He has instruted me (with wisdom) that I should, in preparation for the upcoming (but-not-listed-yet) second New York Footbag Explosion, make some serious pre-tourney and day-of-event checklists, as opposed to last year's "just trying to remember it all and faking the rest" policy. So I was seriously thinking about it (sitting around and twiddling my thumbs) when I remembered about that HUGE file of info that everyone was so great in sending me last year. I think I must have left it in my other apartment. Not all the stuff, just the checklists. Would it be possible to get some input on things to remember to do? I remember some of whom it was that sent me stuff, too: Mike Stoler, Virginians, Marylandians and Albanians (oh, my!), sneaky JP; also Steve and Kendall and Becca and Bruce and hmmm... I seem to have fallen off there. Big or small things are good and definitely appreciated. Big Fat & Forgetful JP What's that you say, boy Hacker? Someone stole your datum? TO THE INTERNET!!!! So look up 'Creative Athletics' on the internet. I think they even have a link thru Footbag Worldwide. With a little patience and a lot of reading there's more info at http://www.footbag.org/ about the sport of footbag than there is at any library or store (except for the guy who printed 50,000 'Footbucks' with the wrong address) and I'd bet all the money in my pocket - 42 cents, that is, that you and your school will find everything your little heart desires. Since 1983, the World Footbag Association has expanded footbag's growth and popularity through workshops and presentations at hundreds of schools each year. Our instructional sessions emphasize non-contact, non-competitive lifetime activities, and feature dynamic feats of athleticism combined with special educational and inspirational messages on teamwork, communication, sportsmanship, discipline, and drugs and alcohol. It is one of the most fun things there is to do with a footbag (aside from blurry ducking blistering whirl, of course). I love Footbag Net and I wish I had more opportunities to play. Unfortunately bedrock and concrete don't hold those metal spikey things very well, so it's only when I get out to play with my Jersey Buddies three or four times a year (gonna change that) but when I do it is THE BEST TIME. As to footbags specifically, I only know one kind, so if it ain't a juice you might as well be kickin' a rock. No offense to other net bag makers out there bu I just never played 'em. I enjoy playing net so much that I can't really help getting out there and beating myself up two or three times a week. It keeps you in shape, it is frustrating enough to play that you are constantly striving to better your game, it comes with a built-in community (if you're lucky enough to be in a net and freestyle-friendly area), and it's just fun. Yah - as Greg said, its hard to be objective about net now. The game draws me to commute across town at least four times a week, it makes me reschedule the rest of my life and work around kicking times and sunny days. When I'm dead tired and the phone rings, and someone's on the line saying "Hey its not raining - what about some net..." the energy comes back out of nowhere and I'm up hunting for my shoes. Hmmm ..."more fun than a barrel of monkeys!" ... no that's too lame an expression (or too peculiar...hm). Mainly it's what I want to be doing most of the time, what comes up in my dreams, what i plan to be playing until i am waaaaaay old and maybe still even then! On net bags: I've played with lots of different kinds, rarely have any matched the Flying Clipper 32 and 42 panels for roundness and "stickiness" and just generally kicking well. Recently we've been kicking net with 20 panel Moby Kick's which have been really good on all those counts. Which did surprise me in a bag with fewer panels. So am totally impressed and recommending this new bag, also because it costs much less than bags with more panels. Canadian Footbag Alliance makes them & they have a website: http://www.footbagcanada.com But also I am not criticizing all the other net bags - have kicked with lots of groovy ones, but have found that most are rather hard to acquire, esp. when only very few are made. scrappy j.p. I have been an avid footbag player for about 15 years but haven't actively played in the last 2-3 years due to a severe mt. biking injury/accident. I was hoping to get "reconnnected" to local events and players in my area (S.E. Massachusetts) as I currently only have one person that I can play with regularly (at least once/week). My brother and best friend from grade school also play but their schedules are tight and require a lot of travel so our "circle" has basically boiled down to just the two of us (which works pretty well for net play, but I'd like to add more people to our freestyle group). If there's anyone in the SE Mass area who knows of regular get togethers, clubs, etc. I would be interested in hearing more... Thanks, in advance, and keep on kickin'... Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Sender: owner-footbag@footbag.org Heya all! Nohejbal is the Czecheslovakian version of footbag net. Translates roughly as "leg-ball." It has been played since at least the beginning of the century in Czecheslovakia, and by Czechs whereever they live. It is usually played on a court similar in size to our footbag net court, with a higher net. The ball may be "wallyball" sized, bouncy, and you may kick a ball that has been "set" off the ground. (tho' I am not sure whether I understood that last piece of info correctly) The game is apparently associated with community gatherings involving singing and games and general camaraderie. My sources for this information had trouble explaining anything more about the game, since they had never tried to translate the terms into english before. So now I am really curious - if anyone out there knows anything about Nohejbal, please write to me. With one month before the big tournament, I thought I would let everyone know where things stand. The 1998 Southern Regional Footbag Championships will be held on April 25-26 in conjunction with the Wildflower Festival near Dallas, TX. This annual festival brings over 40,000 people to see live bands, inline skating, BMX stuff, and, this year, footbag! They have a page at http://www.cor.net/wildflower/homepage.html So far, we have several big names coming in... RIPPIN RICK REESE (1996 World freestyle champion) and DARYL GENZ from Colorado, TINA LEWIS (2nd place 1997 Worlds Women's singles net) from Austin, STEVE GOLDBERG (you konw and love him from footbag.org and this list) from California, Jeremy Keller (recently turned pro and crazy pixie set guy) from Alabama, and many more. Why are these people coming from so far? Maybe they have heard about our *GUARANTEED $1500 PRIZE MONEY* (probably closer to $2000). Or maybe they have heard about the live TV coverage on Friday the 24th from Fox Sports. Then again, it could be the Texas sized player's packs that are (or soon will be) world famous. The fact that this IS a WFA sanctioned event should be noted. Are you a net player? Maybe the PROFESSIONALLY MANICURED LAWNS will be an incentive. Golf? Hey... we do have a killer course set up. Freestyle? Rippin and Daryl... need I say more? Yes, this is the Southern Regionals. Yes, you can come even if you don't live in the south. In fact, word has it that one of the top Canadian net players just might be coming down. Wonderful sponsors are helping us out here. We have Whole Foods giving fruit for breakfast, Hackey Sack giving some $$$, and Redman - all that is footbag - giving both money and help with those previously mentioned player's packs. Footbag's future is in the south. Don't miss out. First just to get a = date was kind of a feat. Then on saturday morning we learned that our gym was reserved for a = volleyball tournament. There was a misunderstanding between the = college and the city of Montreal. Anyway it's a long story but we = manage to get a smaller gym which was OK for the number of = participants. There was only 15 competitors this year which might be partly due to = the delays for a date, but the level of play pretty good. The open singles final finished on a sad note. Yves Archambault while = playing me, injured himself very badly. He made a wrong move while = digging and rip up his knee. He quit the singles final but felted he = could play for the doubles final. In fact he did win it, but after an = hour his leg was sweling real bad and he couldn't walk anymore. The = doctor said he would have to get an operation to reconstruct his knee = (if he want to do a competitive sport). So we won't see Yves on a = court for a while. I wish him to come back soon. The freestyle event was cancelled due to a lack freestyler.
