The Emerald City Open tournament site *has changed*!!! It will still be this coming weekend (June 12th & 13th), but the tournament will now be held at: Green Lake Playing Fields 7201 E Green Lake Drive N, Seattle, WA 98115 Next to the community center at NE Ravenna Blvd. & E Green Lake Drive N North of Albertsons Due to some "last minute adjustments", this year's tournament will be pretty low-key. There will be some prizes thanks to Flying Clipper and our hoard of goodies from previous tournaments, no shirts, no airline tickets, no pizza, not as great of (but decent) turf, but definitely more spectators, lots of places to eat, close bathrooms, showers, and water. It will be great fun! Driving Directions: From North of downtown Seattle: Take I-5 South to 80th Street exit. Turn right on 80th. Turn left on Wallingford, and turn left at the first light. Follow the lake until you come to Gregg's Greenlake Cycle and a 5 way intersection, and find street parking. The tournament is in the athletic fields across the street from Albertsons and Gregg's Greenlake Cycle. From South of downtown Seattle: Take I-5 North to the 65th Street/Ravenna exit. Turn left onto Ravenna (across the greenbelt). Continue until you get to E Greenlake Drive N, and find street parking. The tournament is in the athletic fields across the street from Albertsons and Gregg's Greenlake Cycle. To: announce@footbag.org MIME-Version: 1.0 Sender: owner-announce@footbag.org The time for the World Footbag Championships is drawing near, and we're very excited as our final arrangements are coming together. As you have probably seen if you've been to the Worlds website , we have a great host hotel in the heart of Chicago, and have recently finalized our freestyle finals site at the largest shopping mall in Chicago. We get a center stage in a highly-trafficked area of the mall, fully enclosed and with good lighting. Please read all the details in the message below if you plan to attend this year's event. There are some important upcoming deadlines you need to meet in order to avoid hassles and extra charges (for both hotel reservations and tournament registration fees). ----------------------------------------------------------------------- REGISTRATION DEADLINE ** JUNE 21 **: ----------------------------------------------------------------------- I want to make sure everyone realizes that the registration deadline is fast approaching. Basically, you have **just over a week** to send in your pre-registration (if you are in a foreign country, including Canada, you need to allow an extra week, which means you must send in your registration by this Monday!). However, please don't fear -- this year we have a new *online* ordering system for those of you with credit cards, so you can register instantly online. However, note that the registration deadline for that system is the same as the US mail-in deadline: ** June 21, 1999 **. Be sure to pre-register by June 21st to guarantee yourself a shirt as a part of the entry fee...and also to avoid that late penalty fee of $10. Late entrants will be assessed the late fee, and will have to pay separately for their event shirt, if they want one). International competitors should pre-register by June 14th (unless via the online system using a credit card) and send payment in the form of International Money order. The same late penalties apply to you too. You can print out or view the registration form online at: http://www.footbag.org/worlds99/img/register.pdf Or use the online credit-card-based registration system at: https://events.activeusa.com/reg/index.cfm?Ven_ID=IFL&E_ID=22933 Please note: on the registration form it lists an event---the 10-minute timed doubles consecs. This event is a demonstration event only, and will not be figured into overall standings. There is also no $5 entry for the event, either. The other consecutive events are still being offered and will be computed as part of the overall as in previous years. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- FREESTYLE FINALS AT NAVY PIER: ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Saturday, July 17th 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm Navy Pier -- Main Entrance Navy Pier is the premier retail and entertainment complex in Chicago, and it is truly our world class landmark. The Pier will be having fireworks after freestyle finals, at about 9:30, and the Pier draws about 100,000 people on a typical Saturday evening in July. Our site is smack dab in the middle of the main entrance of the pier, so it will be standing room only, packed house, guaranteed mega-spectators. This is by far, the best venue ever in the history of the sport for a Worlds Freestyle Finals! We are very excited about this site. Navy Pier features plenty of entertainment (other than footbag), including a Family Pavilion, Chicago's Children's Museum, an IMAX large screen theatre, unique retail shops, fine dining, casual indoor restaurants and seasonal outdoor cafes. It boasts a large Ferris Wheel and beautiful carousel, along with Crystal Gardens indoor park and botanical attraction. Don't forget the Skyline Stage outdoor performance pavillion (big name bands play there). ----------------------------------------------------------------------- NET FINALS AT MAYOR'S CUP: ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Mayors Cup Soccer Tournament and Festival Saturday and Sunday, July 17th and 18th >From 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Saturday and 'til 5:00 on Sunday. With 4,000 competitors, 10,000 parents and another 20,000 spectators at the Mayors Cup, this should be a great venue for net finals. This site is directly on the lakefront, approximately 100 feet from the lake, so be prepared for a bit of wind, and a great view of our city's skyline. