may be info at the Sound Footwork WebSite, which is cool and should be visited anyway. Sender: owner-announce@footbag.org Hi, all you event organizers with e-mail... As you may have come to realize, the Internet is turning into one of the better ways to get the word out about your event, both to the core group of regular tournament-goers, and to the throngs of new players just dying for some footbag action in their town. :-) So this note is meant to remind you that you have two avenues to promote your events, now and as your tournament dates approach: (1) REGISTER your event on the "upcoming events" list *NOW*, at http://www.footbag.org/events/ (2) ANNOUNCE your event (and its results) by sending e-mail to announce@footbag.org when you have finalized details (Please don't cross-post announcements; all announcements of upcoming events should be mailed to announce@footbag.org alone, which will go to *everyone*, so there's no need to cc the message to either the footbag or freestyle lists. Don't worry, all announcements must be approved by yours truly before they go out to the list, so the quality and accuracy of such announcements will be relatively high.) Also, please try to limit the number of announcements for a given event to two: one when you finalize the details for the event (date, location, etc.) and want to let people know about it, and the second when your event is close at hand as a reminder. All other follow-up information should be sent to footbag@footbag.org and placed on your event's web listing. I would like to STRONGLY RECOMMEND that all event organizers go *now* to the website at http://www.footbag.org/events/ and stake your claim on a date for the upcoming season, even if your event is not until next summer. If you have a clue when your event will be, please go ahead and add it to the list. You can write me directly if you have further questions. You just follow the links and fill out a form and your event will be listed for all to see. (Yes, tentative dates and locations are fine; it's better to let people know you're planning to have an event at all than to leave everyone wondering.) Note: all events listed on the Footbag WorldWide website will be automatically fed to the WFA for listing in their magazine and for general information. However, official IFAB sanctioning must be done through the proper channels, and this listing is *not* a substitute for that. For more information on IFAB sanctioning, contact the WFA by e-mail to wfa@worldfootbag.com, or by calling them during regular business hours (information is on their website at http://worldfootbag.com). The World Footbag Championships will only accept seeding information from officially-sanctioned events that follow the IFAB sanctioning guidelines. I hope to have more of this information online in the future, with the possibility of an on-line IFAB sanctioning process. But for now, contact WFA. Thanks. Please take a moment to read it. IF YOU MUST SKIM, please read items 8-11 carefully. ** GENERAL: ** 1. For the record, the e-mail lists @footbag.org are managed as a free service to the footbag community by the World-Wide Footbag Foundation, Inc., a California Non-Profit Corporation based in Santa Clara, California (USA). The lists are managed on an entirely volunteer basis by Steve Goldberg (me), who acts as list administrator and "postmaster". 2. The mailing list, "announce@footbag.org", is a special mailing list reserved for footbag-related announcements. It is guaranteed to be "low-volume" and for legitimate footbag announcements only. Posting to it will reach the members of *all* lists (including footbag and freestyle). In other words, if you are a member of any list @footbag.org, you are also a member of "announce". This is essentially automatic. You may also choose to be a member of announce without being a member of another list, if all you want is periodic announcements. You may not unsubscribe from this list while you are a member of another list @footbag.org. 3. Membership information is kept confidential; WWFF, Inc. will not sell or give away, in whole or in part, any of the e-mail lists we maintain. 4. Membership requests (including removal requests) must be sent by the party in question. It is not possible to join or remove anyone but yourself. For information on joining or leaving lists, see http://list.footbag.org or e-mail me directly . 4. The lists are "closed" -- only members may post to the lists. 5. The lists are archived publically at http://list.footbag.org so that members or non-members alike may research previous conversations or announcements on the lists over the Web. 6. Any member may post to a list by sending to the list address. For example, to post to the "freestyle" list, simply e-mail your message to "freestyle@footbag.org". (By the way, people seem confused about the "-digest" lists. They are just a variation of the regular lists; posting to "footbag", for example, ends up being delivered to people on both "footbag" and "footbag-digest". You SHOULD NOT post to the "-digest" lists.) 