Please welcome Brian Kimball as the new list administrator. His job is to approve new member requests and to handle all administration of the lists themselves. This will offload a lot of the burden from me of maintaining the footbag.org resources, since we now have over 800 members on these e-mail lists. I will continue to be the "moderator" for the freestyle discussion, and enforcing the list policies for postings to the lists in general. But if you have questions or problems with your subscription, please contact Brian at bfk@footbag.org. Thanks, Brian, and welcome to the team! Steve P.S. Every time I send an announcement, somebody writes me and asks how to get off the list. So here's the answer: Go to http://list.footbag.org/ or write Brian only if you can't get to the list website. State tourney this year. Fortunately, this is a very low-key event and has traditionally been a bit of a moveable feast anyway. So we moved it. The 1999 California State Footbag Championships will be October 23rd and 24th (as scheduled) in Golden Gate Park. The specific spot is called Peacock Meadow, but hardly anyone who doesn't kick knows that. Let me know if you need directions. http://www.footbag.org/events/ contains details. We'll be doing Open Singles, Doubles, and Mixed, Intermediate Singles and Doubles if there is enough interest, and Singles Open Freestyle, with maybe Intermediate and Shred, if that's what Eric decides to do. Net players: be there by 10:00 on both Saturday (singles) and Sunday (doubles and all finals). Frestylers: be there by 2:00 (slackers :-) for 3pm competition. Contact Eric Wulff for details of freestyle -- he will be directing that event. His e-mail is ewulff@jsishipping.com Please bring a water container and bring food; the park is not terribly close to civilization. But in all honesty, one Lex Wenberg of Santa Fe, 17 years old, deserves a pat on the back. The ordinance still needs to be changed, but it seems like things are moving in the right direction. Steve --- Reprinted without permission from the Albuquerque Journal, Tuesday, Oct 19, 1999... PANEL OKS HACKY SACK ON PLAZA By Miguel Navrot Journal Staff Writer SANTA FE -- The Plaza's prodigal plaything -- the hacky sack -- may be on its way back to the town square. Members of the Public Safety Committee on Monday gave their recommendation, albeit on a split vote, to allow hacky sack back on the Plaza. Chairman Peso Chavez voted in favor of changing the current city ordinance that outlaws hacky sack, juggling, skateboarding or bicycle riding. Members Henry Valdez, Michael Trujillo and Herb Harris voted in favor. City Councilor Patti Bushee, proposal sponsor, also tried to have some juggling permitted in the Plaza. Monday, she abandoned the jugglers. "The juggler lobby didn't hit me up that hard with this," Bushee said. Under the proposal that met committee approval, police will have discretion to stop a circle of hacky sackers from kicking a foot bag if participants become dangerous to others on the Plaza. Hacky circles also will be prohibited from walkways. In a plea to approve the proposal, area hacky-sack player Lex Wenberg, 17, said the game was of "purity and simplicity" but also complex. Kicking the cloth surface of bead-filled sack presents "mathematical variables too numerous to count," Wenberg said, forcing players to "calculate the surface texture of the object." The teen also said hacky sack is a game enjoyed by people around the world, regardless of social or religious background or sexual orientation. It's an inexpensive sport, Wenberg said, making it available to youth without much money. Wenberg said he was among the string of teen-agers arrested in August, which helped put the issue back in front of city lawmakers. He said he was playing hacky sack for political reasons. "(It was) civil disobedience in the face of a law that I found to be unjust," he told committee members. Mike Cherry, who also told committee members he was arrested in August, said he wasn't even kicking a hacky sack at the time, but talking to some tourists. He also described being "thrown to the curb, twisted around, slammed into a cop car and cuffed." "Having this ordinance is an excuse for police to harass kids and meet quotas," Cherry charged. Concern over changing the ordinance was also heard. Committee member Robert Gurulé, who voted against the proposal, said skateboarders and in-line skaters will soon approach the city expecting they'll be allowed back on the Plaza. "Hacky sack is hardly passive," Gurulé said. "Next thing we'll have a three-ring circus. We'll have elephants, flame throwers and jugglers." Police Chief John Denko said a hacky sack could be dangerous, saying he's seen foot bags flying "head-high." He also said the department must enforce all laws equally. "This isn't our call. Whether it's distasteful or not, whether we like it or not, we have to enforce it," Denko said. The proposal must go before the City Council before it can become law. In other business, committee members again considered the safety of vendors hawking newspapers at city intersections. A committee topic for months, members have questioned whether the vendors present safety concerns for the city, motorists or themselves. The matter was scheduled to be