The Dance with the Dragonfly beginners tournament came together pretty nicely on November 16th. Making the club official a few months ago, I decided that the best way to publicize and promote the sport on campus was to hold an event. It was for beginners only and was not all that official. -Two friends and I were the judges. Eight people competed in our campus center which attracted a good amount of spectators throughout the day. Thanks to a subsidy by the Student Government Association, the entry fee was only $3 and everyone who entered walked away with a footbag worth a lot more than that. (either a Cole Rainbow, 8 or 14 panel bag). Results: Consecutives 1st. Eric Heisler 2nd Jeremy Smith (Overall champion) 3rd Paul Mandel Freestyle 1st Jeremy Smith 2nd St. John Hill 3rd Gabe Pinilla After the event Vince Bradley, Tu Vu and Tuan Vu represented for FAKE and put on professional freestyle routine demo's. We then had a freestyle shred for the participants, judges and pro's. Tuan hit a triple dexterity trick that to my knowledge had never been hit before. I'm not the most qualified to announce or describe it, but I'll try... The S & M Thrasher: Right toe set, in /out dex with left foot, double in /out dex with right foot, left toe catch. I am not sure of this description or the name. Tuan? The S & M actually stands for St. Mary's. Tuan was hitting this trick and taking it further this weekend at the Farewell Ninja shred in College Park MD. In addition to prizes, the school also gave us funds to pay for the FAKEsters trip down, snacks throughout the day and 4 pizza's at the days end. Big Thanks go to... St. Mary's College of MD, Eric Cole & Cole's Footbags, Juliet Pendray, Vince Bradley, Tuan Vu, Tu Vu, and Jim and Steve for this list-serv which has kept me in touch with the sport. So I forwarded him the message from this listserve, and asked him if he had anything to do with it. Here is his reply. I just wanted to give credit where credit is due. Sorry it's a bit long, but pretty cool. -Vijay Vijay, Wow, I think I might have... I'll forward you an email I sent back in July about them putting it on the show. We would like people to send footbag jokes (no matter how bad), human interest stories related to footbag, footbag "quotes" (we especially like the ones pertaining to our products), etc. We eventually will ask for you authors to submit articles of footbag interests (this will not be a place to post event information or results however). We hope you all will take a little time to send a little piece of your footbag history, comedy, ideas for articles, or your thoughts on what you think might make the site interesting enough to keep coming back to for information and fun! Please don't post your responses to the list but rather send them direct to me at Freefloe@continet.com Thanks for your time and hope to hear from you soon. My name is Hung Chang and I am writing to the list for the first time. I been kicking with BAFL (Bay Area Footbag League) in San Jose for about two years now. Since then, our San Jose club membership has increased slowly. I would like to know how your club is set up. 1)# of players and players' level 2)pattern or rules of rotation? how do players of different level interact? 3)doubles or singles? 4)pro/am ? 5)beginners instructions or coaching? drills? 6)negatives? what don't you like about your current format? (see #2) 7)wish for changes? what? 8)location? same spot or different spot? 9)attracting new players? how? 10)how often do you kick per week? 11)is the club net oriented or freestyle or golf or others. FYI The San Jose 'club' have about 12 kickers (8 players are open and 5 are intermediates with varying abilities). We usually don't freestyle or golf. Mostly, we play doubles net. In the summer, we play singles on weekday evening (once per week). For doubles, it is Thu evenings and Sat afternoons. We kick at one location only. We do have options of kicking in SF and Santa Cruz. In the past two years, I saw many novice players quit footbag net after playing for a short time. Our court rule is that the 'winners stay on' and you have to call the game you wish to play. IMO, this isn't the best rule. Au contraire, thanks to many of you making the all-important phone call to ask ESPN what happened, they got the message! They did in fact show the program last Sunday -- and it was great! The show mostly focussed on net (I know you'll