We did a halftime demo at a Chicago Fire pro soccer game last Saturday night, here at Soldiers Field, about a half mile north of where we held Worlds'99 prelims in Chicago. Thanks to everyone who participated, it was a great time for all! Thanks to footbag.org "announce" list for helping to get the word out to our locals! I am so fired up about this, I thought I would send you my notes while they were still fresh in my head. We got great reception from the crowds and from the management of the team. They want us back, and that won't be a problem. We'll schedule it in. I have some notes about getting this kind of demo, and how we can profit from it. More importantly, I hope, is that what I am writing here will be used by other footbag clubs across the US and perhaps the world. That small groups of footbaggers in major markets, will use these techniques to create awareness of our sport through the venue of "Halftime Demos," be they at Soccer, Baseball (between double headers), Football and even Basketball. And the clubs that host these types of demo's can not only profit by bringing more players into the "sport" side of footbag, but they can also profit financially. Read on. Q) How do I approach the major teams that we want to do demo's for? A) Pick up the phone. A simple phone call to the marketing department should do. Ask for the person in charge of arranging halftime demo's and you have the ball rolling. Or check out their website, they may have a "contact us" which would give you the phone number that you need to get in their corporate offices, but it may even tell you who you need to contact. Q) How do the halftime demo's operate? A) Well, with the Chicago Fire Soccer Team, there are two factors at work... they are looking for entertainment that they don't have to "pay" to be there (i.e. most professional performers are professional because they charge for their services), and a foot oriented, fast paced, did I mention foot oriented sport, AND they want to sell tickets to the game. The little known secret is that they will let just about anyone out on the field to do a demo, if they can sell 15 seats (at the lowest discounted rate). The even littler known secret is, that they don't care what you are promoting (they expect you to be promoting *something*) as long as it doesn't conflict with their sponsors, its okay. We had to buy 15 tickets at $9 each, and we had to pay for it ourselves, but never again. Q) How can my club profit from these kinds of demo's? A) Besides getting more members and exposure for the sport, now that you have something to sell (exposure to thousands of guaranteed spectators), you can approach sponsors to pay for this viewership. Get the marketing kit from the team. It will have Average Attendance, other ad rates charged bythe team (to help show the value you are offering) and key information about the team that you can glean and use in your marketing efforts. Find out from the teams Marketing Department, who their sponsors are. Contact sponsors who aren't in conflict with that list. Offer to wear their shirts, lay out banners on the ground (or stancions that don't need stakes), whatever the team will allow you to do out there in the demo that could be seen as an advertising benefit, a mention on the loudspeaker PA system, get up on the Jumbotron. Find out what you can get for free from the team, and offer it to the sponsors. I think a minimum of $500 for a demo is reasonable, they probably pay ten times that for a tv ad, where this kind of ad has more of an emotional tie and likelyhood to be remembered for its uniqueness. Take the cost of the 15 tickets from that (in our case it was $135) and the club members get a free night at the game, and the club gets $365. Not bad for a nights work. You can schedule these way in advance, and once you get a sponsor (you should get some tickets for the sponsor to come out and enjoy the game too, for good will and an opportunity for them to "live" their investment), they are sure to see the value and will be back for more. Another way you can profit (harder to do and takes maybe a little more work) is by selling the tickets to the game to interested people at more than what you paid for them, although this doesn't interest me as much as the cross marketing angle, it takes more record keeping, and possibly a financial commitment up front to purchase the tickets (and thereby an obligation to sell them). I would prefer to profit from the marketing value of the demo, and not pushing tickets... but if you know a couple of soccer teams that want to come out and you can't resist selling 50 or 100 tickets at a time, then go for it. But doing it one at a time takes a level of commitment that I am not capable of. q) What kind of content do you put into a demo for mass crowds? a) Keeping in mind that we have no audio (except what happens to be playing on the PA system at the park, as there are sometimes multiple "halftime" promotions going on at once, and that the script, if any is about 30 words. It is more of an introduction, than a narrative. Keep the "Intro" simple, be sure to mention footbag.org, and of course, your sponsor. We had initially (and almost because of apathy from our net players) planned a freestyle-only demo. Thanks to Steve Smith, Chris (from San Francisco) and Steve's little brothers Alex and Brad (who proudly held the net stancions up so the demo could go on, no stakes allowed in a field like this), we were able to have net. And from a spectator