Even multi-talented Josh Casey showed from B-town to enhance game and interview. (He is here for the semester doing school shows for Creative Athletics.) Thanks also to to Shawn and Andrew of Wendell, who came with Matt from Leverett. Thanks also to Nicole of Greenfield who spoke eloquently on camera and demonstrated speedy sewing technique! Momma Jannie emphasized the importance of sports and footbag to women and girls. Thanks Tim Demurs, the gentle, flying man from Amherst (who's yet to show his talented self at a tournament) and to loyal Shana from New Hampshire. Even our extremely excellent friends, local bluegrass recording stars, "Salamander Crossing" got involved when NESN news team Steve and Mike fell in love with Salamandr's new CD - which we just happened to be playing ;-) and whisked off for sound track on their piece! (BTW... unsolicited, review: if you enjoy kicking to virtuouso, contemporary bluegrass with excellent material, bluesy mood, lilting harmonies and breakout fiddle, banjo and guitar riffs... you'll love "Bottleneck Dreams". Call: 1-800-694-5354 or visit the Signature Sounds link from my site (http://www.valinet.com/~dbotkin) to sample the tunes.) The guy is on holiday from the States, and got in touch with Lynton Stephens who in turn tried to get as many people to kick with Sunil as possible. Top stuff Lynton. Thanks!! I hope you enjoyed your day at the footy Sunil! By the way, he had a footbag that was made by Carol Wedemeir (I hope I spelt that right). It was so incredibly light and supple....looked good too; all red and burnt orange. She makes 'em good. I hope you enjoyed your day at the footy Sunil! By the way, he had a footbag that was made by Carol Wedemeir (I hope I spelt that right). Tried to shred in the 105 degree heat in Delhi and got floored, my body just held up a big, "I don't think so!" banner after a few exhausting juggles. But... then I headed up into the Himalayas and was blessed with the stellar-est of footbag circumstances - 70 degree weather, blue skies, mountain vistas AND... locals that shred!?!?!!!!! Yes! You heard me correctly, DEEP within the Indian Himalayas the kids are kicking around a sack made of many strung together rubber bands. Consecutive clipper kicks was the basic object of the game they played (not flying clippers, but clipper kicks.) I played with one smooth 12 year old that hit 25 consecutive clipper kicks. Yikes! Try that sometime! I couldn't even perform 3 consecutive clipper kicks, and they laughed at my feeble attempt. They didn't laugh, however, when I started to do a little guiltless shredding with their little rubber- band bag. We played with my Carol, and they liked it, but they definitely preferred their own bouncy projectile. I also tried to convert them to the enlightened universe of the DELAY... But they proved relatively unreceptive and either ignored, or just didn't understand my attempts at instruction. Also, all you net-heads, the locals were also playing a little footbag net! They played with no net, however, and relied on etiquette that players would not nail it strait down. They had also never seen anyone try to contact the sac with the bottom of their foot, and were flabbergasted when I returned to sender in that fashion. Anyway - I just wanted to inform that footbag is going down in South Central Asia - much to my pleasant surprise. Note - All footbag playing by local Indians was done in flip-flops. Anyway - Peace out, Bum Shiva, and I'll hopefully see you all for the weekend of worlds. -Ethan ps - after many four add mcneuvers including blur, blender, torque and paradox whirl, the pendulum was, of course, the move of choice and requested time and time again by the Kullu Valley youngsters. It is definately footbag net, but the guys in it are wearing those shorts that are really baggy and rub the hair off of your lower leg. Looks like a novice doubles match to me. Certainly no spikes, but a couple of inside kicks and a pass. It is at the very end of the commercial and accounts for about 4 seconds of a 30 second spot. See ya! It's ironic, actually. I probably spent most of the interview with the reporter who covered our tournament this weekend articulating the problems our sport has had to overcome in getting positive press in the U.S. that focusses on the athleticism of the sport and not on the dead-head countercultural roots from which it stems. This reporter seemed to have understood that, and she asked me some wonderful questions that implied that she really "got it". But then she went and wrote this article: http://www.mercurycenter.com:80/premium/local/docs/hackysack24.htm What you can't see on the web page above is the photograph on the front of the Living section that accompanied the article (in the San Jose Mercury News -- Silicon Valley's premier newspaper): Ryan Sanders, shirtless, tattoo-ridden, nipple-rings and all. The bag was barely visible. The only shot of net (which was the sport I played up more, in an attempt to keep the media focussed) was blurry (intentionally) and out of context (tight shot of a leg), and on the second page of the story. So much for highlighting the athleticism of the sport and helping us shed our image as a bunch of stoners. The only hint of respectability she gave us was the quote she attributed to me, which didn't make the Internet version because it accompanied the photo. I don't have it handy, but it basically said (next to the photo of Ryan Sanders) that we are serious athletes. Somehow the way they juxtaposed my quote with that photo was more than disingenuous. And of course, the quote they attributed to Jody (I was there for that part of the interview) was essentially every other sentence, with the relevant information extracted, and the meaning lost, placed out of context with an unrelated subject, leaving the reader to think she's a dimwit and we're all a bunch of stoner slackers who don't have anything better to do than jump up and down with a little bean