7. The "announce@footbag.org" list is moderated -- in other words, mailing to it does not automatically mean your message will go out. It must be approved by the administrator before being posted. To qualify for posting, your message must be of relevance to the greater footbag community, including non-players, and must be an announcement and not a discussion topic. Discussion may only take place on the specific topic lists, e.g., general "footbag", or "freestyle". All rejected messages will be returned with an explanation. ** RULES: ** (strictly enforced, or offenders are removed after 1 warning): 8. NO CROSS-POSTING. This means it is never permissible for you to post a message to two lists at once, by using multiple mailing lists either on the "To:" or "Cc:" lines of a message. It doesn't matter why you think it is a good idea, it is not allowed. If you have an announcement to make, please send it to announce@footbag.org (to which all list members are joined). This rule includes cross-posting to other mailing lists unrelated to footbag.org. (It is never appropriate to try to merge two unrelated discussions in a single e-mailing. The lists are topic-based and therefore, by their very nature, no single discussion may span two lists.) 9. NO "OFF-TOPIC" E-MAIL. This means it is *never* appropriate to post any messages to any of the lists @footbag.org that are not related to the topic of the list. Each list has a specific topic as described when you joined and at . Furthermore, it is not appropriate in any context to e-mail jokes (unless footbag-related), general news items, chain letters, "spams", or other unrelated e-mail to the lists. There are no exceptions to this policy. Even if you think it's the most important thing in the world, if it's not related directly to footbag, DO NOT SEND IT. (One of the most common examples of this is the ever-present "e-mail virus warning" message. There is no real "e-mail virus", so if you get a message telling you there is, delete it immediately -- that's the virus. Do not forward it to any of the lists. And rest assured that I am on top of most of these types of things anyway. If you ever have a doubt, e-mail me directly as opposed to sending your message to the list.) 10. NO PRIVATE E-MAIL. Some people (especially newer members) are unaware of which e-mail they receive is "private", and which is from the footbag list(s) they're on. Always be sure to read the "To:" and "Cc:" lines of incoming e-mail to determine if the mail is directly to you, or to the list in general. (Sometimes it will be To: you and Cc: the list. That means it was sent to the list.) If a message was sent only to you (perhaps as the result of your posting a previous message to the list), please understand that it is *not appropriate* to reply to this private e-mail by sending it to the list. It is furthermore inappropriate to quote a message out of context by incorporating someone else's private comments to you (or even comments from another list) in a posting to the list. Please be very conscious of which correspondence you send *and* receive is private versus public. (Some e-mail programs have a different "reply" command when the reply should go to the list, sometimes called "reply to all". Be sure you understand how your e-mail program handles replies.) 11. NO PERSONAL ATTACKS. Sometimes discussions lead to arguments, disputes, misunderstandings, etc. While it is expected and natural for people to be offended, become defensive, and want to publically justify their position or make their opinion known on a topic related to the list, it is *required* that such discussion not become "personal" in nature. In other words, comments that might be read as "intentionally demeaning or offensive" to a particular individual are not permitted. You can certainly defend your position and let your thoughts be known without getting "personal" in the public forum. Think of the discussion lists @footbag.org as meetings where every message you send is analagous to your stepping up to the podium in front of a room full of people to answer a question or give your comment. ** NETIQUETTE: ** (suggested rules, not strictly enforced) 12. SUBJECT LINES. Discussions tend to clump into what are generally referred to as "threads", i.e., "threads of discourse". To help list members keep track of which messages relate to which threads, most members take advantage of the "Subject:" line in their e-mail. So, when replying to a message on the list, please ensure that the subject line in your outgoing message matches the subject line you're replying to. If you are the first to reply, be sure you add "Re:" to the front of the subject line. If you are a member of a "digest" and you are replying to a message, please construct a new message and type the correct subject line; do not reply to the digest itself (as the subject will be "Re: Footbag Digest #302", for example). 13. QUOTATIONS. The ">" symbol at the beginning of a line is usually the indicator of a "quotation" of a previous message; we refer to lines of text that begin with ">" as "quoted" text. This is not a pedantic attempt at subversion or misdirection, but is rather a very useful way for people to reply to specific points in a discussion by refreshing everyone's mind of the particular point to which they are replying. This is generally a good thing. It is also generally important to say *who* you're quoting, and to make sure you have it right. HOWEVER, it is bad netiquette to include someone's *entire* message (quoted or otherwise) in your reply. Please be sure to delete all but the relevant quotation in your reply. Also, it is bad netiquette to "bury" your reply within the quotation itself. Be sure that *your* original text begins on a fresh blank line, not beginning with a ">", and with at least a blank line before and after the quotation. This ensures that people can find your comments quickly. 