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- HOTEL RESERVATIONS (***DEADLINE July 3rd ***): ----------------------------------------------------------------------- So here's the deal... reserve your room at the Hyatt McCormick for $63 a night (do it by July 3rd, though, otherwise you could miss out on a great bargain. We're talkin' probably at least $100 savings!!) More detail about the hotel (including a map, photo, and link to the hotel's website) is available at: http://www.footbag.org/worlds99/docs/travel.html You can call the Hyatt reservations line at (800) 233-1234. Be sure to tell them you want to stay at the Hyatt McCormick Place in Chicago, and that you have a special rate with the '99 World Footbag Championships. Or you can reserve online at the Hyatt McCormick website (follow the link from the footbag.org page above). The dates most people will want to reserve for are Sunday night, July 11, through Sunday, July 18 (or Monday, July 19, depending on your travel plans). Remember, everyone must arrive on site by Monday morning, July 12, to check in. (If you can't check in for yourself, you must get someone to check in for you. We will not do check-in or late registration after Monday's registration closes.) --- So, pack the family, all your friends and willing relatives into the family truckster and make your way to Chicago for the 2nd week of July. Pack your kickin' shoes, a toothbrush and deodorant, (especially the deodorant) and get your butts in gear. Worlds '99 Chicago will be the worlds you'll be telling your grandchildren about! If you have any questions or problems, please don't hesitate to write me or contact us (all the contact information is below). Please save this message and refer to it as you prepare for the Worlds, and keep checking the website for updates. --- Again, we strongly urge you to come to the 1999 World Footbag Championships. This is the beginning of the exposure that we're looking for. Don't miss it! In the last post, it stated you could register with the hotel online through their web site. Well, actually, the online hotel registration doesn't work for our special deal. Call the hotel directly and register by telephone at this number: Hyatt McCormick (800) 233-1234 Also, it has been brought to my attention that a few people were having problems with hotel rates, if they were attempting to book rooms for nights outside of our event. If you are arriving early or staying later, you will need to contact our hotel liaison directly, and tell her you're associated with the World Footbag Championships, and what days you would like. It doesn't sound like a problem if people want to do this, but they must contact her directly and give her the scoop. Her name and number is..... Caryn Field, Hyatt McCormick (312) 528-4181 If anyone runs into problems with this, please let us know. Also, some people have run into a couple of problems with the on-line registration form. First, you were only allowed to choose 1 radio button per category, therefore only allowing a person to only register for one event, either singles, doubles, or mixed. Second, if you didn't have a partner for the doubles events, it wouldn't let you register without registering a partner, too. These problems should now be corrected, so if anyone runs into these or others, let us know A.S.A.P. Remember -- the deadline for registration is upon us! Please register immediately. Thanks again, and we apologize for any inconvenience. For more information, contact us at: (630) 668-6876 (888) 255-4576 http://www.footbag.org/worlds99/ mailto:worlds@footbag.org Thank you. I just wanted everyone to know that, if the website dies or if the list stops working, please be patient. I will get back online when I get to Germany and will try to check in and get things running smoothly. Too many error reports will just fill my inbox, so please only write me to complain about obscure errors. (Obvious errors like "the home page doesn't load" don't need reporting. :-)) The e-mail lists are constantly bombarded by spam and junk mail. While I have many automated controls in place, the safest thing for me to do is to hold all posts until I arrive and can get back online. So please go ahead and post as usual, but don't expect your messages to show up until tomorrow morning. See you. Steve P.S. REMEMBER -- the DEADLINE for registration for Worlds is this Monday! Approximate order of events see www.move.to/footbag Comments: We are very happy to see so many people coming from all over the world. We have given our best with the organization, this being our first hosted event. So please have some patience if everything does not work as smoothly as it should. We would like to thank all the people from around the world who made this possible: -Justin Sexton and the Finnish Footbag Association (He got us hooked!) -Erwin Horjus and Footbag Amsterdam (Homepage) -Bjarne EEverberg and the Danish Footbag Ass.