be happy about that, Juliet :-)), but there was some coverage of freestyle (though they mostly failed to show any of the real stuff). They chose to focus in on Kenny Shults (no surprise!) and tracked his progress through the semifinal match and final match in singles. They never showed any doubles net -- unfortunately since many think that's where it's at for TV. Anyway, it was still really good footage and you couldn't help but wonder watching it how big this sport really was since it looked DAMN BIG from the footage. The site in Montreal looked awesome from the footage on finals day, and this sport looked really well organized and sponsored. I think that's a good thing -- it'll help us get a leg up for the next time, and the time after that, etc. The more people we show that this sport is worthy, the more respect we'll get and the more chances we'll get to do more big events! Good job, AQAF, WFA, Chris Ott, and the rest of the staff, for making the damn thing look so good, and to Kenny and all the top players for giving the cameras something to focus on! :-) Steve From owner-footbag@eniac.yak.net Wed Dec 18 17:43:38 1996 Received: (from majordom@localhost) (fnord) by eniac.yak.net (8.7.5/8.6.9) id RAA09034 for footbag-outgoing; Wed, 18 Dec 1996 17:42:56 GMT Received: (from bin@localhost) (fnord) by eniac.yak.net (8.7.5/8.6.9) id RAA09030 for footbag@eniac.yak.net; Wed, 18 Dec 1996 17:42:53 GMT Received: from swingert@creighton.edu () via =-=-=-=-=-= for footbag@majordomo.footbag.org (9027) Received: from Market.NET (Market.NET [140.174.206.2]) (fnord) by eniac.yak.net (8.7.5/8.6.9) with ESMTP id RAA09025 for ; Wed, 18 Dec 1996 17:42:53 GMT Received: from mailjay.creighton.edu (mailjay.creighton.edu [147.134.2.15]) by Market.NET (8.7.6/8.7.3) with SMTP id JAA11013 for ; Wed, 18 Dec 1996 09:42:49 -0800 Received: from p1-39.top.net by mailjay.creighton.edu with SMTP (1.38.193.5/16.2) id AA27146; Wed, 18 Dec 1996 11:45:37 -0600 Message-Id: <3.0.1.32.19961218113314.00678c04@bluejay.creighton.edu> X-Sender: swingert@bluejay.creighton.edu X-Mailer: Windows Eudora Light Version 3.0.1 beta 4 (32) Date: Wed, 18 Dec 1996 11:33:19 -0600 To: footbag@footbag.org From: Sean Wingert Subject: [footbag] Northwest High Skooled Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Sender: owner-footbag@footbag.org Good News Footbaggers, My brother Ashley is the assistant director of his high school's video production facilities here in Omaha, NE. Every morning, he and his crew broadcast various events, academia, and lunch information to about 1000+ students. Well, when the lunch menu section is aired, the text is always vertically scrolled with a recorded video backdrop. So, this morning before school, I went to the video department with my brother and the RAW SHRED footbag tape. When the section for lunch came up, the video backdrop was Kenny Shults' very first rally and then Tuan Vu's. So, over 1,000 students saw two BAP members for a duration of about 30-40 seconds and got skooled! I know this isn't ESPN, but for Omaha, this is a huge leap forward :) Thanks Everyone, Sean Wingert (CUFC Pres.) Thanks are extended to all participants and spectators. The organisers were gratified to note that the event was covered in a report on page 2 of the local newspaper (*The West Australian*). We believe that, although still comparatively small when compared to other "mainstream" competitions, tournaments such as *The Commemorative Classic* are helping to raise the profile of footbagging in Australia. We hope that in subsequent years the tournament will expand with ever increasing interest in the sport and that, down the track, the tournament might also encompass Net and Golf. I'm from Sydney but now living in Florida. Been here for 6 years. In 1985 I was involved in the 'attempt' by Michael Cummins to launch "Hacky Sack" in Sydney. Scott "Mag" Hughes and Lisa McDaniel came out to publicise it. A "Footbug" (VW painted as a Hacky Sack, [copied from UK]) was used for transport. Had a great time for 5 months but didnt make a cent or push the sport too much! We toured limited schools and shopping centers and had a magazine 'Hacky Sack Yak' (only one issue done!). In '86 the first (and only) NSW championships were held in the west of Sydney. Only 8 competitors but OK nonetheless. How many competitors did you get? Are Hacky Sacks (or any footbags) now available in Australia? Before my