heard again at next month's meeting. On Monday, committee members discussed having Santa Fe's two daily newspapers, the Albuquerque Journal and the Santa Fe New Mexican, compose a list of vending sites and have the committee approve those that city staffers felt were safe. Each newspaper company would then have to pay a $10 annual license fee to have a vendor at the approved intersections. Traffic, police and fire officials have recently surveyed intersections where newspapers are sold and determined eight of the 27, including St. Francis Drive and Cerrillos Road, are unsafe for vendors. The determination was based on intersection size, number of lanes, signals and traffic counts. Police Lt. Frank Rute, who presented the findings to the committee, was later asked by New Mexican Associate Editor and Publisher Billie Blair for specific numbers. Rute said he didn't have them. Police have said they know of no injuries to newspaper vendors. Brian Fantl, general manager with Albuquerque Publishing Co., said the Journal was sold at just three city-approved locations. "We don't want vendors in traffic," Fantl said, "but to eliminate these locations ... we have a serious problem with the prohibition at these locations." The discussion between committee members and newspaper representatives almost elevated to a shouting level. At one point, Chavez said public safety and newspaper sales at intersections may not go together. "That may be bad for your business, but we're here on the Public Safety Committee, trying to make sure that the public works in a safe manner," Chavez said. "Maybe that's my problem, that I'm trying to please everyone. That's my mistake." Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" ; format="flowed" Sender: owner-announce@footbag.org Welcome to the next millennium of footbag.org, a few months early. :-) Check out the newest Footbag WorldWide design at: http://www.footbag.org/ By the way, the 5th anniversary of the footbag.org domain was last month (it was created on September 26, 1994). --- Things you should know about the updated website: (1) A COMPLETE FACELIFT! Eric Cote and I spent months of back-and-forth, and a final 6-week-long marathon of implementation, updates, tweaks, reworks, etc. to bring you the new graphic design. Most of the credit for the facelift goes to Eric for his professional approach, excellent graphic design sensibility, brilliant high-quality designs, mastery of the learning curve, and dedication to the project. It was mostly his idea to do this; I hardly had to pressure him. :-) For those of you who don't know Eric, he's been a footbag player and part of our community for many years. He lives in Montreal, Quebec (Canada) and is a vital member of the Quebec Footbag Association. Among his credits before this are the programs for the '96 and '98 World Championships (in Montreal), though these are just a couple of the things he's done to add an element of professionalism to the presentation of our sport. There are still more changes to come, but Eric and I couldn't wait any longer to show you all what we'd been slaving over for the last six weeks. Also, for those of you who speak French, Eric's last name is spelled with a circumflex and an acute accent, but plaintext just doesn't cut it, so I apologize for not spelling his name right. :-) (2) MEMBERSHIP IS KEY! Footbag.org has always been *your* website as much as mine. It's been a place for footbag players to add their own club information and event listings, and to maintain the information themselves using a password. Well, I finally got around to doing something I'd planned from Day 1 -- the concept of "membership": A member of footbag.org gets his or her own profile, where they can set up their contact information in one place, and have that information fed into the other systems on the site. So, for instance, if you have a club listing and an event listing, you don't have to re-enter your phone number and e-mail address in each place -- all the contact information comes out of your member profile. Members can specify which pieces of information are "public" (shared with other members or displayed on club and event listings), and which pieces are private. For example, you may not want just anyone to know your street address, but you want to receive mailings for tournament announcements from IFC-sanctioned tournaments. You can control how much of your information is displayed in a public view. Member profiles in the aggregate also form the basis for a suite of services to come, provided by several different organizations. As footbag.org is a non-profit service, part of our objective is to create the infrastructure to enable centralization of key data that is used to keep track of tournament results, player rankings, mailing lists, etc. JOIN FOOTBAG.ORG NOW: If you haven't gotten an e-mail from me it the last day giving you your password, you probably don't have an account yet. People who had club listings on the previous version of the site will automatically become members and should have received e-mail from me with their passwords. (If not, please let me know.) The rest of you need to create your own account and can do so right away by going to: http://www.footbag.org/members/join Please help me