Yeah, although I thought it was kind of demeaning. :-) But it was funny -- at one point, these kids attending an Earth Day celebration at a national park attacked the car of the main characters who had killed a whooping crane by kicking footbags at the car. Those hippies yelled, "You destroyers of the earth!", and then they proceeded to squash the eggs of another bird's nest and ruined some shrubbery at the park while kicking all the leather footbags at the car. Kinda like those Earth First!ers who do the planet harm while protesting. I certainly don't want the sport of footbag to be associated with this kind of people. ______________________________________________________________________ Matt P. Sender: owner-footbag@footbag.org Hi, everyone. Footbag WorldWide just got another rave review in a printed book and CD-ROM. The new issue of Luckman Interactive's "World Wide Web Yellow Pages" gave us: ***** (5 Stars, their highest rating) and the following review: "The Footbag WorldWide Web site aims to be a global source of information about the sport of footbag. And it does just that. That's right, put on your shoes and get ready for sections such as Equipment (information about shoes, footbags, nets, and rules of the sport), the Event List (updated listings of footbag tournaments, festivals, and gatherings around the world), Multimedia (GIF/JPEG photos, MPEG/QuickTime video clips, and sounds), and Results (information, reviews, and results of recent footbag tournaments). This site has the combination of content and flair that one might expect from a high-profile sport such as professional basketball or baseball." Just thought you'd like to know. :-) See for more info on the book and CD-ROM. Steve P.S. No need for public congratulations -- I am not fishing! I just want people to be aware of how we are doing. We've been working really hard on plans and just this week we got the ord from the parks and recreation department that everything squared away for the site we wanted. Unforunately, construction is forcing us from using the site we've used the last two years, but this new park is going to be just as good, if not better. It's about 3 blocks from the beach, there's plenty of free parking, and (interest willing) it might even accomodate a round of golf. We're not too sure we want to go that far, though. The rest of our plans are turning out just as well. I'm especially pleased that we're able to hold this event entirely in Hermosa Beach. If you've ever looked for Hermosa Beach on a map of Southern California, you'd know what a cool thing that is. Hermosa Beach is this tiny spec of a city just south of the LAX airport, right between Manhattan Beach and Redondo Beach. I don't think the entire thing is more than two miles wide in any direction. This means that everything that's important to the tournament is going to be walking distance from each other. This includes the site, the hotel (we've got three picked out, including one right on the beach), the Friday evening hang spot, the Saturday party spot, and the warm Southern California Beaches right next to the Pacific Ocean. And all of this is just a short bus ride from the airport. If I didn't already live here and was planning on coming down for the event, I'd definitely skip the rental car and plan on bumming rides and walking when that didn't work out. The longest trek would be about 1 mile. It's not that bad. Add that to the fact that we plan on feeding you lunch on Saturday and Sunday (and probably Saturday night too) and this event is one heck of a deal. (Bargain hunters, check out the hotel list for the youth hostel or the beach house that sleeps 10!) The event is going to feature both Freestyle and Net competitions. In freestyle, we plan to run a 45 second shred competition. In net, we've got Ruler of the Court, Doubles (Open and Intermediate), and Mixed Doubles. Last year's event featured a bit of the old and a bit of the new. The freestyle champion was Ryan Mulrony, this year's Intermediate Freestyle champion, participating in his first footbag tournament ever. The winners of the Ruler of the Court competition was Alf, and Brent and Alf together took the doubles title. (The results used to be online, but somehow they seem to have drifted away. Oh well.) .. Here's the low-down on the hotels for the event: Hotel Hermosa (310) 318-6000 Rooms with King sized bed: $59 + tax Rooms with two beds, ocean view: $79 + tax This is just 1/4 mile from the site. Sea Sprite (310) 376-6933 Prices vary. $79 for a room for two with a single queen sized bed. $95 - $105 for a larger room that opens up onto the beach $235 - $250 for a beach house that sleeps 4 - 10 people (!) Additional $6 per person for more than 2 people. In 1989, the World Footbag Association (WFA) organized a formal study on footbag which was conducted through the Department of Exerscise and Sport Science at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City, Utah. This study tested 13 top footbag athletes. The results focused on oxygen uptake, heart rate, and lactic acid. The results showed that oxygen uptake, heart rate, and lactic acid during all competitive events recognized by the WFA and the International Footbag Advisory Board (except footbag golf) exceeded the American College of Sports Medicine's guidelines for exercise intensity (60% to 90% max.). This qualified footbag play at the elite level to be called an "aerobic" sport. The term aerobic naturally implies that the activity is endurance-oriented, oxygen-consuming, and calorie-burning. If you ask anyone who plays footbag (even at the recreational level) they would agree 100% with these findings. In fact, they would probably add a few extra's like it's great for developing balance, rhythm, eye-foot coordination, timing, leg strength, equal use of both sides of the body, etc., etc., etc. So if you want my opinion, take up footbag-it's good for mind, body and sole. Kickingly yours, Bruce Guettich WFA Director P.S. It mentioned footbirdie was extremely popular in China in the 50s? or 60s?. During the height of its popularity, kids from different schools would have "footbirdie net" competion. One interesting thing the book mentioned was that a "sand bag/sac" was also use for kicking. (so much for footbag as an American invention) As a kid in Taiwan, I remembered seeing "footbirdie freestyle" as part of a circus act on TV. For the "footbirdie net", how big is the court? how many people per side? Hung p.s. rumor has it that "footbirdie net" is still played in China today. p.s. I would give my right leg for any tape coverage of the above. ______________________________ Reply Separator _________________________________ Subject: [footbag] Sci-fi Channel and Footbag Author: "Mario A. If any of you don't know my pal Dan Kramer (not to be confused with Steve Kremer of BAP fame) then watch GOOD MORNING AMERICA tomorrow , CBS, 6-9 am. Well, you shouldn't sit in front of your tube for three hours, it's about a total of five seconds. It's one of those spots they show before or after commercials (I think.) We were kicking in Washington Square Park, and this camera crew came up to us and said, " we're taking video spots for good morning america, can we get a shot of a couple of you?" I was feeling shy and not very photogenic, so I nominated D and my buddy Carlos. There were about five shots taken with D hitting double atw, butterflies, and some cool tricks, but considering the camera guy wasn't prepared for the movement, they had to reshoot and reshoot. Dan was exhausted by the time they got a good shot, so it was a couple of mirages or something, still, not bad for free publicity. THe Auckland Hack Sac Champs organiser is hanging up his sac for the last time. He has organised the competition for the past 5 years, including the last two held at Mission Bay, but has decided to move on. "It involves arranging a reserve, stage, sponsors, prizes, posters, T-shirts and judges. When u become that absorbed in administration, you lose the passion." Besides, he says, hacky sac is losing its appeal. "Hacky is a summer game and we haven't had a summer, it's bleak and we've had a coupla of cyclones." The 1997 championship attracted 40 competitors to Mission Bay Reserve. Hundreds watched them perform tricks such as hacks (passing the sac around a group), nicks (passing the sac with different parts of the body), toe-knees, parrots (catching or bouncing the sac off the neck) and rainbows (a curving pass). Mr Jacobi says hacky sac was around for years, but took off about 5 years ago growing out of the fringe alternative and beach communities. "Its been taken over by clean cut kids who are serious about turning it into a competitive sport. You always find with novelties that they will have a five-year life span when there will be phenominal growth. The reason hacky will survive is because these kids get serious about it." "Unfortunately there probably isn't going to be a competition next year, unless someone else organises it." He says the competitions at Muriwai Beach were informal and unstructured affairs between friends.
