I was reading a article on footbag.org about footbag in the Guiness Book of World Records and it said that although footbag isnt't in the dictionary, it's at least recognized by Guiness. Well, now it is officially a known word. Here's the "correct" definition of footbag as it stands on dictionary.com: foot·bag n. 1. A small round bag filled with plastic pellets or other material and used in games that require its being kept aloft with the feet. 2. Any of the games in which such a bag is used. Just thought I'd post this in case anyone was interested. ~Glenn "BoZ" Gentzke _________________________________________________________________ Descargue GRATUITAMENTE MSN Explorer en http://explorer.msn.es/intl.asp From owner-footbag@list.footbag.org Tue Aug 14 00:43:20 2001 Received: (from majordom@localhost) by list.footbag.org (8.9.3/8.9.3) id AAA28747 for footbag-outgoing; Tue, 14 Aug 2001 00:43:20 -0700 X-Authentication-Warning: list.footbag.org: majordom set sender to owner-footbag@footbag.org using -f Received: from llic.net (sql.market.net [209.125.90.2]) by list.footbag.org (8.9.3/8.9.3) with ESMTP id RAA07850 for ; Sat, 4 Aug 2001 17:43:25 -0700 Received: from albatross.prod.itd.earthlink.net (albatross.mail.pas.earthlink.net [207.217.120.120]) by llic.net (8.9.3/8.9.3/Debian 8.9.3-21) with ESMTP id KAA10182 for ; Sat, 4 Aug 2001 10:36:12 -0700 Received: from anotherthought (user-uivf3fp.dsl.mindspring.com [165.247.141.249]) by albatross.prod.itd.earthlink.net (EL-8_9_3_3/8.9.3) with SMTP id KAA03305 for ; Sat, 4 Aug 2001 10:36:11 -0700 (PDT) From: "Brian Bolduc" To: "Footbag@Footbag.Org" Subject: [footbag] Hi all, I'm new Date: Sat, 4 Aug 2001 13:36:08 -0400 Message-ID: MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-Priority: 3 (Normal) X-MSMail-Priority: Normal X-Mailer: Microsoft Outlook IMO, Build 9.0.2416 (9.0.2910.0) Importance: Normal X-MimeOLE: Produced By Microsoft MimeOLE V5.50.4133.2400 Sender: owner-footbag@footbag.org Just thought i'd drop everyone a line cause i'm new to the list. For those of you who were there if you were close enough to hear, thank you for your attention (I having my vocal nodules removed this Friday, just kidding). For those of you who were more than ten feet from the front of the room read on. This was the three minute speech I prepared (really just three, I timed it). The footbag Hall of Fame is about acknowledging the players and promoters who have been selected by their peers for the contributions they have made to footbag. It is also about growing a sport, through my filter it's much like raising a child. It goes through stages, as a baby footbag is totally dependent, as an adolescent it seeks its independence and as footbag ages it begins to work on interdependence. We all know we struggle and succeed at different stages in life. Hopefully along the way we can keep the emotional damage to a minimum. At 24 or so years old footbag is leaving its independent stage and looking at interdependence (some may argue that human years and "sport" years are not the same, oh well). As footbag moves through the stages I would like to remember the original rules of play in the circle: 1.) No saying you're sorry. 2.) No serving to yourself. Through these two rules we hope to teach our child/the footbag community to nurture respect for self and others involved in the circle and gratitude for the privilege to share this incredible game. With these thoughts in mind please listen to this quote from a Robert Fulgum poem called Family Man, listen as though you are a parent and footbag is your child... "You will never know what kind of parent you were or if you did right or wrong. Never. And you will worry about this as long as you live. But when your children have children and you watch them do what they do, you will have part of an answer." The final piece I would like to read goes as follows... "A few years ago, at the Seattle Special Olympics, nine contestants, all physically or mentally disabled, assembled at the starting line for the 100-yard dash. At the gun, they all started out, not exactly in a dash, but with a relish to run the race to the finish and win. All, that is, except one little boy who stumbled on the asphalt, tumbled over a couple of times, and began to cry. The other eight heard the boy cry. They slowed down and looked back. Then they all turned around and went back... everyone of them. One girl with Down's Syndrome bent down and kissed him and said, "This will make it feel better". Then all nine linked arms and walked together to the finish line. Everyone in the stadium stood, and the cheering went on for several minutes. People who were there are still telling the story. Why? Because deep down we know one thing: What matters most in life is more than winning for ourselves. What matters in this life is helping others win, even if it means slowing down and changing our course." Let's raise our glasses or fists in a toast to respect and honor all the different elements of footbag, golf, consecutives, freestyle, net and the person kicking in the park who may never play any of these games and remember this... "A candle loses nothing by lighting another." ###### To the 2001 inductees, Yeves Archambault, Constance Constable, Jeffrey "Animal" Johnson, Andy Linder and Dennis Ross thank you for