bag. So folks, I've decided (after 10 of these articles over the years) it really doesn't matter what you tell the media, how you slant the interview, what you show them, or how hard you work to improve the image of this sport. The U.S. media are and always will be slanted against us. I guess we just have to come to terms with that, and continue to promote this sport overseas and in Canada where at least the media will give us a fighting chance to show what we've got. Go get 'em, Finland, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Germany, France, and other countries... show us how the sport can be perceived without the buit-in biases of American journalists. Someday maybe the U.S. media will have to face reality and accept us. But for now, it's up to you. Expanding on this 'people being nice' bit are tha facts: People are manipulative People are twofaced People are liars It's easy enough to forget this when speaking about individuals because there are so many exceptions, but one thing to keep in mind is tha media (which sucks worse than banks) - the media isn't interested in truth, even though it makes a good slogan. The media [from Walter Kronkite to Jerry Springer] are interested in one thing and that's your attention. They don't care if they have to paraphrase, misquote or use pictures of Dancin' Matt Churney. Sensationalism makes the money, the money puts tha food on tha table. Also, you didn't get interviewed by 60 minutes (they'd misrepresent you too) but by some woman named Enge no one ever heard of. She's no Maury Povich or even a Craig Killborn, she's just some nobody. She's got it stuck in her mirror with her name under it thinking, "boy, I really stuck it to them" but how many people will read that? How many of them believe everything they read? Most of tha subconscious decision-making that we do has nothing to do with tha articles, it has to do with tha pictures of tha pretty girls showing a little leg. So fear not where tha media tread my friend Steve, more 12-14 year-olds will be influenced by that tripe, thinking, "wow, I wanna be cool and smoke pot and fall in love and call myself an athlete while I'm at it. And since I'm not rich enough to snowboard, I guess it's time to buy a pair of lavers." Or maybe they won't, and life as we know it will crash and burn. Just maybe we'll all die of some plague and never know tha light of day. Just maybe... I think I forgot where I was going with this. Ah, well. The people have changed probably more than the image, but I still think footbag is something that draws and welcomes the non-conformists. Steve is very, very involved with sponsorship. Steve courts the big sponsors that are rather judgmental and have very tightly puckered sphincters. The 'bad' articles hurt his chances at being taken seriously - and funded - by those sponsors. If you'd solicited a mile in his shoes, that article would give you high blood pressure, too. It is not an entirely either/or proposition, so the following is an over-simplification of the matter. But, anyway: To gain funding, footbag has to lose its counterculture flavor. To keep its unique counterculture flavor, footbag has to forgo funding. >At Worlds, home piercing kits and temporary tattoos in the players' >packs! I, personally, would rather see footbag keep more of its unique 'flavor' - after all I was a pothead when I got into it - and be less robustly funded activity. I'm not good enough to 'be in it for the money' so if I'm gonna be in it I want to be there because of the wonderful, unique people that are drawn to the sport! My life experiences have driven home the realization that money is nice, but it is not as important as experience. I ask myself this because seeing old pictures of bags from the beginning, they were made of leather or suede. So if you know the answer please drop me a line telling me. No such thing as negative press. Taking responsibility for shaping the public's view of footbag is a lofty goal, been there, too much work. I figure if I can keep my own yard clean, I'm doin' ok. The press will eat you if you give them a knife and fork. I have scars to prove it. Lead them without divulging your agenda, they will draw their own conclusions. Having a Press Release can help, but ultimately they will print what they saw, heard and experienced. Maybe we need another categorie, like Open tattooless w/out body piercings intermediate doubles distance footbag golf. Bring the reporter to that event for some tasty coverage. Footbag is not unlike other sports with respect to drug use. Does Jennifer Cappriatti ring a bell? The Babe was known to have sucked down a few frosties. Are tennis or baseball lesser for it? How many times have you heard "he was pulled over for speeding and a small amount of marijuna was discovered..." and they were talking about some athlete. Hoops comes to mind. Remember the Snowborder in the olympics expelled for having trace amounts of THC show up in blood tests? >What's wrong with a few tattoos and a couple of nipple rings? Maybe we >should ditch this white bread image. Yea, what's that guy's name with the funny hair on the Chicago Bulls? Dennis Rodley or something. >To gain funding, footbag has to lose its counterculture flavor. >To keep its unique counterculture flavor, footbag has to forgo funding. Those people, the counterculture, spend $. Have you seen the MGD ads lately? How 'bout Carl's Jr? We're not talking about the Disney look here. Skateboard has prospered by promoting that bad boy image. Last time I checked Snowboarding wasn't losing the popularity contest. > and be less robustly funded activity. I'm not good enough to 'be in it for the money' Not much room to be less funded. Is anyone really paying the rent from "playing" footbag? Tournament prize money I mean, yea, like the circuit, you know, the tour, dude. "The better the bud, the bigger the adventure!" Don't worry.... 'bout a thing Cause every little thing gonna be alright Sing it now....
