The staff of the World Footbag Championships '99 Chicago is proud to announce our host hotel this year: The Hyatt Regency - McCormick Place, near the convention center. In order to guarantee that you get the super-low group room rate of $63 for a double (four people) or a king (two people), you need to call the number below and ask for reservations. When you are speaking to the reservations representative, you need to mention that you are getting a room for the "World Footbag Championships," for the nights between 7/11/99 and 7/18/99. The room rate is $63 plus tax. When you lump on the 14% tax, it comes to about $72 per night. They do charge extra for parking in the Hotel lot, but we are working on a nearby alternative for parking. While $72 a night might sound at first like a lot of money, remember that this is Chicago, and a typical night at the Hyatt is over $150. This is a Class-A hotel, and it is only about a year old. Very nice. Our group rate discount is significant. Reservations must be received before July 4th, 1999. Thereafter, reservations are taken on a space and rate availablity basis. Any reservation not guaranteed will not be held beyond 3 PM on the arrival day (be sure to "Guarantee" your reservation on a credit card if possible). If there are questions about your reservation, you should ask for Caryn Field, she is our Sales Contact with the Hyatt and is familiar with the contract. Call: Hyatt Regency - McCormick Place 2233 S. Martin Luther King Drive Chicago, IL 60616 312.567.1234 (Phone) 312.567.1270 (Fax) and Travel arrangements can be made through WLM World Travel. This agency has worked with footbaggers from Illinois many times before. Within the US and Canada they can be reached at (800) 545-8687. Anyone else should call (630) 990-2727, and mention World Footbag Championships and they will give you the prices normally reserved only for their friends and loved ones. They are sponsoring Worlds this year by giving a portion of their profits, so if you plan to fly, please make your travel arrangements through them. Further information about worlds, and the host hotel can be found at: http://www.footbag.org/worlds99/ The Hyatt's Regency - McCormick Place's web site is: http://www.hyatt.com/pages/c/chimpba.html Be sure to make reservations through the phone nunber listed above, not through the web site. The web site should be used for informational purposes only. Please note, that the Hyatt's web site does have links to area Attractions, Dining & Entertainment, Recreations, Weather and offers a virtual tour of the facility. We also encourage bikers and skaters to bring your gear along with you, as the Chicago Lakefront has many miles of beatiful bike paths and parks. Tell your friends! This is where the action will be! The 1999 Southern Regional Footbag Championships were held April 24-25 in conjunction with the Wildflower Arts and Music Festival in Richardson, TX (just north of Dallas). The tournament was held at one of the main entrances to an annual festival which also included inline skating, bikes on ramps, skateboarding, live music on five different stages, food and drink, more crafts and art than you could ever hope to see in one weekend, and 50,000+ spectators. So, with this awe inspiring site, where were all of the competitors? Don't get me wrong... we had quality competitors. I just hope that next year, we will also have quantity. There were a total of only 19 open and intermediate competitors. In a way this was good because we had the time to target spectators and spread the word. There were a total of 10 novice competitors that just happened to see us and wanted to learn. Since the tournament, we have had several newbies show up at our regular kick times with an obvious desire to learn. Because of this, I would say that the tournament was a complete success despite the low turnout. **If anyone is interested in competing in a highly visible area to promote the sport of footbag, this event is the place for you*** Next year, we will have the same site as part of a large festival that attracts people from all over. I expect no less than 50 competitors at the 2000 Southern Regionals. That includes everyone that I have ever written to on this mailing list. NO EXCUSES! As the pasta dinner started at Dennis and Becca's on Friday night the rain was just wrapping up its business. The next drop of rain to fall on Eugene was after the last good bye Sunday evening. Seven years I have been directing footbag tournaments and this is the first time the rain gave a tournament the right-of-way. Guffaws and sunny smiles spread across the Education Field at U of O, as forty legs soaked up rays and sent footbags flying. Tournament Directors Kendall KIC and Becca English-Ross wondered what happened to the gaggle of West Coast footbag players who usually show up to slosh about in the rain. Your name may have been mentioned, but your presence was not mourned because nothing was available to dampen the playful spirits leaping about campus. Most of the information you need is on the website, via http://www.footbag.org/events/ Some extra information is below: TRAVEL: we have far too many players to try to arrange airport pick-ups and the like, so please try to work this out on your own. There are several forms of public transportation available in the bay area, and you can usually get information at the airport ground transportation information booth. Shuttles are relatively cheap ($15?) and can take you door-to-door without a reservation. FRIDAY: if you arrive during the day Friday, come to the site (Wilbur Field on Stanford University campus, 30 minutes south of the San Francisco Airport) -- directions are on the website at http://www.footbag.org/events/ and you can get a map by going to http://www.mapblast.com/ . There will be pick-up net and freestyle all afternoon starting at around 2pm. Then, the pre-registration and player party is only a few miles away from there, starting around 6:30pm. REGISTRATION: this year we are not offering mail-in registrations, so if you're feeling like you are late, you're not! That siad, you must register by 9am Saturday (unless you're only playing freestyle, at which point you have until 5pm Saturday). There are two ways to register -- SHOW UP at the pre-registration party BEFORE 11pm on Friday, at Brent and Jody Welch's house (2540 Dell Ave., Mountain View, CA, 650-968-6846), or register ON SITE at 8:30am on Saturday. If you cannot make it to Friday night or Saturday a.m. registration opportunities, you will not be allowed to register (unless you are only playing freestyle). So, please find someone (not me) to register for you in that case. You will be required to sign in when you get to the site, however, and pick up your player pack and sign the waiver. No exceptions. No player-pack pickup by anyone but the registrant. LODGING: as usual, lodging is catch-as-catch-can. If you have money, we recommend you get a hotel. There is no single host hotel; it all depends on your budget and how far you want to be from the site. I strongly recommend calling Oaks Travel to find a local hotel, or using the internet. The number for Oaks Travel is on the Western Regionals event page at http://www.footbag.org/events . If your budget doesn't allow you to stay at a hotel, that's fine. But bring your sleeping bag and a towel, because it's just floorspace at this point. Come to the pre-registration party before 10pm and let one of our staff know you need a place to stay, and we will try to find you someplace. Staff members will be leaving the Welches' around 10 to go home, and will be taking people with them as needed. So please be there before 10. If you cannot do this, I don't know what to tell you, except good luck. :-) Please do not assume you can stay at the Welches if you arrive late. They are pretty much full up at this point. For all other information, please consult the web page. E-mail me only if you have a question after reading all of the above and the web page. Thanks. This weekend will be a blast -- I hope to see a lot of you at Stanford! Steve
