I just got back from being overseas where I did not have internet connectivity, and of course in my absense (as my wonderful luck would have it) things fell apart. I am now in LA for the So-Cal tourney, and don't want to spend my weekend trying to fix the list, so please, for now, assume the footbag list is unavailable and do not post to any of the lists @footbag.org until you hear from me. (If you post, you will just create more work for me.) I will let everyone know as soon as the list is back up. Also, please don't fear -- if you've posted a message to a footbag list before today and you have not seen it come back to you, I will most likely be able to recover it and repost it for you if and when I ever get the lists up again. So please, whatever you do, don't repost the same message until you see whether or not it comes back to you when the flood gates open. I can't put a time on the fix -- it could take a few hours or a few days. I'll tentatively say it will be working again by Tuesday afternoon, and if it starts working sooner, then that'll be a bonus. There were also major problems with the website, and those have all now been resolved, so those of you who have had troubles with the website at http://www.footbag.org/ should be able to try again now and have better luck. If your club or even updates didn't go through, you'll need to redo them (but don't resubmit "new club" requests -- I'll process those later this week or next). I don't know why I even thought I could get away for a week and not pay dearly. :-) Steve From owner-announce@footbag.org Tue Apr 13 06:21:45 1999 Received: (from majordom@localhost) by eniac.yak.net (8.9.3/8.9.3) id GAA15100 for FBannounce-outgoing@eniac.yak.net; Tue, 13 Apr 1999 06:21:45 GMT X-Authentication-Warning: eniac.yak.net: majordom set sender to owner-announce@footbag.org using -f Received: from Market.NET (Market.NET [140.174.206.2]) by eniac.yak.net (8.9.3/8.9.3) with ESMTP id GAA15097 for ; Tue, 13 Apr 1999 06:21:44 GMT Received: from spectre.atext.com (spectre.atext.com [204.62.245.27]) by Market.NET (8.8.7/8.8.5) with ESMTP id XAA09678 for ; Mon, 12 Apr 1999 23:23:43 -0700 Received: from [216.111.252.67] (dhcp216-111-252-67 [216.111.252.67]) by spectre.atext.com (8.9.3/8.9.3) with ESMTP id XAA09311 for ; Mon, 12 Apr 1999 23:22:55 -0700 (PDT) Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" ; format="flowed" X-Sender: brat@market.net (Unverified) Message-Id: Date: Mon, 12 Apr 1999 23:25:13 -0700 To: announce@footbag.org From: Steve Goldberg Subject: [announce] Footbag lists back up (maybe) Sender: owner-announce@footbag.org Footbag aficionados and friends, I am tentatively hopeful that the footbag e-mail discussion lists are working again. Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Sender: owner-announce@footbag.org Hello all. I wanted to throw out one last reminder about the upcoming 1999 Southern Regional Footbag Championships. It is this weekend (Apr 24-25) just north of Dallas, TX. See http://www.footbag.org/events/ Just like last year, the tournament is being held in conjunction with the Wildflower! Arts and Music Festival held annually in Richardson, TX (just north of Dallas). This festival brings about 50,000 spectators over the course of the weekend to hear live bands and watch inline skating, BMX (I think that is what you call the bikes on ramps), and footbag! PRIZE MONEY!!! Yes, we have right at $1000 prize money for this year's tournament. Prize money events are open only: singles freestyle, singles net, doubles net, women's singles net, women's doubles net, mixed doubles net, and golf. ****ALL of the prize money won by members of the Dallas Footbag Club will be thrown back into the prize purse**** We will also have a novice division free to first time competitors, and an intermediate divison. For a modest entry fee of $20 + $5 per open prize money event, you will get an event Tshirt featuring artwork by Kung Fu Kyle Crawford and music donated by a local radio station. Also available are the new issues of Kickers Quarterly and a limited number of Redman player's packs. Net players should love the professionally manicured lawn near one of the entrances to the festival. Freestylers will be glad to hear that we have a nice covered area reserved for competition. For all you golfers out there... we have a great course around a nearby park. I'll see everyone in Dallas. If you have any questions or concerns, write to me derric@dallasfootbag.org Also, check out our web site http://www.dallasfootbag.org for details. Don't forget the informal warm up jam at the tournament site Friday from 4-8pm. If you want a flier mailed to you, let me know quickly and I'll put it in the mail today. The 1st Annual Kickers Quarterly National Freestyle Championships has been successfully completed... March 28-29, '99. Special thanks to our sponsors, Rainbow Imports (Dirtbag), Rampage Sports, Mt. Prospect Park District and Kickers Quarterly Footbagazine! You can't get a better site