The Texas State Championships was a great success thanks to all the players and the great weather. Arizona came out in force and dominated the net events. Also traveling South were Simon Hearsey from Seattle and from California Big Add Chad and Steve Goldberg. Teva Dave came down from Colorado with Austin native and Colorado transplant - Eli Piltz - to round out the excellent freestyle showing. We had approximately 25 competitors which made the tournament highly manageable and casual. What was lacking in quantity was more than made up by the quality of the players and the play. Thanks to all the players who made the trip from near and far away. Thanks also to our sponsors (Redman Footbags, Flying Clipper footbags and the Dallas Footbag Clubs). We paid a little over $600.00 in prize money and had lots of footbags for prizes. Finally, thanks to all the players that once again took over and helped as they have in past years -- James Harley - brackets and net lines, Dave Spears - tables and chairs, James Roberts - ran golf and Freestyle (thanks Steve G. and Teva Dave for being our judges); Kelly for helping with shirts, and the Dallas Footbag Club for their nets, golf holes and general positive attitude!! (I'll blame it on influence from my good friend Vince ;-) heh, heh, heh...) The 1998 (inaugural) Rebel Alliance Footbag Open was a good time. It was mainly a locals tourney for the DC Allstars with about 15 total competitors but a few people (4) came in from out of town to make it special. On the first day, we had 9 net competitors (5 open, 4 amateur) vying for the esteemed light saber. We also had a good time playing some informal doubles, ~partnering open and amateur players together for some skill sharing. In the singles competition, the day ended with 2 old friends taking the match to 3 games with plenty of spikes, digs, bashes, a couple of service poaches and even a good old 'shank to win'. I love watching open net matches... Open Net 1) Jason 'Han' Langis, MD 2) Vince 'Obi One' Bradley, MD 3) Jeff 'Luke' Bowling, MD *Honorable Mention) Anthony 'Aintno' Intemann, NJ/PA The second day was for freestyle. There were seven of us doing mainly circle shredding (what it's all about). To give us a more realistic tournament feel, Josh put on a nice demo routine. After about 5 hours it was clear that the duel for the light saber was going to be between Peter and either Josh or Vince. Josh, with a nasty paradox leg-beater stepped up to challenge Peter to a game of Force. Modeled after the basketball game 'horse', each player took turns putting together a string of 3 moves that their opponent would have two chances to complete and then add a trick. Then vice versa until a competitor couldn't complete the string in which case they received a letter. It was an even match until each player had F, O and R. From there, Peter went on in style to win the saber. As Josh mentioned, the executioner was hitting some big tricks that day, one thread included blurry whirl, to big apple, to paradox whirl. ...My eyes were having trouble keeping up with all of the double and triple dexterity moves being hit. 1) Peter 'Executioner' Irish, MD 2) Josh 'BMP' Penney, NY 3) Vince 'Obi One' Bradley, MD *Honorable Mention) Matt '14?!?' Avery, VA *Overall Jedi Master Award) Vince 'Obi One' Bradley, MD Thanks a lot to everyone who came and to Steve G. for keeping us all in touch and everything else. I hope to see you all soon. Take care, Neil Payne DC p.s. there will be another 'East Must Jam' freestyle gathering in the DC area during the holiday season, most likely in late December. An announcement will be made. I wanted to remind you that as this calendar year starts to come to a close, it's time to start planning your footbag events for next year! Those of you who are tournament directors or who are hoping to organize a footbag event in your area, please go ahead now and stake your claim on a date for '99! (This applies to the rest of this year, as well.) To add yourself to the footbag calendar, simply go to http://www.footbag.org/add-event.html and fill in the fields. It couldn't be easier -- and thousands of footbaggers will see your listing withing days. (This is a lot easier and cheaper than mailing out flyers, though I recommend you still do that for your loyal base of players as the time draws near.) Don't worry if you aren't yet sure of the exact dates or location for your event -- go ahead and put your event down so people will know it's happening. You can send an announcement to this mailing list when you finalize the details and want everyone to know. You can also update your event listing on the website at any time with the password you define when you create the listing using the above address. To set the date to be "TBD" (to-be-determined), just fill in the month, but leave the dates as 0's (that's the numeral 0, not the letter O). Thanks. Steve