(Net Ruling and Advice) -Steve Goldberg and footbag.org (contacts, advice, for doing a great job) -All the players that are coming and are up for a good time!!! Cross your fingers that the weather is fine!!! Finally: As some of you already know, we've had great problems finding sponsors for this event. So far we're paying most of the stuff out of our own pocket. But this does not really concern you players. What does concern you though is the following: While in search of sponsors a contact was made for us to the chief executive in charge of footbag for Wham-o Germany (or Sunflex Sports). As some of you might know Wham-o released a world wide footbag collection and are trying to establish markets all over the world. The guy was very interested in our work and sayd something about using this event for promotional purposes i.e. shooting videos for ad footage, etc. The guy has our number (we unfortunately don't have his) and he knows its happening. BUT HE HAS NOT CONTACTED US SO FAR, OFFERING SUPPORT. We now fear that he might want to use the event anyway, either by trying to film or take pictures or by drafting some of the better players after or during competition. We have absolutely nothing against a player working with this company and making a profit for themselves. But please, should a guy from Wham-o (Sunflex Sports) contact you during the event please keep in mind the rest of the comunity and contact one of the event organizers. We are really quite upset with the companies' way of doing business. Thank You! Hope to see you all on Friday, Saturday or Sunday! Jan Zimmermann and FC Footstar Berlin e.V. We've already got around 75 people pre-registered. (That's some sort of 'Worlds' record, I think.) This is the first of several announcements we'll be sending out over the next week to make sure you have all the information you need before the event. Also, please be sure to check the Worlds website frequently for updates: http://www.footbag.org/worlds99/ So anyway, I just wanted to pass along some information about airport shuttles to and from our host hotel, the Hyatt McCormick. There are shuttles that run non-stop from Hyatt to both major airports in Chicago. The name of the shuttle is 'Continental Express'. These are large passenger vans. If you're flying into Midway, the pick up for 'Continental Express' is outside of the 'Southwest Airlines' terminal. If you're flying into Ohare, there are pick-ups at every terminal. The fee from Ohare is approx. $16 for a one-way trip from the airport to the hotel. The fee from Midway is cheaper, and you can purchase a round-trip ticket for a discounted price. ($16 ain't bad, considering the cost of a taxi). Make sure you tell them 'Hyatt McCormick', as there are many 'Hyatts' in the Chicago area. As far as other shuttles go, there is a daily hotel shuttle that makes a loop around the city to various locations. Depending on the surrounding events and activities, it's route changes on a daily basis, so you'll have to call the front desk once you're here to get the specific times and destinations. One day that has already slipped by us is the mail-in pre-registration day. So....It's already too late to pre-register by mail, BUT....since the online registration system is practically instantaneous, you still have until July 3rd to register through the online system! (We needed to receive all registrations by July 3rd, which is why we set the mail-in deadline to be this week. But since the online system is much faster than US mail, you still have until July 3rd to use that system to register and avoid a $10 late fee. After that, it's only late registration for all the slackers and procrastinators. And that means a $10 penalty fee, plus you won't receive the free Worlds T-shirt in your players' packs. (And yes, you'll be forced to buy one.) While I'm on the subject of the on-line registration, so far it's been a big success. We've already had about 50 people use the on-line format to register, and it's gone by fairly smoothly. As I think we've taken care of all the bugs on the form (ie, being able to register for everything), we're receiving a few bugs on the charge amounts. To specify, one individual registered for all the events under the 'Open' category, but was only charged the base $70 'pro' fee, and wasn't charged the additional $5 per event fee. This hasn't been a huge problem, but be aware that when you check in on Monday morning at the registration booth, as they hand you your registration form to verify all the correct information, you may end up being charged an additional fee that wasn't originally charged to you in the first place. Keep in mind this isn't any additional fee, but just correcting the amount you originally weren't charged enough for. Similarly, at the Monday check-in you may choose to add or remove events, which may also change your entry fee, at which point you may get a refund or have more to pay. NOTE that we will only give refunds on Monday -- so if you cannot check in, you MUST have someone do this for you or else you forfeit the right to get a refund or change any of the events for which you pre-registered. Just wanted everyone that's coming to Worlds this year in Chicago to keep in mind that it HOT here! Typical July temperature lately in Chicago is around 95 degrees with insane amounts of humidity. Be prepared to drink a ton of water. My first Worlds was in 1995 in San Francisco. I remember it got to 100 degrees one day there. Everyone had a tough time dealing with the weather, but there wasn't even any humidity! Chicago COULD BE WORSE! BE PREPARED!! The good news is that all of our sites are near Lake Michigan, and it's always cooler by the lake. (Plus, if you overheat, you can always just peel off your clothes and jump in. Just make sure you give me a chance to hook up the video recorder first if you plan to take it all off. I'm making millions on my homemade amatuer porn.) Unfortunately, July is also one of the rainer months in Chicago, though we will not let rain stop the tournament. Again, if you have any other questions pertaining to worlds you can mail to , visit our website at , or call at 888-255-4576. Looking forward to seeing all of you soon! Scot Hansen
