I just went through travelocity.com and got a round trip ticket for about $678 from Denver to Frankfurt leaving July 24th, returning Aug 12th. This is about half the price of last time I checked, and I'm glad I waited. The carrier was United Airlines. It turned out to be cheaper to go through travelocity than to take the IFPA discount this time. See you in Prague. Peace. Daryl Genz PS On the travelocity site you have to go to the "flights" page and Make sure that you mark: "My dates are flexible" -- it seems the price won't show up otherwise. At least they got the terminology somewhat right... :-) The article appeared in May 24th edition of the Philadelphia Daily News Bob Riefer www.philly-footworks.com -------- THE WORD ON 'HACK': GET ME REWRITE! SHOW TO BE BASED IN PHILLY COULD USE A BIT OF TINKERING BEFORE WE GET all excited about the latest "good news" dangled to us from network TV-land - that the new series called "Hack" will be based and filmed in Philadelphia - let's do a reality check. Frankly, we're not convinced this show has legs. And the city could use one, since the presence of a long-running TV show can pump prestige and big dough into the local economy of the city where it's based. Look what "Cheers" did for Boston. And what "Laverne & Shirley" did for Milwaukee. Well, OK, maybe let's not look there. The premise of "Hack," at least for the time being, is that David Morse (who actually lives here) plays a disgraced ex-cop trying to win back his family and self-respect by solving crimes while driving a cab. Clearly, this is not a reality show. Not with a cab driver who is a native English speaker who grew up in the city and actually knows how to find the Reading Terminal Market. Here's another thing that strains our credulity: The Morse character is supposed to have been fired for being a bad cop. We know that would not happen here. There are television shows with less credible premises, but why not create one that could actually work? So here are a few ideas that we'd pitch for improvements to the show. The advantage is you wouldn't even have to change the name. "News Hack": In this combination sitcom and cooking show, David Morse plays a journalist who favorably "reviews" restaurants owned by his friends in exchange for a lifetime of free food. Each week, he's put into situations that risk this sweetheart arrangement. "Political Hack": Each week, David Morse gets an infusion of walking-around money, which he has to spend in one episode in a desperate race to land a cushy well-paid desk job with a city authority or agency. Like "Seinfeld," this is a show where nothing happens. Special guest stars include Vince "of Darkness" Fumo, Buddy Cianfrani, Jimmy Tayoun and Marty Weinberg. "Computer Hack": Each week, David Morse creates a new computer virus that threatens the U.S. economy. In each episode, Kiefer Sutherland has 24 hours to disable the virus. "Hackysack": David Morse plays a dreadlocked unwashed twentysomething who uses a small bean-filled footbag to solve crimes. Sorry. I feel strongly about this. I think it's worth reading all the way through though.. Also, I'm NOT talking about me (what I do is a smaaaaaaalllllllllll drop in the bucket compared to MANY of the big players in supporting the sport) so this is not a self serving post. Just observations. This is also NOT directed at anyone in particular.. Those of you doing your part are absolved of any guilt. The rest of you can take this for whatever it's worth, or delete the message. No offensive replies will be considered or read, so don't even bother trying that. Rant on. I've noticed that there's a core group of players/retired players/friends of footbag that do the bulk of work in supporting our sports. This is only natural, but I think there are some simple things that everyone should feel obligated (yes, obligated) to do to help them out. These are really simple things.. If 5% of you actually read this and take these actions (and other actions) it will make a huge difference. Really. I'm not trying to be mean. Here are some examples: 1) When Steve Goldberg emails out for help for Worlds, reply to him (if at all possible) offering your minimal assistance. Running any event is very complicated, time consuming, and thankless (even worse than thankless in many cases) - Worlds is more complicated, more time consuming, and infinitely more thankless (sounds funny) than any other event. Event organizers don't have time to email you, call you, and beg you to help. Just help. Others are doing the bulk of the work for you and every little bit of assistance you can offer is much appreciated. If you don't help, who will? We can't always let someone else be the helper. 2) When tournament organizers ask you to pre-register for any event, do it. You're going to pay the money any way, just get it over with. Tournaments almost always lose money, and one of the main reasons is that the tournament director usually needs to over-plan for the event (buying t-shirts etc.) because nobody takes 2 minutes to sign up/mail in their payment. 3) If you don't compete at events, buy a t-shirt anyway. The $2 profit that the director earns from you on that sale is small, but it makes a difference when multiplied by a bunch of players. Besides, it ensures that the director won't have to "eat" the cost of unused T's. 4) Don't let your local club be run, organized, financed, everything by one or two players. Get involved. If your club organizer asks you for help, help them. Try to help them promptly (else they'll just do the work themselves). A donation of $10 once in awhile so that your club organizer isn't the only one losing money is a nice gesture, but offering a little bit of time is an even nicer gesture. You won't get recognized on TV for this gesture, but your efforts WILL be noticed. 