departure in 1990 I did some work for the guy who brought Sipa Sipas to Sydney. He bought 30,000 and had no idea how to sell them. A non-event basically. Flying disc was huge in Perth, with the Aust. champions at distance, DDC, and ultimate there a few years back. Is the scene still alive? Anyway congrats on the consecutive title. How many kicks in 5 mins? It would be interesting to also see these stats. ALAN, Florida, USA. (Thank God for those pigs) Good hamstring excersises are lunges. Simply take deep lengthy steps making sure your knees never pass your toes (so as not to harm your knees) Great for the hamstrings. Also, keeping your legs straight, but don't lock your knees, bend to touch your toes. Also a great hamstretch. Believe me when I say this will beef up those hams. We try to get together to kick during the winter, but finding space is becoming a problem. Anyway, I suggested small groups at malls and then the idea came to put on a demonstration at the malls. It would seem as if I have been put in charge of organizing it, and I would like some help from anyone with prior experience in this sort of thing. I have a few questions I'd like answered, but any other comments that might help us out would be great. I've never done anything like this before, so I'm not even sure where to begin. How should the demonstration go, as in what should we demonstrate? There are a few people in town who can hit tricks most of the time, I can do many tricks, but miss most as often as I hit them. How should I go about getting the malls permission? What kind of promotion should we do before hand to make sure some people show up to watch? How long should we plan it to be, so as to get enough stuff across the the people standing there, but not to bore them with our antics? I'm sure other questions will pop up as we get this off the ground, and I'm sure I'll be back to ask, but for now thats it. Again, any help is greatly appreciated. Thank-you kindly! MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Sender: owner-footbag@footbag.org Some of my friends and I have recently taken up net. We got the net, footbags and rule book, but there is one issue we would like clarification on. I know that when you serve, the footbag has to land in the opposite quadrant from you, i.e. from your right side to your opponents right side, but we were wondering if the bag is suppose to be traveling in a direction so that its momentum would carry it past the plane of the court. In table tennis, your serve is suppose to be able to pass the end of the table before it can fall off the sides of the table. I believe this was done so that you couldn't serve to the corner closest to the net and have the ball fall off the table before your opponent had a chance to return it. I'm just wondering if a similar serve in net is legal, or if it is suppose to be like table tennis and pass the end of the court (or at least have the direction and momentum to suggest it would pass the end of the court). We've seen no reference to this in the rule book, and so we are assuming that the serve is legal as long as it lands in the correct quadrant. We're not nearly good enough for this to be a real problem, but we are curious as to anyone's thoughts on the matter. Thanks, Matt p.s. I hope this message wasn't too confusing. In table tennis, the ball is also allowed to bounce! In footbag, the bag is "dead" if it hits the ground. And it's "out" if it lies beyond the boundaries when it touches. So it should be pretty clear that on service, if the bag is served so that it would fall outside the court, it would be "out" and the receiving player would be a fool to kick it. Does that make sense? So, the answer is that the serve should be done so that the bag will fall within the boundaries of the receiver's quadrant. >We've seen no >reference to this in the rule book, and so we are assuming that the serve >is legal as long as it >lands in the correct quadrant. Well, I don't remember the exact wording, but it says something about the serve having to be into the diagonally opposing quadrant of the court. "Into" means into, not beyond. :-) Also, to clarify, if the serve is bad and goes long or wide, the receiving player still has the option of taking it. If he/she kicks the serve, regardless of whether it's in our out, the bag is in play at that point and it no longer matters whether the serve was in or out. Steve
