Here are some highlights (although anyone else that wants to chime in is welcome to do so). If you stop reading here, please note that some videos of the event are available at www.philly-footworks.com First off, the THANKS... First and foremost, A BIG BIG BIG THANKS to my wife Megan. She was absolutely awesome and tireless in hosting our guests and in taking charge of administrative issues during the event. She deserves a big round of applause!! I could not run these things without her. HUGE HUGE thanks to Kenny and Kendall Shults. They both helped me tons in planning the event. Also, they helped me to minimize my losses with a *very* generous donation to the event. Additionally, they donated 5 copies of Tricks of the Trade 2 (these were given as prizes to intermediate and novice competitors). Thanks also to Daryl Genz and Freedom Footbags (http://footbag.tv). 20 awesome footbags to help our cause!!! Thanks to Carol W. and to Lonn Irish for providing some top notch 32 panel bags for prizes. Thanks to Amos Schumacher for the T-Shirt art. Everyone loved the shirts! Thanks to Rex Vending for entirely sponsoring the purchase of event shirts!! www.rexvending.com Thanks to the Adam's Mark Hotel for coming through at the last minute to provide us with a nice shred spot. Thanks to Sunil for coming and hanging with us although he was unable to shred this weekend. It was great to see him! Thanks also to Bob Green, Tu Vu, and Jon Schneider for their judging assistance! HIGHLIGHTS.... We had 59 players sign our waivers... We had a couple slip through the cracks, so we basically topped 60 total shredders at the event. We had players from Montreal, Chicago, all over PA, New Jersey, New York, Maryland, California, Ohio, Michigan... and some areas that I surely missed here. Spectators from the hotel filtered through each day and were very impressed. We also had newpaper reporters stop in from Philadelphia Weekly... They stayed for over an hour!! I'll post the article when I get it. Look out for 13 year old Charlie Johnson. He's built for footbag, and has a great support system since his dad is a great shredder too! I saw Charlie hit ripwalk to torque and tons of other cool combos. Oh boy... I feel old. BAP and other open level players... We had such a nice crew of advanced freestylers. Greg Nelson has all new tricks and shreds for 20 contacts every time he touches the bag. Yacine and Sebastien are both ripping it up. Tu Huge is as fast as ever. Kenny's still hitting new tricks. Peter still makes things look effortless. Adam Keith (sp?) is sooooo solid. Dan Koklow and Brian Parsons let us know that Chicago breeds some crazy good shredders (these two blew my mind). Jon Schneider.. what to say? Jon shreds with a style all his own and I love it! Nick Laroche of Montreal is a serious up and comer... seriously fast. Carolyn Bourgoin stands in with any circle with a smooth style that's really nice to watch. Flash Bevier can just flat out pile up tricks. I could go on and on.. Just check out vids at our site (more will be added shortly): www.philly-footworks.com Newbies and up and comers... There's too many to mention here, but I'll try a little bit.. Jon Bernstein, Kevin McGrogan, and Brandon Isralsky all showed incredible guts and got up and kicked their hearts out in the Novice shred competition. It was great to see such new players up in front of the crowd! Josh Benham, in my opinion, is probably the smoothest player in PA, and maybe on the East Coast (except Peter). I can't wait to see where his game grows to. Nick Miller is really building up his game - lots of nice front side moves. Boy.. this is too hard to mention everyone. We had lots of up and comers that will be playing strong for years to come.. Sorry to anyone that I missed here (but rest assured that I noticed your game at the event and can't wait to see where it goes!). One last note on competition format... The Novice Trick builder was a huge success. It was really fast and easy to judge, and the players really liked the format as it is less intimidating than other formats. I think the spectators had a better time watching this format versus watching novice players try to imitate pros (which at their level is not possible). I really really encourage other directors to take this approach for future novice competitions. Please contact me for more information. Anyhow, I think everyone had a lot of fun. I did. Next year will be bigger and better. Hope to see you there. Shred competition results: Open Shred 30 (conventional rules): 1) Greg Nelson ($125 cash prize) 2) Peter Irish (Bragging rights) 3) Sebastien Duchesne (Slightly less bragging rights) 4) Gordon Bevier 5) Yacine Merzouk 6) the rest of the pack Intermediate Shred 30 (total adds only.. uniques etc. not counted) 1) Josh Benham (Carol Bag, Tricks 2) 2) Carolyn Bourgoin (Freedom footbag, Tricks 2) 3) Charlie Johnson (Tricks 2) 4) Brian Buchan 5) James Hermey 6) the rest of the pack Novice 1) Kevin McGrogan (Lonn Irish Bag, Tricks 2) 2) Josh Bernstein (Freedom footbag, Tricks 2) 3) Brandon Isralsky (Freedom footbag) Thanks! I heard rumors about coordinating dates and trains to make it easier for International footbaggers to attend both Euros and Worlds. Also, have the events been determined? What's the turn-out for mixed doubles looking like? I imagine it will probably be one of the largest turnouts ever for events that usually lack competitors, such as women's doubles and mixed-doubles freestyle. I'm starting to watch airline prices now...feel free to post if anyone notices an awesome deal on plane tix near the dates of the tournament(s). I am hoping to get me an Open level Net partner who will be attending Worlds this year in Prague. Very few of the available folks in my general area will be able to fly to Europe this season and attend. I am hoping and planning to attend this historic footbag event and there is really only one thing better than attending... PLAYING! I finished off last years season playing the best Net of my "carreer", attaining second place honors at both the U.S. Open and the Emerald City Open as well as a first place finish at the Vancouver Open. I am hoping to find someone like myself who may want to travel overseas to attend Worlds but perhaps their usual partner may not be able to make the trip. I am certain that I will be in Prague for Worlds but I am not looking forward to flying all that way (and spending all that money) to wind up on the dreaded "partner list". Please, if you are thinking of going, if you are wavering, on the fence, and looking for a whole lot of digging and setting, I am letting as many people know as I possibly can, I am available =) Reply with an e-mail to steved@rosequarter.com if you are interested. Then the went to Golden , Colorado and attended 1st WFA Certified Instructors Camp, and 1984 Worlds. This is where I met them. They launched their first tournament in 1985 the Footbag Fever Summer Classic in Hershey, Pennsylvania. Brenda , due to demand from new friends in footbag, sold footbags from the camera store she worked at, until in 1987, they opened their own store: Funtastik: Alternative Sport & Fun Shop. Now this tournament is the Funtastik Summer Classic and is 18 years strong in the history of the game and sport ! If not for their efforts, many many world class players would not have had the chance to have fun, share ideas, and help make the inventive contests into strong parts of the evolution of freestyle footbag, let alone other footbag events. This tournament has been the backbone of the sport's development in eastern North America. They have played in, and supported many other events and needs of the sport's growth. There is no question what their combined enthusiasm, encouragement, sponsorship, and promotion of Footbag has done for the growth of the game and sport worldwide. Please join in honoring and respecting their efforts, and pass this note on to all your footbag friends. best regards, Ted Huff , co-director Footbag Hall of Fame Historical Society PS Please support the nomination of others that you respect for their efforts, too !
