I just got a call from some guy who wanted me to put on a footbag demonstration at the end of January.... now this doesn't suprise me, but what does is the circumstance; the occasion is a Bar Mitzvah. This struck me as a little on the weird side -- should I advertise myself as a " 'party footbag clown' - available for parties and weddings"? Would I somehow be compromising my integrity? Don't disown me, but... makin' footbags is as fun as kickin' em!!! Wanna be part of an online talk group on "footbag design and sewing"? The footbag.org discussions are cool -- but this will be a (mail list and/or an occasional realtime) chat for sack sewers (aspiring or accomplished) solamente -- folks who wish to talk non-technically about and freely share patterns, resources, questions, stitching techniques and perhaps, build a "product gallery". There must be scores (hundreds?) of us leather-heads out there, blithely sewing "futbolitos", one by one... Anybody else wired who shares this philosophy? Waddya think? Wouldn't it be sweet to link up intelligent communication among the underground of bag makers? Email me. Also, a reminder to visit the new "Footbag Peace Initiative" website, dedicated to exploiting a (you know which) popular, sub-cultural sport to promote personal health, cooperation and non-violence among at-risk teens and adults around the world. This site will have interest to kickers as well as those who teach, counsel, coach or do social work... also to peaceniks, leather crafters, language teachers or experiential educators. Come visit... even if you don't care about saving the planet. You could peek at fat "Bag-osaurus"! Andy Linder (O ledgend that he is) used to use Nike Bruin's for freestyle. He saw the need to flatten the inside and here is what he did... He sanded down the area that was to have the "instep augmentation procedure" and layed down a relatively thin layer of shoe-goo (availble at WFA). Then another, then another. Until the desired thickness was achieved. This worked well for freestyle, but I am not sure how well it will work with net, given the additional wear and tear, and scraping, and grass and wetness. Many variables to worry about in Net that are not there in freestyle. Give it a shot, it can't hurt. Also, I have heard that people have had Knobby BMX bike tires essentially glued to the bottoms of their net shoes for grass/slick conditions traction. Steve Smith has it done at a local shoesmith (or whatever you call that industry), and Kenny Shults did one pair a long time ago, and the bottom never came off... he hand sewed the tire to his shoe. Much more permanent than glue, but he once said to me that "You couldn't pay me enough to do *that* again" (or something like that). Basically meaning that it was quite a bit of work to sew it. Anyway... See ya! They have reasonably flat surfaces with just an ever-so-slight cut-away at the base of the inside and outside surfaces of the shoe. The tread is awsome for outdoor play, with a look and grip reminiscent of mountain bike tires. That's the good news. The bad news is in this day and age of the ever changing shoe market, few lines have the staying power of the Rod Lavers. Adidas currently does not have any Terrain Lites in stock and is unsure whether they will be carrying them in 1998. If some become available we would be happy to special order them for players. Yup - the Saucony's have been great: perrrrfectly flat insides and outsides, wicked tread for slick grass, holding up to a lot of punishment & the tread up the toe stays glued. So far as I know, they aren't in anyone's bad books particularly. Doesn't work too well if you have narrow feet though - that whole brand is definitely geared to wider feet. (Note: Fox Sports America is a spanish sport channel that shows soccer constantly. Footvolley is a Brazilian foot-volleyball game played on a sand volley ball court using a soccer ball. Contact rule is like soccer.) I saw only half of the commercial, so I am not exactly sure what I saw was "footvolley". If anyone else have seen it, let me know. If this commercial really did feature "footvolley", this must be a big step for their sport. Sorry we didn't cover the women kickers, because we know you all deserve it! The fact of the matter is, we just didn't have the finances to get to a bunch of tournaments, and we wanted to get it out quick. Unfortunately, we didn't get any good pictures of women competitors doing anything before publication. We do have some good pictures now, including some of you breaking records, Ida. Now, we are spending all of our efforts trying to focus on the direction we want to take in our endeavour, and as soon as we get get the funding we're currently soliciting, we'll have a phat magazine full of the best guys and gals of the game. The marketing people here at USAFL are busting their heads, trying to come up with a plan which will finally do it for the sport, players and all the rest of the folks wrapped up in the footbag community. USAFL knows that the only way to make the sport big is by having a positive attitudeÖsimply knowing and truthfully believing that we can manifest or make happen that which we plan, will make the difference. This Sunday (the 28th), my friend Sloan is having a party and bbq at Tilden Park in Berkeley. He told me to invite the footbag net-heads to come by.You freestyle types are of course also welcome, but there is no flat pavement around to jam on. The event starts at 1pm, and the site is the LAUREL picnic area, which is located on South Park Dr in Tilden. There will be bbqs set up, and a couple of kegs- so bring something to que, and perhaps we will work on our drunken-style net. To get to Tilden, take 580 to 24, exit at Claremont, turn left and follow it all the way to the top (past the Claremont resort) and turn left onto Grizzly Peak (it might be Skyline, but it will be obvious) Continue around a few corners and take the 2nd right, which is South Park Dr. Go down the hill and you will find the Laurel picnic area on your left. Park and follow the path across the creek and to the right to the field/picnic area. This will be a cool party with cool people, and will be even better with a few nets set up. Please tell those without e-mail the info. He chose it, and they let him, and now it is over. This looks like it will be a never ending thread, and there is not a whole lot to talk about on this subject, and I am getting tired of hearing about it, by the way, good job Peter, I like the choice in music (I play the dijeridoo too). Everyone PLEASE ignore this message. Obviously Josh posted to the wrong list. This thread will *not* continue on the footbag list, so do not reply to this message. If Josh reposts on the freestyle list, that's his prerogative; but PLEASE do not reply to this message on the "footbag" list. There are TWO lists: "footbag" and "freestyle". Some people seem to get confused about this. You cannot have or pick up a conversation from one list on the other. The memberships on the two lists are very different. And those of you on footbag who are not on freestyle, do not take Josh's comments out of context. Just if you can, act as if you never saw it. Thank you so much! :-) Steve
