As we enter the homestretch, a lot of details will be finalized, and you can expect to see at least one major announcement before the end of this week with as many of the details as possible. For that reason, I strongly recommend everyone check their e-mail before they leave for the Worlds. I and the rest of the Worlds committee will be sending at least one more major announcement, hopefully tonight (Wednesday night), else tomorrow morning (Thursday) at the latest. http://www.footbag.org/worlds99/ (Final update by *Thursday*) The Worlds Website *will be final* at the time of that announcement. THIS IS IMPORTANT -- if you have previously gone to the Worlds website, I *strongly* recommend you return on Thursday to re-read it and PRINT OUT the Worlds information pages if you can. But please watch your e-mail for the announcement which will coincide with the final updates to the site, so you know exactly when it is ready. If you go too soon, you may miss important changes. A lot has changed, and in addition to factual changes (yet to be implemented!), I have been making efforts to make the site more easily printable. Again, the *final* edits to the website will be reliable information and there *will be changes* from today's version. In case you're wondering why I'm mailing you this instead of just updating the website now, our mailing lists were down again today and yesterday and I spent pretty much my entire night last night and all night tonight getting it all fixed. So everything got shifted by a day and a half (including my day job). Yes, chalk it up to the other kind of hacker (again). My friend Strick has given us our own computer so we are no longer sharing fate with a bunch of other services (thereby hopefully lowering our susceptibility). Thanks, Strick. :-) Thanks for listening. Watch for the final announcements on e-mail and on the website no later than Thursday. The exact location will be published soon. The purpose of this announcement is threefold: (1) To inform the general public about this annual event, and to INVITE any member of the footbag community interested in the discussions that occur at this meeting to sit in and listen. The meeting is run following Roberts Rules of Order, so like any formal meeting, spectators are just that. (2) To call for submission of any RULE CHANGE proposals or other IFAB-related business between now and the start of the meeting. The agenda is set at the beginning of the meeting, and I or any IFAB member would be happy to represent your issues if you present them clearly beforehand. Since I'm overloaded as it is, I'd prefer if you could find another IFAB member to champion any proposals you have. You can find a list of current IFAB members at http://ifab.footbag.org/roster.html and the summary of procedures for submitting proposals is at http://ifab.footbag.org/bylaws.html (under the RULE CHANGES heading). (3) To call for NEW MEMBER nominations. The committee cannot function well if it does not have representation from the player community. This includes both regional representation (e.g., from countries outside the U.S., but also from different areas of the U.S.), representation from different age groups and sub-cultures, and representation from players of the various footbag sports. The guidelines for membership are described on the IFAB website at http://ifab.footbag.org/bylaws.html Please note that some of the language on the website and in the rulebook is indicative of a previous regime that was more slow-moving. There is no reason why you can't propose a rule change at the meeting itself, or be nominated and elected to sit on the board AT THE BEGINNING of next week's meeting. You simply must ask a committee member to add these things to the agenda before it is too late. New members can be elected and can sit on the board THIS YEAR. It is not too late. Thanks for listening, and I hope to see many of you next week. Steve P.S. This was not the official announcement about the Worlds website and final details. That's coming tonight (hopefully). Thanks again. On this Sunday, July 11th at 6:00 PM will be a freestyle jam at Navy Pier... just below the Skyline Stage where finals will be held just six days later. Come out and see Chicago's most popular tourist attraction (Navy Pier), see the shredders showing off to huge crowds, take some videotape, bring the kids to our famous Childrens Museum, meet up with old friends, make new ones, catch a movie at the Imax theatre, do some shopping, get some food. This is in the tradition of the Tam Tam jam of Montreal fame, and to facilitate the need of shredders to get together and play. Navy Pier is always free admission, so come on out and have some fun. We'll be kicking on the south side of the pier, near the Skyline Stage. We are also planning a Golf Jam during first round of golf on Monday evening, freestyling at the players party on Wednesday night, a possible Saturday late-night jam site and lots of exposure on Sunday of finals for net. More on these events to follow. See ya there! Worlds Planning Committee P.S. Stay tuned for final details on the event itself. Below is a summary of all the information I think you need. :-) Any questions, e-mail me directly and please cc: worlds@footbag.org . I may not have any time left between now and Sunday, and hopefully someone else can help you if you cc the worlds e-mail list. --------- Section I --------- Frequently-Asked Questions 1. I missed the July 3rd registration deadline. What now? Can I still register? You *can* register, but you can no longer *pre*-register. This means you *must not* send in a registration form by mail, nor use the online registration system. Both are now closed. The only way for you to register now is to appear at the prelims site (see schedule and directions below) on Monday between 8 and 11am at the registration/check-in booth. Bring your check book. 2. I don't have a partner yet. What do I do? Find one! :-) But seriously, show up at the net pick-up games this Sunday (see below), and/or look on the "need partner" list at the registration/check-in on Monday morning. You *must* indicate a partner by the close of the registration on Monday morning, or you cannot play whichever event you need a partner for! You might also want to use Chris Young's cool new tool: http://www.employees.org/~cyoung/fpart.cgi (Just double-click on the above link and add your info / pick a partner.) 