The footbag gods smiled on us with sunny weather, and exceptionally good energy - The Charge - was provided by all the players who came. New feet from California, Alberta, Illinois, D.C. and Montreal kicked ass and blissed us with their presence for most of the week as well. We missed the usual suspects not being able to make it - but are consoled by the fact that we shall see y'all in a couple of days! The media and spectator turnout was great! As well, we've acquired some loyal non-kicking fans who return to watch this amazing sport every year, and some who came from seeing us at Stanley Park, to watch in awe again at the kicking beach HQ! Our sponsors and supporters were HUGE ! I cannot say enough with thanks for what they did for us this year! Due to their generosity, we had lots of food and drink for the whole tournament, dinner and micro-beer for Saturday night, and stellar prizes for all! At the Sunday grand prize draw, Mike Grueter skipped away with an Alpine car stereo with installation included, provided by Alpine Car Audio Systems and Ralph's Radio. Peter Shunny glided off with his new Snakeboard, and Jody Rusnak was gifted by Bacchus -via Grape Expectations Winemaking- with a Cellar Classic wine kit. We drew prizes throughout both days for competitors, held several special draws for spectators, and dosed notable shredders with some choice freestyle gear. Everyone finished the tournament with at least one prize, and most importantly, with some satisfying kicking experiences. The level of skill was both satisfyingly high and diverse, and having the opportunity to watch so many of the top ranked kickers go at each other was simply Oh-so-cool! Also, in the contingent of organizers, we have many unsung heroes... I now sing the praises of Crass Eddicott in particular Who not only worked hard on this event for almost a year, but who was given crutches at the 11th hour and couldn't play, AND who soldiered on and kept the tourney running smoothly and on time, including chasing folks (youknowwhoyouare) down to play their matches. Thanks to Crass, to all the organizers and to the startling numbers of kickers and volunteers who pitched in to help, our tournament was a huge success and lots of fun! We hope to see all of you here next time (& in two days as well) - Wahoo!!! I'll be going to New York, then Boston, and then I'll work my way down to Florida by car. I'm bringing some samples of our Venezuelan footbag brand, Fushi-bola, and I'd love to receive some feedback about them from you all. If you can email me (or the list) with the times and places your clubs get together, I'd really appreciate it. I don't want to miss this chance to meet the people behind the names immortalized in this year's Worlds results :) Best wishes, Raoul ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com From owner-footbag@eniac.yak.net Fri Aug 22 04:03:33 1997 Received: (from majordom@localhost) (fnord) by eniac.yak.net (8.7.5/8.6.9) id EAA05187 for footbag-outgoing; Fri, 22 Aug 1997 04:03:18 GMT Received: (from bin@localhost) (fnord) by eniac.yak.net (8.7.5/8.6.9) id EAA05183 for footbag@eniac.yak.net; Fri, 22 Aug 1997 04:03:15 GMT Received: from brat@footbag.org () via =-=-=-=-=-= for footbag@majordomo.footbag.org (5179) Received: from Market.NET (Market.NET [140.174.206.2]) (fnord) by eniac.yak.net (8.7.5/8.6.9) with ESMTP id EAA05177 for ; Fri, 22 Aug 1997 04:03:13 GMT Received: from [205.219.91.194] (brat_194.bayarea.net [205.219.91.194]) by Market.NET (8.8.5/8.8.5) with ESMTP id VAA21234 for ; Thu, 21 Aug 1997 21:03:17 -0700 Message-Id: Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Date: Thu, 21 Aug 1997 21:07:47 -0700 To: footbag@footbag.org From: Steve Goldberg Subject: [footbag] 1997 IFAB Meeting Notes Sender: owner-footbag@footbag.org Here are the other main things that came out of this year's IFAB meeting. (Sorry that in the previous message I gave the date wrong -- the meeting was this past Monday, August 18, 1997). ..... General IFAB Decisions ..... 1. IFAB will charge a flat fee of $50 to the Canadian Footbag Alliance for a license to the 1997 IFAB rulebook, to be included in PDF format in a commercial CD-ROM to be published by CFA in the coming months. IFAB will form a licensing/business committee to resolve licensing issues on a case-by-case basis in the future. This nominal fee was agreed upon as a way to protect both the CFA and the IFAB from copyright violations. 