I'm not sure the current competition divisions (open, women, intermediate) are really an accurate way to group similar players. I think instead we need to have divisions for those who have lives outside of footbag and those who don't. I've heard of people who kick 2 or 3 hours per day. Personally, I'm doing good to come up with 3 hours per week to play footbag. How can kickers like myself keep up competitively? Something must be done. Actually, instead of different divisions, perhaps we should change the events in order to level the playing field for those of us with children and/or demanding careers. Here are some of my ideas: 1. Toddler obstacle golf - set up the course same as regular footbag golf, but set loose a group of toddlers on the course. Parents of said toddlers are allowed to encourage their child to "pick that ball up and give it back to the nice man" or "please bring that pretty basket over here by mommy." 2. Timed change & consecutive: Timed consecutives would involve first changing from your work clothes into footbag clothes & then doing as many kicks as possible before the time is up. Another variation could involve changing a baby's diaper & then kicking. 3. mixed double freestyle & kid juggle: All mixed doubles freestyle teams would be given a small child to pass back & forth as well as the footbag. Pass the kid as you receive the footbag. 4. new net rules: competitors with small children allowed as many time-outs as needed to tend to said children. competitors working on business projects with looming deadline, allowed timeouts for as long as necessary to complete project or for business conversations on cell phone. For other competitors - no time outs allowed. That's all I can think of off the top of my head. I'm sure there are other reasonable changes that could be made in addition to these. But at least this would be a start. Any more ideas? This is Ann, writing a letter strikingly similar to one i wrote last year around this same time, trying to find a partner for women's doubles net at Worlds. My dilemma here in lovely and exciting Rockville, Maryland should be clear - lots of good kicking - but very little contact with kickers of the female persuasion. As such, I find myself in the enviable position of resorting to email to find a partner... anyway, (and I'm going to be really picky here because the chances of finding a partner are so slim anyway) I'm looking for a female who rips her knees apart going for digs, is very competetive and WANTS TO WIN, and has the skills to make it happen (and she must do roll spikes too). So, I expect to be receiving a barrage of responses over the next couple days, so don't be upset if I can't respond to every letter right away. The highly technical selection process begins somewhere between now and the morning of womens doubles in Portland. Thanks for keeping focused through this whole laborious letter - NOW, are you wondering when I'm going to talk about Boston? Or did you think that was just a strange error on my part? Or did you not even notice that I included boston in my subject line (see above)? Anyway, probably no one is reading anymore, but I will be moving to Boston, MA in Aug or sept, and I want to find some net players. Or, I guess some freestylers if they are willing to try net. I know I've read some other letters from people in Boston... so please write!!!!! I think I woke up the whole neighborhood swearing up a storm. The doctor looked at my dirty, nasty Lavers and asked if the nail went through the shoe before going into my foot. When I said, "yes," he said, "uh-oh." He told me that I had to look out for weird symptoms like a red streak through my foot or excessive pus. He was more worried about how unsanitary my shoes were than that rusty nail. :) I got a tetanus shot, so I might just live. P.S. I had a great time at ECO.....I played net for the first time ever. But instead of going to the park during the listed time, I called Heather Thomas directly. It was pouring rain, so we went to a health club and kicked "indo". The scoop on the grass is this: last year the city tore up the park and installed a fancy smancy underground irrigation system which will allow the park to recover from the sound thrashings it received all summer long within two weeks. The Rose Festival's Fun Center which is food tents, clydesdales, rides and all kinds of stuff ended on June 8th and is now being carted out. So... we are supposed to have grass. I have spoken to the Rose Festival and they know the importance of grass to our sport. If the weather is kind and the city planners and planters did it right, we may have grass. But there are no guarentees. At the time it felt as if my whole eyeball had been taken along for the ride. jooooliet From owner-footbag@eniac.yak.net Fri Jun 13 23:33:05 1997 Received: (from majordom@localhost) (fnord) by eniac.yak.net (8.7.5/8.6.9) id XAA02648 for footbag-outgoing; Fri, 13 Jun 1997 23:32:04 GMT Received: (from bin@localhost) (fnord) by eniac.yak.net (8.7.5/8.6.9) id XAA02644 for footbag@eniac.yak.net; Fri, 13 Jun 1997 23:32:02 GMT Received: from mike138@capecod.net () via =-=-=-=-=-= for footbag@majordomo.footbag.org (2641) Received: from Market.NET (Market.NET [140.174.206.2]) (fnord) by eniac.yak.net (8.7.5/8.6.9) with ESMTP id XAA02639 for ; Fri, 13 Jun 1997 23:32:02 GMT Received: from mailhost.capecod.net (mailhost.capecod.net [204.255.214.5]) by Market.NET (8.8.5/8.8.5) with ESMTP id QAA00503 for ; Fri, 13 Jun 1997 16:32:05 -0700 Received: from mkeymont (mar36.capecod.net [205.230.14.36]) by mailhost.capecod.net (8.8.5/8.7.3) with ESMTP id TAA27447 for ; Fri, 13 