Date: Tuesday, December 23, 1997 (with follow-up sessions Dec. 27-28) Location: Old Post Office Pavilion (on the stage in the food court!) Just off the "Mall" in Washington, D.C. Times: 2 - 6:30 p.m. Contact: Vince Bradley E-mail: rvbpaco@wam.umd.edu Home: 301-422-8738 Work: 301-405-8314 Pager: 301-406-5219 ----------------------- If you live within driving distance of D.C., or if you plan to be out that way at Christmastime, please join us for a freestyle gathering on the Tuesday before Christmas, December 23rd. The Juggling Capitol (a juggling store inside the Old Post Office Pavilion) is sponsoring this second annual shred-fest inside the shopping mall. We have the stage reserved from 2-6pm, and we plan to start as close to 2 as we can; so if you're coming, try to get there early! If it's anything like last year, we'll have a big Christmas tree taking up part of the stage, so space will be limited to about 10-14 players at a time. Confirmed attendees are: myself, Vince Bradley, Peter Irish, Justin Sexton, Neil Payne, Josh Penney, Dan Kramer, and many of the local players in the D.C. area. Possible attendees include the Penn gang, the invisible Ernest Crvich, Noah Dubreuil, and others. If you can't make it on the Tuesday before Christmas, how about the weekend after? That's right, the stage is also reserved for Saturday and Sunday, December 27-28! Times and location are the same, though several people (namely myself and Justin Sexton) will not be able to make that date. For the latest information, see http://www.footbag.org/events as the time draws near, or e-mail Vince Bradley . I am sure many of you were aware that changes were afoot. :-) Recently, Mattel Sports, the division of Mattel that includes the Hacky Sack and Frisbee products, was bought by an investment group, called BMC (Brown, McMillan, and Cookson). Mattel (the parent company) has divested itself of all of its sporting goods in this deal, and is getting back to toys (such as their biggest selling brand, Barbie). Michael Cookson is the Chairman of the new company. He founded Aviva, developmenting sporting goods in the late 1980s, built it into a 20 million dollar a year business, sold it to Mattel, then moved on to other pursuits. Mattel Sports was up for sale all summer, and lots and lots of investors bid on it. The deal with BMC was closed on November 24 (just a couple of weeks ago). The new company will be called Wham-O, Inc. The personnel at the new company are the core group who ran Mattel Sports. They have stated that they are committed to bringing back the inventiveness and leadership of the original Wham-O. Arthur Coddington, who ran sports promotions for Frisbee and Hacky Sack at Mattel Sports, will be overseeing all of Frisbee and Hacky Sack for Wham-O. Arthur's a top flying disc freestyler - 1996 and 1997 world champion. (He's pretty incompetent at footbag, though he loves to watch! He was in the audience at this year's Worlds finals in Portland, so he knows what's up.) Arthur believes Hacky Sack's move away from Mattel and to a smaller company with more of a sports focus will be very positive for Hacky Sack and footbag in general. A very important factor in Arthur's continuation with Mattel was Michael Cookson's belief that Hacky Sack was a sporting good and not a toy as Mattel had believed. Because the deal has just closed, details are still somewhat unclear, but Arthur and Wham-O have told everyone they are committed to supporting the growth of footbag sports. In addition to Hacky Sack's partnership with the WFA and its unbroken record of Worlds sponsorships, Wham-O will be doing other footbag-related promotions in the summer of 1998. The hope is to incorporate as many disc and footbag demos into the mix as possible. Also, for those of you running regional tournaments, the regionals sponsorship looks like it will be back again this year! If you have any questions, feel free to write me (though I told you pretty much what I know so far). I wanted to let you know about the latest media coverage of footbag: a Bay Area internet publication called "Bay Insider" is running a story on BAFL and footbag in general! It's a pretty nice article, and includes an awesome photo and a link to a recent video of Ryan Mulroney (courtesy Sean Wingert). The story just appeared today! Check it out: http://www.bayinsider.com/getout/recleagues/97/12/footbag15.html The main page (http://www.bayinsider.com) also has a short blurb, with the great photo of Sebastien Verdy. I'm happy with the story (although we have the requisite comments about dead heads and patchouli oil :-(.. what can we do..).