all that you have given to footbag and may your candle glow brightly for years to come. This is Eric Windsor. I just got back from Worlds a couple of days ago. It was a major blast! Special thanks goes out to Lisa McDaniel and all of the Worlds crew. Special thanks to the Ironman and Stickman (I love my new stickman shirt). Just to let everyone know, this was the most professional display of freestyle talent that I had ever seen before, especially on finals night. There were freestyle and net videos in between performances while the judges tabulated scores. There were extremely humorous Player Profile videos played throughout the day (Thank you disco ninja.....). There were some amazing juggling acts and comedic performances held by some of San Franciscoís Best Jugglers. Tim Kelly was insane as always. He made me and another person from the crowd (I cant remember who) lay down on the stage. He then layed a plank of wood across our stomachs then put a cylinder on top of that, then another plank on top of the cylinder. He then stood on the top plank balancing on the cylinder. He then decided to juggle some clubs. It looked very trippy from my perspective. This other guy (I can remember name) could do some seriously sick golf ball balancing tricks that were so amazing yet looked so easy for this guy. There were Scores posted on the Visual Board almost immediately after the competitorís routines or shred. One of the coolest competitions I saw was called, The BIG THREE. The big three competitors were performing in between all of the other various freestyle competitions. Sunil Jani on day one hit his first Three trick combo on the first try (flurry, toe blur, pixie eggbeater). He then proceeded to do the unthinkable. He reserved his next 6 tries for the trick...NEMESIS. A quadruple dexterity that has been in the minds of shredders since the day I started playing. He didn't hit it, but he was very courageous to try such a hard move in front of so many people watching. I could not do that. Props goes to my friend Ryan Mulroney, that guy is the shit. Three different routine songs. All bad ass routines. Lon shocked the hell out of me with his Finals Routine. He did the song Black or White by Michael Jackson and when it said black or white he changed from a black bag to a white bag and vice versa. Toby Robinson went out Harlem Globtrotter style with some "hooping" that couldn't be matched even by the master of hooping Scott Davidson. There was just some seriously sick presentation this year. "And aint nobody dope as Rich hes just so fresh and clean" This one guy (I cant remember name) did his routine and for like the last 20 seconds he did this trippy yoga style handstand with the bag on his back and he balanced while the music was this loud same tone kind of like the sound of the THX introduction at the movies. That shit was like waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa. It was totally a trip and had me and Joe Crain Laughing for like 15 minutes strait. No one else seemed to be laughing, but to me it was the coolest thing Ive ever seen in a routine (dont worry Scott I still love hooping). There was so much more I can't even go into it. Torch, Tsunami, Rippin, Daryl, Scott, E Wullf, Irish, Lon, Mulroney, Nelson, All of the Finalist put on a great show. Props goes to Allen Hagget for winning the biggest single trick competition with a Blurry reverse swivel. As far as intermediate big tricks in routines are concerned Jermey Mirken hit a Tapping reverse whirl. and Perter Bevitori (not sure if thats how his name is spelt) hit a Pixie whirl and A phat diving snowboarder. There were many activities going on besides freestyle and net. Mainly......4-square. Yes thats right, 4-square. On the first day of the competition there were like two huge forsquare circles going on and like barely anyone freestyling. I looked at my friend Joe Crain who co-invented the modern style of foursquare and said, "Holy shit what have you guys done?" "4sqare is taking over, barely anyone is freestyling" "this is scary". It seriously took over folks. There were many late night drunken 4 square Jams. Myself I am glad to be a member of F.S.P. the Four Square Posse. Some other F.S.P. members include, Lon Smith, Toby Robinson, Joe Crain, Chad Devlahovich, Paul Munger, Daryl Genz, Dr. Ridiculous, Rippin, And more.... These guys and more represented some serious 4 square action at worlds with some incredible "fakies" and saves. Dr Ridiculous is just strait up ridiculous. There was lots of Juggling. Props to Chad Devlahovich and Sam Colclough for getting a lot better at Juggling. Coin Snatching was pretty rad. Me and Alan Hagget were trying some street style "danger hack" footbag. doing tricks while jumping up on ledges doing tricks and jumping off again doing tricks. Alan Is sick with that shit. He was like shredding on the ground then did a move up to a 3 foot, narrow ledge, started shredding on that narrow ledge for a few moves, did a torque off of it and kept going on the ground then went back up the ledge and back down. He did like a 25 contact string while doing all this cool ledge stuff. He also did some moves while going up a whole flight of stairs, something ive been wanting to do for a long time. He was doing 2 and 3s up it but it was still very impressive. I