Jun 1997 19:31:58 -0400 (EDT) Message-Id: <199706132331.TAA27447@mailhost.capecod.net> From: "Mike Keymont" To: Subject: [footbag] Java Chat Date: Fri, 13 Jun 1997 19:28:47 -0400 X-MSMail-Priority: Normal X-Priority: 3 X-Mailer: Microsoft Internet Mail 4.70.1157 MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Sender: owner-footbag@footbag.org Hi all, Is anyone else going to hackman's chat at 8 central tonight? What we lacked in sunshine and pristine turf was completely off set by a very supportive group of sponsors. They are so worthy and deserving of our praise I must list just a few of this years favorites out of 22. The largest monetary support came from adidas/Pastime Sports. The cool shirt was designed by Steve Dusablon and Full Sail carried half of the tab. Hacky Sack kicked in $350 and Courtesy Ford $150 plus a cargo van. Major prizes were 3 Southwest Airlines tickets and 3 Freestyle Snakeboards, gift certificates from Caplans Sportsworld and Think Good Thoughts. All were fed by Whole Foods who donated the yummiest organic apples, bananas, necterines, avocados, oranges, carrots, lettuce and sweet onions, with an assist from JJ Jones who delivered them. Wholesome and Hearty - Gardenburgers, Fred Meyers - buns and bagels, and Kendall’s Costco card all helped. We were clothed by Rainbow Imports, Teva Sandals, and seven pairs of choice Vans for the staff. The Open Singles finals was de javu from two years ago, Kenny stepped on the court with Randy Mulder and the all during the thunderous battle rain poured down. Bizarre. The female recipient of the Scholarship to Worlds is Christy Rapp. There are a number of candidates for the male recipient - the decision will be annouced soon. Due to draconian establishmentism however, net was moved and moved and finally cancelled. The good folks at the parks depatment rescinded our ability to put fingernail sized holes in the earth at the last minute. The Albanites, Jersenians, and Pennsylvanians who drove all the way here to get in some time five feet off the ground took off to the moon-drenched shores of Newer Jersey. Essentially, it's been scratched. Most biggest apologies to all who got screwed. At least they got T-shirts. There was an actual explosion friday night, in the form of Kevin Reimer getting smacked in the face with a random piece of street or glass or something flying out of traffic. Fortunately, Kevin was uninjured and we made our way to the most expensive diner you'd ever seen. There was almost another this afternoon, in the form of a bomb threat while the traitor and company attempted to get me some eats. So I guess its been really interesting so far. I'll let y'all know more tomorrow. I want to put in the Thankyou's first. Steve Goldberg, for the bootlicking and polyglottical information dispensation. More to Steve for hanging on when I was literally climbing the wall. Now, Denise, you shut up. Vince Bradley, for preparing me for the worst, and then not at all. Eric Wulff,. for moral support, freestyle inspiration and head butts. Dan Kramer, my co-conspirator, thanks again for not killing me at least a dozen times, or at least not smacking me in the face when I really deserved it. Lappy, thanks for manning the table all day with no compensation. Thanks to Dave for letting the planet DC stay at his place. Rainbow Imports, Kick in the Grass Footbags, Sipa Sipa, the WFA and Bruce Guettich, Jim Hankins, Garth Smith, Sharon Speck and Kevin Reimer, everyone who showed up, and the Parks Depatment of the City of New York, you made it all possible. Aside from the aforementioned Net catastrophe, we had a smashing success. The weather couldn't have been better. We had an attractive crowd of at least 65 onlookers/spectators, Many folks came in from out of town just to watch. We gave out $255 in Cash prizes, and at least that much in prizes themselves. Saturday we had some lovely freestyle happening in front of the bandshell, right after Eric Wulff delivered a SMASHING DROPLESS performance that turned nearby fields of grain into Shredded wheat for the entire east coast. We'll be getting our fiber regularly for awhile. The final results: Novice Freestyle: 1. Kaiser Ahmad 2. Dave Vermillion 3. Bill Kling 4. Amos Schumacher - props for Amos, he disigned our tshirts and did sidewalk art, too. Intermediate Freestyle: 1. Scott Fitzmorris 2. Jim McCoppin 3. Ian Brill 4. Jonathan Jessen Open Freestyle 1. Eric Wulff 2. Two Heeyooge 3. In my haste to get out of the door, away from 300 emails and thirtyseventeen pounds of paper, tape, paper tape, boxes, t-shirts, et cetera, I neglected a minor detail and some more major thankyou's. We actually distributed almost $700 in cash/prizes. Biggest thanks to Brenda and Joe, Juliet, Scott Durfee, and Rex Stoler for advice, gossip, and packets of information that made cleaning up the numbers so much easier. But no one mentioned anything about a schedule... Thanks again to all the net players who came so far to play in Central, and settling for the North Shores of NJ. I finally thought of a construct that will hold nets up - check it out - we build a couple of heavy two-foot plastic " + " shapes and stick the stanchions in the center. Then we use a short bungee cord strung between the outside arm of the " + " and the top of the stanchion > taa-daa! instant tension!!! Does anyone have the facility to make this? Why couldn't I think of that two days ago? We were looking at sand buckets and cinder blocks and non-competitors hired to hold the lines by hand, when the solution should have been staring me in the face. I only hope you don't get discouraged from coming back next year.