5) Be nice and helpful. This includes being nice to spectators, being nice on forums (you all know who you are), being nice at events, and so on. If you're at an event and some poor guy/gal is struggling all by him/herself to put up a net set.. Stop stretching for a second and help him/her out. Help carry the water jug. Clap for competitors.. This is all basic stuff for most, but just keep it in mind. It's easy to take the "footbag way of life" for granted.. But there are people working their butts off behind the scenes. And all these people are just as busy (or way busier) than you are. I could go on, but I'm actually interested to hear what some of you have to say. I can predict who will reply but am hoping to hear from some new voices too. Rant off. Shred on. Here's a few more... 6) Shred (or play net) with everyone you can. 7) When you win a footbag at a tournament, and it's not up to your high standards of "what a footbag should be," give it to the next kid that shows interest. You'll make that kids day, and at least the footbag has a chance of living its footbag destiny of being kicked (rather than being shelved and forgotten). 8) Make sure the club you are associated with, hosts *at least* one tournament a year, no matter how small and unambitious it may seem. It is easier than it looks, and if you have questions, just email anyone who has run an event before... You may find us surprisingly accessible, friendly and helpful. Also IFPA is working on tools to help run events, which should make things even easier. Keep kicking! See ya! Scott Davidson Education Director, International Footbag Players' Association, Inc. I've gotten a bunch of emails from newer players saying things such as "I can't do much because I'm a newbie". This couldn't be farther from the truth! You can attend events, you can NOT self serve, you can even do almost anything on the list below.. Just because you're new to the game or young doesn't mean anything... Look at someone like Caleb Abraham.. He was a newbie not long ago and he started running his own events and shredding all the time.. Now he's got a great annual event built up, he's a rising star in shred, and he finds time to be a conscientious guest at events... The basic concepts here are not rocket science (especially if Caleb can master them.. Just joking.. Couldn't resist :-) That's it. Really. It was awesome. I'll be brief as it's not my place to tell you all about it.. Reply to the list with your personal highlights from the event... But here's some things to fill you in a bit. - Tons of new/younger players. Lookout.. Some of these players are scary already... - Old friends in abundance - great overall tunout - TV crews on hand all weekend - great weather - Tons of top pros (Tuan Vu, Eric Wulf, Manu, Chris Seibert, Peter Irish, Vince Bradley, Scott Davidson, Caleb Abraham, Jamie Lepley, Carol W. Steve G. etc. etc. etc. sorry to any that I missed) - Dropless intermediate routine by Josh Benham. GROUND ZERO!!!!! Go Josh!! - Scott vs. Peter in freestyle routines finals. Woah. Intense. I hope video of these two routines end up on the web soon. - A really cool game.. It's like a huge pinball machine that you kick a bag at.. Hard to explain but it was cool.. - Legends... Rick Kaufman and a bunch of the other pioneers (I'm so sorry but names escape me right now) were there.. Very inspiring. - Awesome barefoot shredding and guitar playing by Matt Cross.. He played live for Carol W. in the first round of open routines.. That was cool.. I also watched him shred guiltless barefoot.. Blurry whirls etc. Nice. - Clean triple atw (on video tape) by Caleb. - Watching Steve G. lose multiple 4 square games was the highlight of highlights. :-) Just kidding.. Steve, you're good at 4 square, I'll admit it. OK, that's all I can brain storm right now.. It was so fun. It really was. Vince and Peter and all your crew.. You all are awesome! Thanks for such a great weekend! Thanks Vince! And to Peter Irish for doing an amazing job researching and contacting dozens of footbag legends. Peter put together one of the most fascinating event programs I have ever seen - not only did it list the names and accomplishments of 36 east coast footbag legends, he actually contacted everyone to tell what they are doing today. Incredible! When we lived in Oregon (the birthplace of footbag) I feel like I was able to really connect with the history of the game and the great people who have brought it this far. It did my heart good to see that same love in the east. Special thanks to all the footbag pioneers who made it to the event. The greatness of footbag is due to the greatness of the people involved. I love this game! On a side note, as I was leaving the awards party Sunday night, I stopped to thank the camera crew from the Game Show Network. The director spent several minutes absolutely gushing to me about how impressed she was with footbag. She spoke of the "amazing athletes" and the "extreme sportsmanship" and comradery. One piece of advice she gave to me: she noticed in all her interviews that people always refer to themselves and others as "footbag players". She really believed that we are athletes and should call ourselves "footbag athletes". Something to think about... Thanks again to everyone who came out!!!
