Sender: owner-footbag@footbag.org I told you so. :-( Despite one of the most professional and best World Championships ever witnessed (and some day these guys'll eat their words), the Montreal Gazette publishes this utter garbage: http://www.montrealgazette.com:80/PAGES/980716/1859885.html The author, Bill Brownstein, may be summarily flamed at bbrownst@thegazette.southam.ca Here's the column, reprinted without permission: --- Column - Bill Brownstein - The Montreal Gazette, Thursday 16 July 1998 Footbags flying in the wind ...Silly season is upon us... At first glance, it looks like a convention of cow-pie kickers has descended upon the fields of Ile Ste. Helene. Makes sense. This is, after all, Montreal, and the silly season is upon us. Close. Scores of mellow, muscular young men and women are hoofin' Hacky Sacks for no apparent reason. Others are engaged in a form of volleyball in which participants can only use their feet to spike the sack over the net. Hello. It's hot. It's humid. Please tell me I'm not hallucinating again. Not exactly, says "Toxic" Tom Bergamasco, a kindly sacker from Basking Ridge, N.J. He informs me that I've just happened upon the 19th World Footbag Championships, which wrap up Sunday at La Ronde. Hacking Their Sacks OK, Montreal won't be staging the World Cup any time soon, but, damn, if the city isn't the surrealist sports capital of the universe. Last weekend, the streets of Old Montreal were turned over to the daredevils pedaling it out in the North American Bicycle Courier Championships. The week before, 30 teams of Frisbee flingers from across the continent competed in the Montreal Ultimate Jazz Tournament on the grounds of the Douglas Hospital. So why should anyone be surprised that 200 entrants from Canada, the U.S., Denmark, Finland and Australia have come here to hack their sacks and compete for valuable cash prizes in footbag freestyle and net events? Tournament director Yves Archambault won't be kicking anything this week, except his crutches. Ripped knee ligaments have removed him from competition, but have hardly put a dent in his enthusiasm. Footbag is his life. When not competing, he sells footbags and conducts workshops across the country. "We're finally making footbag groove," he says. "And I've got a lot of kick left in me, too." Not that there was any doubt. Archambault has seen the future of sport and believes it's footbag. And why not? You can do it solo or in a group, indoors or out. All a participant needs is a pair of running shoes, a footbag that can be bought for a buck (or $100), and the coordination of soccer star Ronaldo. Evidently, Montreal, San Francisco and Portland, Ore. are the footbag hotspots of this planet. Even better news for hero-starved Montrealers, local foot-spikers Sebastien Verdy and Emmanuel Bouchard just may be the best footbag nets players in the world. So says Kickers Quarterly Footbagazine - the footbag bible. And so says Bruce Guettich, president of the World Footbag Association, based in laid-back Steamboat Springs, Colo. Guettich, a former professional skier, claims his association has 44,000 members in 39 countries. Among this group are a blissed-out mix of doctors, lawyers, computer geeks and beach bums. "Because it's a non-traditional sport that requires a lot of mind control as well as dexterity, it attracts people not normally attracted to team sports." Guettich does admit, however, that footbaggers don't always get respect. "Well, my father is a doctor. I don't think he really understands what I do." Juggling With the Feet But Carol Wedemeyer does. A flight attendant and artist from San Francisco, Wedemeyer is a former world freestyle sack champ. She equates footbag to juggling with her feet. It actually looks more like synchronized swimming without the noseplugs, or the pool. But her greatest feat is doing dizzying foot stunts with a sack all the while carrying on a conversation. "I could probably keep the footbag going all day without dropping it, but I do have a life," Wedemeyer explains. We're not so sure about Guettich. He's really committed to footbag. His dream is that footbag become an Olympic event in his lifetime. But he isn't optimistic. "At this point," he sighs, "footbag is only slightly more popular than street luge." Street luge! No offence, footbaggers, but is there a sport more tailor made to Montreal and its bike couriers? Ah, barreling down Mountain St. on a toboggan with wheels, smashing people and vehicles at will. Take us to your leaders, lugers - do we have a championship venue for you. ---- End of trash. Steve P.S. We have and will continue to get more