2. Bruce Guettich was elected Treasurer of IFAB. 3. Rulebooks will be sold at a wholesale price so that others may resell it. WFA was the only entity selling rulebooks before, and was giving IFAB 100% of the revenue. The CFA would like to begin selling the books, so a subcommittee will determine a viable price for wholesale, so that resellers will be allowed to make a profit on the sale. Bruce Guettich and Brent Welch were chosen as the subcommittee to set the wholesale price, which will be subject to change on a case-by-case basis and to reflect IFAB's production costs, if they change. 4. IFAB will compensate individuals or organizations for their time (not just hard costs) where applicable, including members of the committee who do work that would otherwise be contracted out. Compensation must be approved by the Treasurer, and is only valid for projects that have been agreed upon by the business committee. The rulebook and stats book publication projects are pre-approved, and individuals spending time on layout, editing, and pre-press production of these may bill their time at a reasonable rate. Proposals for new projects that require funding must be submitted to the Treasurer, with approval and oversight of the business committee (to be created). 5. A new Worlds Oversight Committee was created to oversee the World Championships as it moves from place to place. This committee will: (A) Decide where the event will take place from year to year, accepting and reviewing applications from candidate hosts. (B) Determine the criteria for selecting a host for the event, and create a list of requirements for candidates wishing to submit applications so they might determine their eligibility. (C) Standardize how Worlds is run, including: * basic event formats and rules * computation formula for the "overall" ranking system * directors' responsibilities and requirements (D) Develop and maintain a set of support tools to be used from year to year, location to location, including: * registration and results software (database/spreadsheet) * freestyle judging software * pool sheets, judging cards, etc., in digital & paper form * to-do lists * etc. (E) Bring "international" sponsors to the event, such as Hacky Sack and other large sponsors. The relationships with those sponsors will be owned by the IFAB Worlds Committee, so that they are consistent over time. Once a site is chosen for Worlds and approved by the committee, the "international" sponsors are ideally to be included in the package. Steve Goldberg is the chairman of the new Worlds Oversight Committee, and the other members of the committee are: Bruce Guettich, Brent Welch, John Stalberger, and Chard Cook. 7. Recruiting and Representation: it was generally agreed that more representation is needed on the Board from other regions (especially Quebec). 8. Tricia George was given a vote of confidence (unanimously) to remain on the Board, despite her absense at the past two meetings. (She had commitments both years that made it impossible for her to attend.) 9. The following chair and committee changes were made this year: (A) Derrick Fogle & Brent Welch have stepped down as Co-Chairs (B) Steve Goldberg & Scott Milne were elected as Co-Chairs of IFAB (C) Jeff Johnson has resigned from the IFAB. (D) Steve Smith was elected as Chair of the Golf Committee; he will remain as Chair of Consecutives Committee. That is all. If you have questions, contact the IFAB member nearest you. The official roster will not be updated online for several weeks, but you can find last year's roster at http://ifab.footbag.org/roster.html Steve From owner-footbag@eniac.yak.net Fri Aug 22 13:24:54 1997 Received: (from majordom@localhost) (fnord) by eniac.yak.net (8.7.5/8.6.9) id NAA07076 for footbag-outgoing; Fri, 22 Aug 1997 13:23:35 GMT Received: (from bin@localhost) (fnord) by eniac.yak.net (8.7.5/8.6.9) id NAA07072 for footbag@eniac.yak.net; Fri, 22 Aug 1997 13:23:32 GMT Received: from dfogle@mlerf.org () via =-=-=-=-=-= for footbag@majordomo.footbag.org (7069) Received: from Market.NET (Market.NET [140.174.206.2]) (fnord) by eniac.yak.net (8.7.5/8.6.9) with ESMTP id NAA07067 for ; Fri, 22 Aug 1997 13:23:32 GMT Received: from trib1.trib.net ([12.10.112.1]) by Market.NET (8.8.5/8.8.5) with SMTP id GAA24473 for ; Fri, 22 Aug 1997 06:23:42 -0700 Received: from www.mlerf.org (www.mlerf.org [12.10.114.3]) by trib1.trib.net (NTMail 3.02.13) with ESMTP id ba051013 for ; Fri, 22 Aug 1997 08:32:12 -0500 Subject: Re: [footbag] 1997 IFAB Meeting Notes