standpoint, it is good that we did. 7 Freestylers in the middle of a giant field (it is bigger than life when you are down there) would have gotten lost, if we weren't all kicking around the perimiter of the court. I think ideally, two net courts would have been ideal. I recommend about 10 to 15 people on the field for the demo, or more. All dressed in black shorts and the sponsor t-shirt. Have one person on each net stancion to hold them up, have each person in the demo bring out a cone and set them down to make the court more visible from the stands. Get the net players to volley and spike and go for rallies of 8 or 10 contacts minimum. Around them, have the freestylers shred. Pace yourselves. We were told it would be about 8 minutes, it was more like 12. I think it would be prudent to have people kick a hundred kicks and then shred for a long string, then do kicks again and repeat. Remember, the crowd doesn't know a blurry whirl from a pendulum, and guess which trick they always ask to see again... the pendulum of course. I would say to reply offline, but I think this is just the kind of discussion that belongs on this list. (It also belongs on the Freestyle list, but I would get shot for cross-posting, so I put it on the footbag list because it is for the betterment of the sport, and it requires that the net players and the freestylers join together in promoting the sport). If you have any questions, lets talk. See ya! I wonder if any one of the wonderful BAFL host folks can spare, not floor or bed or even closet space, but simple driveway or street space for me to park and sleep? Of course I would be looking for the most centrally located place to the Net and Golf events if at all possible =) 2) I currently in the market for a doubles partner for the event. Anyone out there still looking? please reply to steved@rosequarter.com with any answers, questions, or comments. Thanks all. This is going to be a blast! The Streetball School Finals took place in an ice stadium (now without ice) in Berlin today, probably the biggest streetball contest in Germany. I don't know any exact numbers, but I guess there were about 300 schoolgirls and -boys competing on about 25 courts in this stadium. And the FC Footstar Berlin was asked to do a demonstration, and so did we! Combined with some well-chosen music and a short introduction, Julia Boehm, Ole Schnack and me did some freestyle for about 5 minutes on our bright red mat. Crowds gathered around us, cheering for something they had obviously never seen before. Then the first song ended, we removed the mat and set up the net, the stanchions hold by Julia and me, and (Europ. Intermed. Doubl. Net Vice Champion) Ole and (Europ. Intermed. Doubl. & Singl. Net Champion) Patrick Schrickel could stun with their skills. The crowd was going "oooohh!" and "aaah!" on every spike and dig, and the plane crossing action was even more fascinating for the young spectators. After the show, we gave away some bags of the new "planetfootbag" collection and some nice footbag stickers (Ole got nearly trampled down by the masses while giving away this stuff, they were hunting him just to get a bag). Then we moved away from the center court in order to have some shredding and net at the sidelines, many were following us, willing to try this "new thing" (the "old thing" is what they know as Hacky Sack, standing in a circle and kicking). We luckily had lots of bags with us (those samples that companies send to show their "quality work" in footbags), so everyone who wanted could try. We instructed many kids how to do the basic stalls, and some persons went into net games - and did quite good, which I think is related to their soccer skills. I am happy to say that nearly the half of the interested persons was female! In reflection, I'd say events like this are even better for promoting our sport than a soccer match, since here we had young, active and sporty people as spectators, not Joe "too fat & lazy" Average. And this basketball-streetball-hiphop-thing does harmonize with footbag. DO more demos! Here's the results of last weekend "El Championnat de Footbag de Montreal" This year i used our major sponsor "El Zaz Bar" logo to illustrated the t-shirt. Their mascotte has a kind of "Pancho Villa" look. So it was fun to do the design with something else that a straight footbag player. After spending a week in the rain prior to the tournament, the weather finally cleared up for the weekend. So there was no mud fest like the year before. We had the honor to have quite a few good players from out of town which is always fun, and our local Alexis Deschenes which haven't seen his homeland for two years, i would guess. We were treated this year of one of the best doubles final match i've seen. Yves and Alexis played an amazing match against Manu and Patrick. There were lots of spiking and lots of digging. It is on tape, so some will have the chance to see it maybe during worlds. Open singles 1. Emmanuel Bouchard 2. Yves Archambault 3. Martin Graton 4. David Butcher 5. Rob Adams 6. John Leys 7. We will need approximately 30 nets. I've got commitments from Bay Area players to bring about half of what's needed. If you have a net available to you, and can bring it to Worlds, or can have someone else bring it, please reply to this e-mail now. The tournament's success depends on having enough nets and your help will be greatly appreciated! Thanks so much! The 2001 version is destined to be a great World Footbag Championships! Crash a net!