out by putting as much (and as accurate) information as you can in your profile (including your mailing address, interests, and birthday), and if you are nervous to have others see your information, just turn off publishing for the fields you're worried about. However, the more information you publish, the more you will take advantage of the benefits I offer. Either way, I guarantee that information you mark as private will not be used without your express permission. (The only possible use so far is for IFC-sanctioned tournament directors to mail entry forms and the like.) Here's a summary of benefits of membership on footbag.org: (a) CONTACT YOUR FRIENDS You no longer have to write e-mail to the list, or ask friends of friends, to find phone numbers and/or e-mail address of footbag players. As long as they are members of footbag.org and keep their profiles up to date, as a member, you can find other players' published information quickly and easily. You can also see the last time the information was updated, which can help you know if the information is current. (b) FIND PLAYERS IN YOUR TOWN OR IN A PLACE YOU'RE VISITING If you don't already know the name of a member, you can get a list of members in a given city, state/province, country, and/or interest. The user interface for the member search function is improving, so bear with me if the current implementation is a little complicated. (c) BE FOUND By keeping your member profile up to date, you can make sure other players can find you. A lot of people don't want to create a club listing because they're just one person. Well, this is the answer to your prayers. :-) You can set up your profile so that other players can find you based on public information in your profile. (d) GET AN E-MAIL ALIAS @footbag.org This is not a free mail account, but rather a free "forwarding" service. As long as you keep your e-mail address up to date in your member profile, all e-mail sent to your alias @footbag.org will be redirected to your "real" e-mail address. For example, if you set your alias to be "freestyler7", then e-mail to freestyler7@footbag.org will delivered to the mail address in your profile. This allows you to give people you @footbag.org address without having to worry that maybe later you will change e-mail addresses as you change schools, jobs, etc. (e) MAINTAIN YOUR OWN CLUB LISTING The club list works a lot like before, except that members no longer have to wait for my approval to add a club. With membership, new clubs and updates appear instantly on the website. I do, however, reserve the right to control the content of club listings based on my fair use policy, to be published at a later date. (f) ADD YOUR EVENT TO THE EVENT CALENDAR The footbag event list works a lot like before, too, with the same exception -- new events do not have to be approved before they appear on the site. Any member can add an event to the event list. However, as with clubs, I reserve the right to modify or delete events that don't appear appropriate. The official policy will be spelled out later, but this is no different than before. (g) ADD YOUR OWN TIPS AND COMMENTS TO THE FREESTYLE MOVE LIST The freestyle move list can now be annotated by members! This will also be improved over time, but at this point members can add comments or tips to any trick on the list. (h) GET ACCURATE EVENT RESULTS TRACKING (starting Jan. 2000) As part of the IFC results and seeding initiative, tournament directors and the IFC seeding committee will be using footbag.org as the repository for official results. All information will be keyed to each player, using either their WFA member number or their footbag.org member number. Some of the plumbing for this has been done, but a lot more is needed before we can bring you this service. The long-term goal is that each player can find his ranking, results, etc., quickly and easily, and tournament directors and other players can get quick summaries of relative rankings based on tournament results over given periods of time. (i) ...AND MORE TO COME... As usual, there's a lot more on the list than actually got done. :-) So, stand by over the next year as more services are rolled out. --- The only thing I'd ask is that people take it easy on me over the next couples weeks. As usual when I've been working non-stop for many weeks and publish a new feature (or a whole new website, in this case :-)), I am barraged with e-mail, comments, complaints, questions, problems, and congratulations. Well, I'd love to get the latter, but please try to go easy on me if you don't think it's a very important issue. I will be manually approving all the hundreds (hopefully) of new-member applications over the next few days and will not have a lot of time for other stuff. But, please do let me know of major problems or issues you have. Thanks, and welcome to the 6th year of Footbag WorldWide, your online footbag community. And, for the record, Footbag WorldWide is a service of the non-profit World-Wide Footbag Foundation, Inc. (See http://www.footbag.org/wwff.html) All the work is entirely volunteer. Thanks again to Eric Cote for all the time he spent with me on this over the last months, and all the time he and others will be donating in the coming months. Steve