3. I can't make it to the Monday check-in. What do I do? All players are required to check in. However, you *can* have someone check in for you! The only caveat -- we can't be responsible for mistakes on your registration (whether because of data entry errors by the pre-registration team or because of your own errors on the entry form) if you are not able to double-check your details at check-in. We will not be able to perform registration tasks after Monday morning. This includes distributing player packs. If you cannot be there on Monday morning, you must have someone pick your player pack up for you on Monday. In hardship cases, we can make exceptions, but you must let us know in advance by e-mailing worlds@footbag.org. 4. I am only playing freestyle. Do I have to check in on Monday? YES. All players must check in on Monday. See above (3), though -- you can have a friend check in for you. But you can't just show up to the freestyle competition. You must have someone check in for you, or make other arrangements, and you must attend the frestyle meeting on Tuesday night (5, below). 5. What is this "mandatory" freestyle meeting on Tuesday? And how do I know if I'm judging? And where is it? All freestyle players are required to attend the Tuesday night player's meeting. This is the only time we will explain all the details of the freestyle competition. There are a lot of competitors and if you do not attend this meeting, you will not be allowed to compete, as there are lots of details you need to know. You must be on time -- we will take roll and scratch any players not in attendance. There are no exceptions. All freestylers are required to judge. The way our system works, each player needs to be ready to judge, and is responsible for checking the judging assignments and being in the judging chair when called. Players are organized into pools, and each pool judges each other pool. So, in general, all players end up being both judges and players. The Tuesday night meeting is also a judging certification meeting -- those of you who know the system can obtain your certification quickly, while those of you needing more instruction can stay and get detailed instructions from the best players and judges. But over all, don't fear the judging system -- any given judge's role is actually relatively simple. I don't know in exactly which room freestyle player's meeting will be on Tuesday night, but this information will be available when you check in on Monday (another reason to have someone pick up your player pack for you). In addition, you can ask at the front desk of the host hotel (or check the schedule on the website; I'll update it as soon as I find out). 6. Will Worlds be on TV? No. Come and see it live. :-) Of course we are hoping for an expect the media to come out and take video for news and feature programs, but the event itself will not be televised. 7. Where are the various events taking place? How do I get from the hotel to the site(s)? Are they far? Do I need a car? Fortunately, the preliminary net and freestyle sites (which are the places you need to go all week before Saturday), are very near the host hotel. They are both at McCormick Place East -- the net site is in the field above an underground parking lot for McCormick Place East (see directions below). The exact location of the freestyle prelims (e.g., exactly *where* within McCormick Place East) will be announced at the player's meeting. I will also update the website as soon as I know the exact location. Either way, you don't need to drive (it's a 10-minute walk from the hotel). -- NOTE: directions are below, in section II. The finals sites (all day Saturday, Saturday night, and all day Sunday) are pretty far away and you will need to work out a way to get there. Full details will be in your player pack and at the player's meeting (see, you really don't want to miss that!). See http://www.footbag.org/worlds99/docs/map.html for a rough map of the site locations. There will be shuttle vans for the Wednesday night player party to and from the hotel. There is also a shuttle from the airport to the hotel (see the earlier post -- go to the player information page which has a link to that information, at http://www.footbag.org/worlds99/docs/schedule.html and click on "Airport Shuttles"). 