I was at a friends house last night, and they were watching 'Survivor'. At the end of the episode, there was a commercial break, suddenly, there were some shots of footbag net.......being broadcast on prime time TV to millions of viewers!! It was a Reebok commercial, and had several brief cuts from some footbag net action. The shots were all very brief, and I didn't have time to recognize anyone, and I'm quite certain it was footbag instead of Takraw. So, I was sitting there, watching this, and started freaking out, not believing I'd seen what I had really just seen. My friends looked at me like I was crazy. Anyone else see this? -Cory Current From owner-footbag@list.footbag.org Fri Mar 2 11:17:47 2001 Received: (from majordom@localhost) by list.footbag.org (8.9.3/8.9.3) id LAA26116 for footbag-outgoing; Fri, 2 Mar 2001 11:17:47 -0800 X-Authentication-Warning: list.footbag.org: majordom set sender to owner-footbag@footbag.org using -f From: Edwin Veltman Received: by ep-notes3.wlcmail.com(Lotus SMTP MTA v4.6.4 (830.2 3-23-1999)) id 86256A03.0061BF45 ; Fri, 2 Mar 2001 11:47:39 -0600 X-Lotus-FromDomain: WILSON LEARNING To: Cory Current cc: footbag@list.footbag.org Message-ID: <86256A03.0061BEB9.00@ep-notes3.wlcmail.com> Date: Fri, 2 Mar 2001 09:39:47 -0800 Subject: Re: [footbag] Footbag Net during 'Survivor' commercial last night... I caught it too, (the commercial, that is), but I was a few seconds away from recording it. But, as was mentioned before in the list, the ad can be viewed online at http://www.adcritic.com/content/reebok-anthem.html Looking at it online, it does look like footbag to me, and there was also a shot of takraw. If anyone recorded 'Survivor', the commercial was right at the end of the show, I think right after it ended. It would be nice if someone could do a still capture from it and it could be positively identified. -edwin From owner-footbag@list.footbag.org Fri Mar 2 11:40:55 2001 Received: (from majordom@localhost) by list.footbag.org (8.9.3/8.9.3) id LAA26198 for footbag-outgoing; Fri, 2 Mar 2001 11:40:55 -0800 Received: from llic.net (llic.net [209.125.90.2]) by list.footbag.org (8.9.3/8.9.3) with ESMTP id LAA26195 for ; Fri, 2 Mar 2001 11:40:54 -0800 Received: from [209.125.90.203] (dhcp-24-16-24-150.corp.home.net [24.16.24.150]) by llic.net (8.9.3/8.9.3/Debian 8.9.3-21) with ESMTP id LAA29818 for ; Fri, 2 Mar 2001 11:36:09 -0800 X-Authentication-Warning: llic.net: Host dhcp-24-16-24-150.corp.home.net [24.16.24.150] claimed to be [209.125.90.203] Mime-Version: 1.0 X-Sender: brat@209.125.90.21 Message-Id: In-Reply-To: <86256A03.0061BEB9.00@ep-notes3.wlcmail.com> References: <86256A03.0061BEB9.00@ep-notes3.wlcmail.com> Date: Fri, 2 Mar 2001 11:35:43 -0800 To: footbag@list.footbag.org From: Steve Goldberg Subject: [footbag] Reebok Commercial w/Footbag Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" ; format="flowed" Sender: owner-footbag@footbag.org Folks, I put a still photo from the Reebok ad (which everyone keeps asking about -- YES, there's footbag in the Reebok Anthem at that has been running since January) on my website: http://www.footbag.org/gallery/show/reebok-ad-2001.jpg The ad itself doesn't have much more than what the photo above shows, then it goes to some other thing, then to takraw. But the shot is great either way. Anyone know who it is and where it was filmed? It doesn't look familiar but there's not much context. How many Asian footbag players do you know that do roll spike? Only takraw players use those knee wraps and wear nanyang shoes. The ball in that pic only looks small because it's high in the air. The court shot was definitely from an Asian country (thailand or malaysia) because it was a cement court with lines draw in. Those players look very good, but I don't know if they are pros. Anyways, it doesn't matter. To the average joe that saw the clip, it either went completely over their head (since it's a couple of seconds long) or hopefully they will recognize that it is a "foot volleyball" game. This action clip is definitely the best high quality shot that I ever saw and the best thing was that it was slow-mo. Also, I believe there is two version of the ad, a short and long version. The long version included, my favorite, a overhead closeup shot of the guy's face doing the roll showing him grimacing as he tries to slam the crap out of the ball. Very cool. It is our belief that Jeff has made valued contributions to our sport and should be recognized for those contributions. The way the nomination process works is that any interested person can make nominations and only the five people with the most nominations will be put on the final ballot with carry over from previous years. Only current Hall of Fame members can vote on the final ballot to decide who will be inducted for that year. WE WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT JEFF JOHNSON GETS ON THIS YEARS' BALLOT. If you agree to this in the least, and even if you are indifferent, please take a moment to nominate Jeff to the Footbag Hall of Fame. You can do this by e-mailing your nomination to thehuff1@aol.com Please respond soon the deadline for nominations is 3/31/01. Thanks for your help and support. That morning, after months of planning, and this person begged to late register, but had no money !! That person, however, was serious about the game, riding his bike in from Hermiston , Oregon ! About 200 miles! I said OK, and to meet us all at a grade school down the street, where the "Hacky Sack Tour Team" was to put on an assembly for the school kids, and show all our training campers what the goal was: teach the game as a fun activity for all ages, and that it is athletic, and could be a real sport. That person showed up all wet in a blanket poncho, with a cast on 1 forearm, bandana over his wet stringy hair, wet shaggy beard, and looking like a pirate, wanting to pillage what we had worked so hard