14. CATCH UP. If you haven't read a list in a day or two (or in a week or two), and there are messages on the list, please try to read them *all* before replying to *any* of them. Sometimes the exact same thing you are about to say was already said a day or sometimes a week before! The rest of the group may be pretty much "in sync", and you may come along a week later and inject a comment that only serves to confuse an issue or stoke an argument that had otherwise died down. Please try to read all messages on a list before replying to any of them. This shouldn't take too long compared to the confusion it can cause. (Think of this as a similar to walking in on the middle of a conversation, only you've basically walked *out* in the middle and are now coming back with a comment.) The discussion will flow much better if you wait to read all the comments in a certain thread before adding your own. It also works well to quote one of the later comments as a start for your reply, instead of quoting the original message which may be "stale" by the time you reply. But obviously this is your call. ------ Thanks for reading this. I hope it's not an annoyance that I send this type of information out from time to time; but I think it's a good way to ensure that we all get the most we can out of the footbag e-mail lists and that we all have the same point of departure for discussions into the future. Questions, comments, complaints? Please feel free to e-mail me directly. See http://www.footbag.org/discussion.html for more information. The 1997 X-must JAM! ---When: Wednesday, December 31, 1997 through Saturday, January 3, 1998 ---Where: Las Vegas, Nevada ---What: This event is not a competition, it is intended to be the one time of year that everyone can get together and shred, without the routines. All levels of play are encouraged to attend, and there will be *free* lessons for beginners (and pros ;->) alike. There will be a player's party and jam shortly after four o' clock pm on New Year's eve, and daily 2-6 hour shreds until Saturday. Also note that there will *not* be an X-mas Jam in Flint Michigan this year. ---How: This is the tricky part. As of yet, the "host hotel" has not been chosen. The main reason for this (besides the fact that I am a procrastinator, and no one else wants to do this) is that it is extremely difficult to get any sort of "group discount" anywhere in Las Vegas at this time of year. I have spoken with the event's "official" travel agent Charles Shaffer, and apparently Las Vegas is "the place to be" at New Year's, in fact, it's becoming more popular than New York's Times Square. I am planning to reserve a block of rooms at some fairly "cheap" place which at this time of year will run you around $100.00+ a night (i.e. plan on having either multiple occupancy or multiple monies). The number of rooms I reserve will depend on your input, so please r.s.v.p. a.s.a.p. so I know how many. I'm tentatively planning on around reserving around 25 rooms, though hopefully we will see a lot more players! Other than the cost of hotel and travel, the event will be *FREE* - assuming there is good weather and we can kick outside - otherwise we may have to take up a collection and rent out some space - though it may not be a the host hotel, since ballrooms can cost $150.00++ for one evening!! I am still looking into both the hotel and kicking location matters and will post information on both as soon as possible. (NOTE that your input is essential for this event to be a success ~ as I said, I need to have an idea of how many people are coming so I know how many rooms to reserve.) Also, the following people are planning on attending; Rippin, Paul Munger, Greg and Diana Nelson, Sean Wingert, the local Las Vegas players (at least I assume), and myself, (plus I have heard rumors that Steve (Cosmo) may make it, *and* I'm hoping to see the other Bapers, including those just initiated). Also, not every player will be able to attend for the entire time, but players are encouraged to at least make the New Year's Eve party/jam and stay until Friday, January 2nd. (But, since the event ends on Saturday, some players may elect to say until as late as Sunday, we shall see). ---Travel Info: (I have elected to make Oaks Travel the "official" travel agent for this event. There will be competition in intermediate and open levels of play for singles and doubles net, format to be determined by number of entries. Entrance fee is free, but there may be a collection made for food, and/or for an after tourney awards ceremony/ meal at a nearby restaurant. Competitors should let us know in advance if they are coming, and the day's competition must start at 9, given the shortened daylight hours. All FREESTYLERS- this is the perfect opportunity to try the game you know you have all wanted to try, but had more fun kicking in your closets. Please come. Or better yet come saturday, and we'll shred all day the 1st, then stay for the 2nd and hit a bag that ain't soft. Also, please note, that I still do consider myself a freestyler, so the above potential rudeness IS A JOKE. Even though I would love to see you all there playing net. Contact Chris Seibert at 703-503-0441 for directions to the site, and if you can't get him, Jeff Bowling at jbowling@deans.umd.edu, 301-495-0955 and Vince Bradley ('that's him. the obnoxious one with the long hair.') at rvbpaco@wam.umd.edu, 301-406-5219 (pager) will do their best to help you out as well. until next time- rVb