would like to see more "danger hack" in the future, by other people I tried it and was able to pull a symposium whirl from the Ledge after practicing for a while. This was from the ground I jumped up to the ledge and did a clipper then just jumped strait off. That shredding on the narrow surface is hard and I need to school it more. There was alot a lot of skateboarding going on. I saw Hagget do an Olie Stalefish off of a 5 stair. That was pretty rad. San Francisco is an awesome town for skating. I made some pretty cool trading cards. Except there are a few mistakes on them. Career Achievements is spelt wrong (Acheivments). I didn't even know this till recently and it was very embarrassing. Eric Wullfs Birthday is wrong It is suppose to be the year of 69. Sorry Ironman (he'll probably kick my butt later on). And For Lon Smith it said he invented "swadda" a swirling da da curve. Well its actually a pixie swirling da da curve from a toe. Sorry about that to all the guys I made mistakes on. If anyone can find other mistakes on them Iím sorry for those too. I had them printed in a rush situation and messed up. OOPS!. I had so much fun last week, even though I didn't get to play as much as I would have like too I did manage to shred about 3 times throughout the week. We all missed Red, Matt Churney, and all the other dope ass mo fo's that missed out. Cant wait till next year, Im always a year on a year off a year on a year off. Watch. WICKED Eric Windsor P.S. What do you say to someone when someone who doesn't know much English asks what does "wicked" mean. I was like ummmm its means evilness. I think they thought the meaning was "to be mean" It was just really weird cause "wicked" could be used as slang just like dope, or sick, or amazing but I think they think its "to be an asshole" It was just funny. It was such a blast to have you all in this neck of the woods. It was all put together last moment as a way to save Worlds by Lisa McDaniel/Julie Symons and the worlds crew yet it turned out to be an epic Worlds. You know a lot of people went up to me and told me that the freestyle finals was the best event in the history of freestyle footbag and our sport ever! That is a bold statement. But get this, so many people all said the exact same thing!!! That was so good to hear, I know that myself and the worlds freestyle crew put a lot of heart, energy, and sleepless nights planning and implementing this event. I never had as much fun as i did thursday and saturday of the event as well as all the hours before hand planning it out. I noticed in the Worlds wrap-up there was a few names accidently left off, some key people who helped make this event possible: Ahren Gehrman and Tuan Vu. Ahren donated numerous nights putting his energy into the creative process of the event. He spent countless hours setting up that theater getting that lighting the way perfect so you freestylers could perform the awesome routines that you did. After no sleep sat night and Ahren, Sunil, Eric, Carol, Tu, and Eric's cousin had to spend the whole morning taking down the lights, repiecing the floor together, and mopping the whole floor, beer stains and all. So thank you Ahren!! Tuan Vu, the technical master, he was so on everything. He never volunteered for anything but he ended up doing so much with working with the programs and staying up all night editing videos and trouble shooting technical problems while his cruel brother told him what he wanted in his videos. Sunil Jani took his time out to promote the event and wave the flag to make this an unforgettable event. Carol Wedeyemer put her marriage on the line to produce a very special art show alongside our venue. Lisa Monti tirelessly distributed those beautiful posters in the city and added the important information on worlds tickets. Thank you to Eric Wulff for having the courage to end the cycle of weak venues and giving freestyle what it rightful deserves, class. Why foster the level of talent of freestyle to godly levels when it can't even be appreciated beyond a bunch of hardcore freestylers (why have a bunch of amazing freestylers when the only crowd they have to perform in front of is other footbaggers in elementary school gyms)? For once, the general public could come watch freestyle and not die of boredom with judging chances and dead time. The general public paid 10-15 dollars each just to watch freestyle and we were not about to let them down. Yes there was a front page article in the San Francisco Chronicle but sales for finals night were strong prior to that article so we most likely would have sold out anyway. We had to turn away many people and there was standing room only. All we lacked was a big sign out of the theater that said, "SOLD OUT". It was Eric's idea to have instant scoring. He tried it at Westerns this past year and got heat for it has critics claimed it was more work for taking the same amount of time. They were wrong. There has been criticism on how freestyle has been run in the past and those days are over. Whenever a big sponsor is ready to support footbag, the level of play and professionalism is ready to be a TV sport or performance art show. Tim Kelly was a hero this past week. He is normally used to receiving thousands of dollars to perform comedy/juggling skits for corporate