8. What's going on this Sunday? Is it an official part of the event? This Sunday, July 11th, is a traditional pre-worlds kick at the prelim site. We expect folks to just show up and play net. It's not an official function of the tournament, but we encourage folks to meet, play, and find partners there. As PT Lovern said earlier, there is also a net training camp taking place starting at 10am on Sunday. This is an unofficial event, but we recommend you consider doing this to improve your game. Some of the best players in the sport will be coaching. Please don't ask us about it, though -- if you have questions, or want to register, contact PT Lovern at before Sunday, else show up at 10am (no later, or you won't be able to participate). Freestyle will probably be on the sidelines at McCormick Place during the day, and Scott Davidson has organized an evening shred at the freestyle finals site at 6pm on Sunday. Hang around the site and you'll likely find everyone and get hooked in. ---------- SECTION II ---------- Walking Directions to Prelim Sites - From Host Hotel to Net Prelims (McCormick Park South) : Note: the prelim net site is not officially named "McCormick Park South" -- we made that name up. That particular area of the park is unnamed -- it's actually the back yard of McCormick Place, and is above the underground parking garage, between McCormick and 31st Street. Walk from the Hyatt lobby past the elevators south, it jogs east past a snack shop with fresh coffee, then jogs south again and through the Networks (internet) Cafe/Restaurant. Follow the signs to "Lake Michigan". Go to the South side of Lakeside Center (the big black building), and you can't miss the nets. It's a 10-minute walk, unless you stop at Starbucks. :-) - From Host Hotel to Freestyle Prelims (McCormick Place East) : The freestyle prelim site is at McCormick Place East (also known as "Lakeside Center"). The exact location of the freestyle prelims will be explained in your player pack and/or at the freestyle players' meeting on Tuesday evening. Remember, freestylers are required to attend the players' meeting on Tuesday. See the schedule above for the exact time. ----------- SECTION III ----------- S-C-H-E-D-U-L-E (Tentative -- final schedule in players' pack at check-in) Sunday, July 11 10 - 4:00pm Net Training Camp McCormick Park South 1:00pm - 6:00pm Pick-Up Net Games 6:00pm - 10:00pm Freestyle Shred Navy Pier (Skyline Stage) Monday, July 12 8:00am Registration/Check-in McCormick Park South 12:00pm Opening Ceremonies/Players' Meeting 1:00pm Consecutives 4:30pm Golf - 1st round (Freestyle Jam @ Golf Site) Tuesday, July 13 7:30am Footbag golf (final round) McCormick Park South 11:00am Mixed doubles footbag net 11:00am Intermediate singles footbag net 6:30pm Mandatory Freestyle Players' Meeting Hyatt McCormick (judging certification) (room TBA) Wednesday, July 14 9:00am Singles footbag net McCormick Park South 8:00pm Group outing "Life's Too Short" (Elston & Division) Thursday, July 15 7:30-8:00am Footbag freestyle (check-in) McCormick Place East 8:30-4:30pm Footbag freestyle first round 6:00-9:30pm IFAB Meeting Hyatt McCormick Friday, July 16 9:00am Doubles footbag net McCormick Park South 3:00pm Footbag freestyle (second round) McCormick Place East Saturday, July 17 9:00am Net Semi-Finals Montrose Harbor (Cricket Hill) 4:00pm Footbag freestyle (final round) Navy Pier (Skyline Stage) Sunday, July 18 9:00am Net Finals Montrose Harbor (Cricket Hill) 7:30pm Closing awards ceremony and player party ------- ** FINALLY ** -- go to the Worlds website, print it out, and take it with you. A large passenger van will make round trips (10 minutes each way) between the Hyatt and the party site from 7:30 p.m. to 12:30 p.m. on the half hour. If you choose to drive, expect plenty of free parking at the party site! There is no cover charge to get in, and $1 off all drinks! Special menu that includes vegetarian items that aren't normally there! If you are hungry, order off the menu... if not, have some drinks and enjoy the company of your fellow footbaggers. Put some faces onto those email addresses that you see so often. Shred, eat and drink on two private decks (reserved for our party) overlooking the beautiful city skyline. Play pool inside, hang out near the steel drum band (not confirmed yet) or go down to the dock and sit in an eclectic chair by the water. Kayaking will be available before the party, get info at the registration tent. LOCATION: *LIFE'S TOO SHORT* - "Southern Florida Meets Cajun" Elston & Division on the near north side. Maps available at registration booth/scoring tent. Description of premises: Multi levels, on the North Branch of the Chicago River. Decorated themed facade throughout. It is one of only two restaurants directly on the river in Chicago. Separate Bar and Dining areas, upstairs and downstairs bar. Large deck upstairs with stairs leading to wrap around decks, all with a great view of the city skyline. Kicking encouraged. Outdoor shower. Pool table. The theme is "slow down" and they serve the dessert before the meal. This should be a lot of fun. If you have any questions Hope to see you there! The last week was a long one for the folks up here in Chicago. After taking a couple days off to recouperate, we are now working on updating the electronic files and will soon post complete results on this listserve. Thank you for your patience. I'd like to take this opprotunity to thank all the players and spectators that showed up last week for the event. The staff had a great time seeing old friends and meeting new ones. If you missed it; shame on you! All in all, Worlds 99 was a success. We wish we could have had a bigger prize purse, but we are confident that everyone that came had a good time and that the Chicago public was turned on to a sport that they were never aware of two weeks ago. Somehow I managed to crop, upload, title, and caption a bunch of photos taken on my digital camera from Worlds by myself and other guest photographers (most notably, Martin Cote). Please check them out. They may get moved around and there are definitely more photos I will add to it. If you have others you'd like to contribute, let me know. Go to http://www.footbag.org/results/ and click on the photo thumbnail for Worlds99, else go to http://www.footbag.org/photos/ and navigate in.