Message-Id: <000000277042955101138@mlerf.org> From: dfogle@mlerf.org (Derrick Fogle, MLERF) Date: Fri, 22 Aug 1997 08:25:38 -0500 Organization: MLERF X-Mailer: CommuniGate 2.9.5 Reply-To: dfogle@mlerf.org (Derrick Fogle, MLERF) To: footbag@footbag.org MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit Sender: owner-footbag@footbag.org On Thu, Aug 21, 1997, 11:07:47 PM US CST Steve Goldberg wrote: > (D) Steve Smith was elected as Chair of the Golf Committee; > he will remain as Chair of Consecutives Committee. Does anyone have >suggestions which are a little less curt? Bring copies of videos and lend them to the kickers you think show the most promise. Teach everyone the "Magic Hop (tm)". That's the little hop we all do during a stall -- start with toe delays and teach the magic hop and the rhythm that goes with it -- set, plant, hop, catch, set, plant, hop, catch. Everyone will get into it. The magic hop is the key to freestyle. (The term Magic Hop (tm) is trademarked, 1992-1997, Steve Goldberg Enterprises, Inc.) :-) At some point, go up to each player individually -- after you've kicked with them for a while, pull them aside, and say, "You know, I didn't want to say this in front of everyone else, but I really think you have what it takes. You've got a really nice style -- I can see it already. How long have you been playing? I think you're ready for the 'next level'." Bring good music and a box (CD and tape) and make sure you have power (either AC or fresh batteries). The music alone can be a draw. Make sure everyone knows they can bring their own music and you are not a music nazi. Give everyone a target for next time. I.e., if you taught the Magic Hop (tm) to a few people who didn't know it before, tell them next time you want to see at least 5 left-to-right toe delays using the Magic Hop (tm). Make sure everyone remembers that you're kicking at the SAME TIME and in the SAME PLACE every week, and make a RAIN LOCATION. Make sure as each person leaves that they remember when and where to meet next. Get everyone's phone number and call them the day before each subsequent meeting until you've instilled the pattern in them. Then, once they're hooked, cook them all dinner some time. My exception to this rule occurs when I believe myself unable to otherwise contact a footbag flying over my head; a switch in my brain tells me it's too late to back up quickly enough, and my hop is a last ditch attempt to reach the bag for a bang-back. It fails just as often as succeeds, but I can get a very effective speedy return in this manner - and even if it turns into a lob, my opponent is usually frozen at the spectacle at my weird-looking jump, or rolling on the ground in laughter. >>Slight correction required here: Regardless of who owns the trademark to >>this move - the magic hop is the key to *net* service return. >>...... > >As loathe as I am to disagree with my esteemed colleague from Vancouver, I >feel compelled to remark that she is out of her tree. I was just thinking about the useful tiny little hop I was taught to use when facing a topspinning bag served at me, esp. if fairly close at my body. This tiny miniscule infinitesimal little hop gives one that extra "stop" on the bag, while keeping your contact low, negating the spin that ruins your set. Am not talking about banging or spiking. The e-mail lists I administer are for FOOTBAG-related discussion ONLY. Any abuse of this list for any reason, well-intended or not, will result in permanent removal of the offending party. Please don't make this list any more difficult to manage than it already is. Thanks. I hope you all enjoy the relatively spam-free lists we have. I am sorry that this one slipped through the filter. For those of you who have no idea what I'm talking about, you are one of the lucky ones who I was able to spare from having to see the most recent in a rash of e-mail viruses that are disguised as warning messages about an evil, fatal, e-mail message that will erase the contents of your hard disk. For the fiftieth time, an e-mail message cannot erase your hard disk. (And please, those of you who want to nit-pick semantics with me and argue that you can, please keep your opinions to yourselves. Thanks.) But either way, even if there *were* an evil e-mail virus that deleted mail, you have NO PLACE sending it to the footbag list. Send it to your other friends, but if it's not about footbag, leave the rest of us alone in our ignorance. Thanks for listening.