events. How much did he make....maybe a hundred dollars to zero. What did Tim for us, he brought world class talented comedians/jugglers/performance artist...who work venues that sell tickets for $50 dollars a seat and rake in thousands of dollars .....they all did it for free!! Not only that, they all walked, "whoah, footbag is actually awesome!" It's actually something cool, unlike Stuff magazine calling us a bunch of "wusses" Heck, We now actually have fans! Events like Sick 3 and Shred:30 saw the light of day and were not just underground events. Thanks for Tim Kelly and Ahren Gehrman for their segment on the description of the add/judging system. Ahren would display what an 1,2,3,4,5,6 add tricks looked like for the audience while Tim described the system in layman's terms. I would like to thank lots of other people, without them, it would not have ran the way it did, like Vince Bradley and Allan Haggett for data entry Alexis Deschenes (sound man), Steve Goldberg and Lisa McDaniel, Brent Welch (software), Julie Symons, the good people at theater Artaud (who laughed at us at first and said, "thanks for the three grand, suckas" but then enjoyed our company as we mopped their floors), Sam Conlon, Peter Irish and Greg Nelson, the core worlds staff, BAFL, West Coast Chaos especially Will Guyette and PT Lovern, How could you forget the "First Family", Tara Ohr, anyone who had to judge instead of watch, the worlds staff that managed the tickets and beer tables and lots of little details. One video we forgot to produce was the credits for the core freestyle crew........... Producer Eric Wulff Co-producer Carol Wedeymeyer Noveau Art Direction Tu Vu Technical Advisor/Producer Tuan Vu Freestyle Producer Ahren Gehrman Freestyle Producer Sunil Jani Master of Cermonies Tim Kelly Judging Administrator Vince Bradley Data Entry Hero Allan Haggett If worlds is back in San Francisco, beware. It's going to be bigger, badder, better in so many ways. It's all top secret now, I guess you all better come and find out what's next in store for the evolution of freestyle. Tu Vu PS look out for the first footbag video joint released by the Franciscan "First Family" of Footbag Freestyle (F5). PPS Footbag Evolution Forecast............... In 5 years, Footbag Four-Square and Doubles 4-square will merge all footbag events, net, freestyle, consecutives, singles, mixed, doubles, womens, open, intermediate, and beginners. All will be messed into a single event, "four-square" and it will be dominated by 14 year old European footbaggers. There is no tradition of it here at all and we are a few people enjoying it and also trying to improve our skills. Is there anyone else out there in Britain who plays net or want to play net? Or, if any of you net players are passing through London, please give us a call and come to one of our sessions. He didn't get to do his performance, missing his pool and getting scratched, but did a great job judging for two days in spite of having been scratched. the only thing i seem to find tough swallowing though, is that i really thought I was the only critic to come out of westerns. :-) And i'm not sure if anyone else is in a position to know if my criticisms were really wrong.... though i can definitely say that eric and i both came up with significant improvements between western and worlds. to be quite honest, the time improvements this year can be mostly attributed to judges doing their job well. it is that simple. i've tried to figure it out a few ways. of course, having less routines in finals, and keeping it to one pool of judges for the entire finals night might have helped... so, once again, thanks to the judges. long hours, less fun. but, i hope, definitely worthwhile. vince From owner-footbag@list.footbag.org Tue Aug 21 01:20:14 2001 Received: (from majordom@localhost) by list.footbag.org (8.9.3/8.9.3) id BAA03650 for footbag-outgoing; Tue, 21 Aug 2001 01:20:14 -0700 X-Authentication-Warning: list.footbag.org: majordom set sender to owner-footbag@footbag.org using -f From: Brenda Solonoski Received: from imo-r10.mx.aol.com (imo-r10.mx.aol.com [152.163.225.106]) by llic.net (8.9.3/8.9.3/Debian 8.9.3-21) with ESMTP id TAA21814 for ; Sat, 18 Aug 2001 19:03:56 -0700 Received: from BSolonoski@aol.com by imo-r10.mx.aol.com (mail_out_v31_r1.4.) id z.ff.ade6f56 (4406) for ; Sat, 18 Aug 2001 22:03:52 -0400 (EDT) Message-ID: Date: Sat, 18 Aug 2001 22:03:51 EDT Subject: [footbag] Hotel rooms for Funtastik To: footbag@footbag.org MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="US-ASCII" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-Mailer: AOL 6.0 for Windows US sub 10532 Sender: owner-footbag@footbag.org Got a few requests from people looking for others to share hotel rooms for the Summer Classic on Labor Day weekend. As a sequel to Casey's mail I'd like to open up the thread "Worlds Lost & Found" as I'm sure many people have lost various things over this week. Like me ;o). I left my black, "moorhead" branded, fleece jacket on the chair I sat on during the freestyle meeting in the hotel. If anyone took it (and this must have happened since it wasn't found by the housekeeping staff), *please* be so honest to write me. I'd even afford a small but valuable reward and pay anything like shipping. Please, be honest, folks!