to set up !! On a bike ! So, after the first day of orientation, show & training, we included everyone in our first real group meal. About the time everyone is getting done, including his own meal, Jefferry William Johnson starts asking, " are you going to finish that food?" from about everyone at the table !! "What an animal !!" Is what most replied, and got out of his way !! he was hungry !! The rest is history in footbag. He is our "Animal" !! Jeff is the spirit of fun that is the core of this little game. He always has the time for teaching kids, of all ages, making them smile. He is a showman, that given the opportunity to be a part of footbag, has enriched many lives with his personality. He has been a great ambassador of this game all over the u.s., despite the fact he is still "The Animal" !! Our Annie. It is because of this personality that is hard not to care for , since he cares for us , his family in footbag, that Jeff is being solicited for induction into this little sport's Hall of Fame, specifically this year. He is at the core of what this game has been about. He has not been a multi , multi , titled world champion, but don't try to beat him at Footbag Golf , as an example ! He has been a multi tour team member , however, and in demonstration, or tournament play, a forceful, playful personality, that has enriched others lives. The Beaver Open, where he sets a stage for the kids , and older, so called adults, is a prime example of a gathering of friends of the game, and his time to organize "late night at Annie's " that has been a can't miss event every year. Why? Because it is fun. That's Jeff's gift back to his friends in footbag. He tries to make everyone have fun with the game. Hopefully, you can share your own Animal stories at his induction into the Footbag Hall of Fame this year. If you are there, it will be the greatest Animal laugh alike contest ever held !! I knew Jeff BEFORE his 200 mile bicycle trip from Hermistion to Portland - I lived in the neighboring city of Pendleton which is where I learned learned to kick. Ted Huff has a few colorful stories about kicking at the Pendleton Roundup, but I digress... Jeff was hands down the worst kicker I had ever seen in those days. His kicking strategy was as follows: 1) It is best to kick in steel-toed work boots. 2) In a circle, wait for the bag to come near you. Near means within a 15 foot radius. 3) Take a big step, and kick the bag just as hard as you can, preferably contacting the bag about head high. 4) Chase the bag as fast as you can, get under it, but don't try to kick it. Just let it hit you. 5) Laugh maniacally. This was fun. Fun for Jeff, not for the rest of us. Well, a year or so passed and I didn't see Jeff. One day I opened the the East Oregonian - the local paper - and saw a picture of a clean cut guy kicking a sack. I was surprised to see the name of the kicker, Jeff Johnson, and marveled at the coincidence of two hackers with the same name. As I read on it told the story of this guy's rise through the ranks to become a touring member with the National Hacky Sack Association. I marveled further as I noted that this Jeff Johnson was also from Hermiston, Oregon... Of course, in footbag there is only one Jeff Johnson (I hope). Through the years, Jeff amazed me at his creativity and enthusiasm for the sport. I have seen more crazy technique out of Jeff in ALL the footbag games than with all the other players I've seen combined. His experiments in net, golf, and freestyle were often successful, ALWAYS entertaining. No footbag hall of fame should be without an animal Kick On, Paul V. I began an extensive full-time professional footbag career in 1986 with the World Footbag Association which I am proud to say that I still enjoy today. Over the many rides this sport has given me, I have been fortunate to meet a great deal of wonderful people. As we approach the final hour for nominations for footbag's Hall of Fame, I ask all players of this sport new and old to not forget the pioneers of this game who have helped to mold its existence. Naturally, most new players have little knowledge of the firery competitors and devoted volunteers of the early 80's. Therefore, I write this message to inform, educate and request your nomination for the following footbag heroes in my book. Derrick Fogle - Player, event and club director, former world recorder holder, newsletter publisher, World Champion and the heart beat of footbag in the midwest since 1983. Tim Vozar - Player, event and club director, newsletter publisher, World Champion and the driving force of footbag in Texas since 1984. Eric Cole - Player, event and club director, World Championship competitor, manufacturer of some of our sports finest footbags (Coles Footbags) and Utah's footbag ambassador since 1980. Constance Constable - Player, event director, Guinness world recorder holder, World Champion, founder of Women Alive and Kickin' and footbag's most active promoter of women players since 1982. Although my player bios are brief, my personal knowledge and individual working relationships with each of the above candidates would fill volumes. I ask for your confidence in me through my extensive career by supporting a nomination for each of these fine people. If you have any questions, comments, threats or accusations, please address them to me via email or by calling (970-879-8775). We have many people to thank for footbag's success, and I believe we have plenty of time to recognize those who are currently active in our sports' promotion. I just ask that we not forget those who no longer have the energy and/or freedom to compete and promote at the enormous level they once did. Please take a moment to join me in nominating the above devotees to the Footbag Hall of Fame by sending an email nomination to thehuff1@aol.com Remember the deadline (3/31/01) is fast approaching, so don't delay, please do it today.
