Jon like many of us has been a fanatic for the game of footbag for many years. I have no doubt that the game we all love is what it is today at least partly due to the energy that Jon poured into it. Jon was as many of you know my freestyle partner for about 10 years. I owe him so much for his inspiration and dedication to footbag. I am sure that my competitive career would not have been as successful without him and I'm pretty sure there are others who could say the same. Anyway, I have compiled a short list of highlights from Jon's footbag career. Please join me in voting for Jon this year. I believe that his membership in the Hall of Fame is long overdue. Thank you, Dennis Ross Here is information about Jon's accomplishments and contributions to the sport of footbag: - Jon first kicked a footbag in 1978 as a 13 year old in Roseburg, OR at a birthday party for Dave Fraiser. He played a lot back then with his Dad, John Lind. - Jon's first organized footbag event was in 1981 at the Roseburg Footbag Net Championship. He placed 3rd in Singles and 2nd in Doubles net. This event was organized by Greg Cortopossi, Mag Hughes, and Bruce Guettich. - Jon was a member of the NHSA and his WFA membership number is 73. - Jon was a footbag designer and manufacturer of "Deca Footbags" between 1983 and 1989. He also sewed footbags for Flying Clipper (Leathers) and he continues to be a juried crafter for Flying Clipper at the Oregon Country Fair. - Jon did two WFA tours in 1984. The MTV/Mt. Dew tour with Larry Barrett and a school assembly tour with Jeff "The Animal" Johnson. (Having survived a tour with Animal in itself should probably constitute admission to the Hall of Fame.) - Jon introduced Jay Mouldenour, Greg Nelson, and John and Marie Elsner to tournament play. - Jon directed, promoted and helped to organize many tournaments in the 1980s and 1990s. These events were held in Roseburg and Eugene, OR. - Jon is an original member of Free F.L.O.E. (Footbag Lovers Of Eugene), possibly the oldest continuously active footbag club in history beginning in 1984. - Jon was one of the early innovators of freestyle tricks. He helped to design the first comprehensive freestyle scoring system, and he was a pioneer in the event of team freestyle. - Jon promoted Footbag and was represented in the media via TV, radio, newspaper, and magazines throughout the 1980s and 1990s. - He performed in over 100 footbag demonstrations, clinics, and shows. - Jon was featured in the Tricks of the Trade II video as someone who contributed significantly in Singles and Team freestyle. - Some of his many tournament accomplishments include: - Three World Titles in Team Freestyle (1988, 1991, and 1993) and 3 times 2nd Place in Team Freestyle. - Singles Freestyle World Champion in 1986. Jon is one of the few competitors to beat both Kenny Shults and Andy Linder in singles in the 1980s. Rippin' was there too, but still a newbie. - Jon won three National Footbag Freestyle titles in Team Freestyle and another Singles National title in the 1980s. - Jon won as many as 15 Regional titles (NW Regionals and Western Regionals) in Team and Singles Freestyle and he was a competitive golfer throughout his career. - Jon won many events at other tournaments held in the NW. These included freestyle, net, golf, and consecutive events. - He placed 1st, 2nd, or 3rd in every tournament he competed in between 1983 and 1993. - He has competed in over 100 footbag events. - His personal singles consecutive record is 10, 437 and his personal doubles record set with Dennis Ross is 15, 965 at the last World Championship that offered consecutives as an event in 1986. I think it is past time for other friends of the sport, let alone of Jon personally, to join in electing him now. Jon was awesome in what he added to and for the sport of Freestyle Footbag, let alone his other accomplishments, including his tour team involvement. Jon Lind did make a significant difference in the growth of the game and sport, and that is the key criteria for nomination and election to his sport's hall of fame. He was an innovator, and a champion, and should be honored by his peers for all of that. He may not have been active nationally when the Big Add Posse was started, but he surely was a step forward in freestyle innovation in his time, and surely was part of the inspiration that led to what is freestyle as we know it today. Please join in thanking and honoring him now. If the old NHSA had not been able to get tours set up by Jack West, how would thousands of U.S. kids ever have known about the game, or even the twinkle of inspiration for starting a new sport ? Many owe some gratitude to him for giving the game a chance to present itself via the early tour teams, when others laughed and thought that this little beanbag kicking was a joke. I would humbly like to nominate Jack West for the Footbag Hall of Fame this year, and hope that others that knew his contribution in the early years, would support an honor , in his memory, that can be shared with his family. Any support of this nomination must be directed, like all nomination support for anyone this year, to kenshults@aol.com before March 31st. For myself personally, I know that Jon was a huge influence on my game way back when the HackySack/Frisbee Festivals were happening. Jon Lind was touring (through Michigan circa., 1984(?- old age)) with Larry Barrett and proceeded to amaze me with his freestyle skills. By todays standards, people might think that what he was doing was not that phat compared to the Big Add Posse. But, and this is big, in the early days people were freestyling with Hackysacks and they were using shoes that were laced in the old style fashion (normal). He was also doing some team freestyle, which I definitely liked. Frisbee was a huge factor for me when putting together some of the coops that Greg and I would use in the future, but everything has a beginning and that was my beginning in team freestyle. Seeing Jon and Dennis together was another level altogether. It validated in my mind that team freestyle could be fun. I also remember Jon at the dorms in Golden in 1985 in Colo. He was very supportive, and he truly demonstrated the values learned at the Footbag Training Camp. Footbag is a cooperative sport like no other out there and Jon fit this bill to a tee. The Northwest really had a huge impact on footbag and Jon Lind with Dennis Ross showed me that freefloe is a tremendous amount of fun. I could just ramble on, but what I really would like to see is Jon Lind in the Footbag Hall of Fame.
