I think many visitors/newbies that come across the footbag.org page would simply like to ask a couple of simple questions, rather than to apply for a mailing list. For an example, I do downhill skateboarding, and we have a very successful bulletin board (check out www.NCDSA.com) that is very user friendly, requires very minimal moderating, and, best of all, attracts newcomers. A bulletin board like this can cover footbag/net/freestyle/golf/ and so on, thus ending the need to have mailing lists except for the announce list. Just a thought. hc Happy New Year to everyone out there in footbagland! -- On Sat, 29 Dec 2001 10:49:17 Barry Roberts wrote: >Hi, I'm a young footbag player from Wales, >United Kingdom (where the sport simply hasnt >taken off) and I'm keen to raise my playing >standards. See the Frequently-Asked Questions page on footbag.org relating to the sport in general: http://www.footbag.org/facts/list?sid=941272069 And then you will see from there a link to the official rules of footbag sports at http://ifc.footbag.org/ You probably also want to contact the new IFPA (okay, write me separately) to seek sanctioning which will include help with preparing for the event. Standard events according to the IFC rulebook are: open/women's/intermediate/novice divisions: - 5-minute timed (singles) consecutives - footbag golf - singles freestyle - 1.5-minute routines for intermediate; 2 minutes for open/women's - novice not recommended - freestyle shred - several formats: 45-seconds, 30-seconds, sick 3-trick, etc. - (In your case, see the AFFC in Auckland for help) - doubles freestyle - 3-minute routines for open/women's - 2-minute routines for intermediate - novice not recommended - singles net - doubles net - mixed doubles net (each team of 2 players has one male, one female) Hope that helps. We usually try to have kids competition where they kick for 1 minute or 3 minutes and we don't count drops or right lefts. Try to have some decent footbags, stopwatches, paper and pencils for scoring and maybe some clicker counters. Kids especially appreciate that sort of equipment. Please go to http://www.footbag.com/steve.htm for a resume of his kicking activities: training, tournament production, instruction, footbag design development, footbag program development, and innovation in the sport of footbag. He holds the Trademark for the term Footbag Dance. His style was dubbed by his trainees as "Bloughchi". Additionally, please note he invented the Spyrodancer footbag which will be for sale soon, and he has marketed his friend, Chris Walker's, Sundancer footbag design for over a year. It is for sale in synthetic suede or leather. In 1995 Steve founded footbag.com as an instruction site for which he now consults. The website has approximately 175,000 new users a year accounting for approximately 500,000 hits per year from users throughout the world. At popular request the site began selling footbags in October of 2000. Steve Blough wrote the instructional book "Footbag Dance", published in print in 1984, and in 1996 he published it in footbag.com where it can be read online (with illustrations) or downloaded (text only). He also wrote a research paper about the benefits of eye-foot coordination, according to doctors, etc., which is also published in the site. Steve has been kicking (starting with a rice filled sock) since at least 1972 finding it a fascinating fitness activity which relieved the stress from his Vietnam in-country service and the then recent death of his older brother. Steve is the father of four children, all of whom he has taught to kick a footbag. His oldest son, River, is a professional soccer coach now. As noted in his resume he has taught hundreds of people to kick in the Bloughchi style in the past 30 years. He also developed a drug reduction curriculum featuring footbag kicking for schools and a corporate stress management program. He developed a Code of Conduct for circle kicking which he encourages youthful kickers to adopt and present to school administrations so that kicking can be approved at schools. Currently, he donates footbags and "Footbag Dance" to various non-profit agencies serving disadvantaged children throughout the United States and offers mass quantity discounts to schools to purchase his book and Sundancer footbags for PE programs. In the 70's John Stalberger introduced Steve as "The best freestyle kicker in the world." Just two years ago "Toes" Fitzgerald told Steve that Steve's innovative style in kicking in the 70's (featuring side and back kick predominance as opposed to front and inside kick predominance in kicking to achieve control of the 360 degrees around the kicker) is what kicking today is based upon. Steve and his team of kickers were sponsored by Addidas to the 1982 Hacky Sack Championships and he is the one that announced that the Rod Laver shoe was the best kicking shoe available currently, which he confirmed in his book "Footbag Dance". Right now he is working on development of a training video that breaks down the Bloughchi style and shows exemplary examples of the style which will be available in footbag.com soon. He wants to show the kicking world what "Footbag Dance" and some of his articles are talking about in regard to the Bloughchi style of synergistic kicking. Thank you for your attention in this matter. Sandra O'Connor webmaster@footbag.com