for freestyle than RecPlex in Mt. Prospect, with a full basketball court on Saturday, and a specially built for aerobics "bouncy" floor on Sunday. We held Novice, Intermediate and Pro events over the span of the weekend. Nothing but freestyle! We welcomed Sebastien and Danny who came all the way from Montreal on a Grayhound (5 bus switches), and Devon from New York (who drove right past Philly to make it here). Also new players from Indianapolis and many locals as well. The most missing presences were Frank Gutowski and the downstate crew, as well as the Madison Wisconsin footbag club (you guys missed out big-time). Everyone will be back for more fun next year. Thanks to everyone for making this prototype event a success. For Pro's we ran, for the first time ever in Chicago, the "worlds style" of freestyle scoring as our primary event. We found that, with the new scorecards, a little training and some patience... we can accurately score the pro event, even with a limited number of judges. In a pinch, certain categories can be "skipped" during live judging and video-verified after the event is over... hey don't knock it, it worked. Worlds Style Scoring System: 1st Scott Davidson 2nd Greg Nelson 3rd James Widman Pro's also competed in three shred events on Sunday, and did a demonstration of the Compulsory Deductive system as an exhibition. The three shred events were: Phat Tricks Contest (3 rounds, 1 Phat Trick per round, base Add values used, 15 seconds): 1st Scott Davidson (Blurry Whirl, Mobius, LocoMotion) 5 + 5 + 6 = 16 total 2nd Greg Nelson (Paradox Blender, Mobius, Paradox Torque) 4 + 5 + 5 = 14 total 3rd James Widman (Blur, Fog, Blurry Whirl) 4 + 4 + 5 = 13 total Phat Strings Contest (2 rounds, 4 tricks per Phat String, base Add values used, 30 sec.): 1st Scott Davidson (Blurry Whirl, Symposium Paradox Whirl, Spinning Butterfly, Paradox Whirl) (18) (Paradox Torque, Paradox Whirl, Paradox Whirl, Barfly) (17) Total: 35 2nd Mike Bellman (Ripwalk, Paradox Mirage, Paradon, Blur) (11) (Riwalk, Paradox Mirage, Paradon, Swerve) (15) Total: 26 3rd Greg Nelson (Ripwalk, Spinning Osis, Torque,Paradox Blender) - (17) (Mobius, Paradox Blender, Torque, Paradox Whirl) - Mobius only completed (5) Total: 22. Most Unique Moves in Longest String in 1 Minute 1st Greg Nelson 2nd Scott Davidson 3rd James Whidman We learned a few things about the Phat Tricks Contest... that we need to come up with a good way to decide ties, we need to be firm about players submitting their tricks at the latest, an hour before the event (that submitting tricks in advance is a good idea)... otherwise, it was a great event, the players, spectators and "judge" agree, its a keeper! We learned a few things about the Phat Strings Contest...that we need to be firm about players submitting their strings prior to the event, and that submitting strings in advance is a good idea. Both Phat contests moved quickly, with each event taking less than a half hour, with no time between competitors... we all liked the Phat contests! Novice Freestyle 1st Matt (Please respond to the freestyle listserv with your last name) 2nd Devon (Please respond to the freestyle listserv with your last name) Intermediate Freestyle (Ranked Component): 1st Alex (Zeke) Ibardaloza 2nd Sebastien Duchesne 3rd Ian Dubman Intermediate Freestyle Shred (Most Unique Moves in Longest String in 1 Minute): 1st Sebastien Duchesne 2nd John Nagela 3rd Ian Dubman Intermediate Freestyle Shred (Phat Trick Contest): 1st Ian Dubman (Leg Beater, Stepping Butterfly, Paradox Blender) 2nd Sebastien Duchesne (Symposium Mirage, Spinning Eclipse) 3rd John Nagela (Fairy Butterfly) The rules for the Compulsory Deductive system that we demonstrated are: 10 points total possible, points breakdown is as follows: 1 point for each of three Proposed Phat Strings (PPS) [in the future, players will be required to submit the PPS strings in advance], 5 contacts each, .2 deduction for each missed trick in PPS's. (Total three points possible) 1 point for "actual" add ratio (actual result of PPS's, not the proposed ratio) in the following method: Full point, no deduction for ratio's over 4.5... .5 Deduction for 3.5 to 4.5 ratio... Full point deduction for ratio below 3.5. 3 points towards Presentation issues as follows: (Not yet determined) 1.5 points towards Fliers, Spins and Unusuals (not including PPS's): .1 deduction for each unique "Flier" contact under 5 (i.e. 5 unique fliers are required, max deduction is .5) .1 deduction for each unique "Spin" contact under 5 (i.e. 5 unique spins are required, max deduction is .5) .1 deduction for each unique "Unusual" contact under 5 (i.e. 5 unique unusuals are requried, max deducion is .5) 1.5 points towards Drops: .5 deduction for each drop, max deduction 1.5. Thats 10 points total. Easy to judge. A tasty event! Please scrutinize the rules on the Freestyle listserve. I apologize for the wait for results, there was uncertainty in one category. Thanks again for making a truly memorable event!