great media out of this event. But I want to make sure you all know what an uphill battle we're fighting. Even at our best we can be portrayed as just wasting our times. But of course, we know better. Again, they'll eat their words. :-) Great job so far, everyone at the Worlds, it's been a fun week. I wouldn't trade it for "barreling down Mountain St. on a toboggan with wheels" if my life depended on it. Sender: owner-footbag@footbag.org Just for the record, we've also had lots of great press around the world footbag championships. One example is the nice "What's Going On" feature that's provided by my employer (Excite) although the connection is purely coincidental, called "The Coolest Place on Earth Today". It will probably only be there this week (the week of Worlds), but if you get this in the next couple of days, try going to: http://city.net/features/whatsgoingon It's pretty nice, and points people to the website. Great, useful, positive press. And I quote, again w/o permission: --- begin quote: Don't just sit there, there's lots of agile footbagging happening in Montreal today. That's right, the 19th Annual World Footbag Championships have been going on there since July 15th. There's still time, though, since the Championships go until July 19th, when you'll catch the best of the footbag action. Still, you may not be ready to throw some clean undies into an overnight bag and hop on the next plane to Canada. In fact, you might be wondering, what in the world is a footbag? Certainly, this kickin' 26 year-old sport has never graced the cover of Sports Illustrated. And you are undoubtedly more acquainted with its recreational identifier: hacky sack. In 1972, footbag legend John Stalberger met Mike Marshall. Marshall was engaged in a Native American game whose object was to kick a small, soft object. They called the no-hands activity "hacking the sack." The two went on to design and market the "Hacky Sack." Eventually, the little bags became popular. It developed into a sport in which players volley the mushy pouch over a 5-foot-high net (initially for Badminton) that became the net for "Footbag Net." "Freestyle Footbag" became prevalent around college campuses. As the sport you could put in your pocket, it was a favorite among young nonconformists. They could form Hacky Sack circles anywhere, to pass the bag and do tricks. The Association Quebecoise de Aqi-Footbag (AQAF) hosts this year's Footbag Championships, with $10,000 American at stake. Last year's director, Kendall KIC, insisted that "this is not a hackey-slacker Grateful Dead-type bunch of long-hairs trying to kick it as high as they can." She admitted that some of the footbaggers do have long hair, and was quick to emphasize the positive vibe prevalent in the game. "Netiquette" dictates that before, during and after each match, competitors give each other a hand-shake or a high-five. Footbag Net is played much like volleyball, but with the feet. New-aged named KIC called it "an aerial shin-clashing dogfight above the net." Players serve, set, spike, and dig the footbag just as in volleyball. It is the only sport in the world strictly played with the feet. The Badminton-size court (44'x20') with the standard 5-foot high net is where the action goes down in men's and women's singles, doubles, and mixed doubles. Qualifiers are all week, and championships are Sunday. Freestyle Footbag is more of an artistic expression. Routines are choreographed to music, and judged in the same way as figure skating and gymnastics. Players perform moves such as jumps, the butterfly stall, the whirl, the swirl, and the big apple sauce. In stalls, the Footbag is held shortly by a part of the body. Corresponding points are awarded to each correctly executed move, based on its difficulty. Championships for Freestyle are Saturday at 7:30. As in any sport, Footbag has its heroes. In 1997, "The Foot Doctor," a.k.a. Dr. Gary Lautt, held the record for consecutive kicks, maintaining an average of over 106 contacts per minute! The Doctor once eked out 52,355 continuous kicks over the course of 8 hours, 11 minutes and 29 seconds. This 47 year-old father of two competes in Birkenstocks and white tube socks. Freestyle legend Kenny "The Enforcer" Shults was the first to integrate a jump rope into a routine. World Footbag Association touring teams have kicked during NBA halftime shows, world's fairs, sports and fitness events, and shopping mall and recreational center exhibitions. I haven't seen it myself yet...but it did affect kicking this weekend in Vancouver in a very cool way: We had serious crowds watching us playing net today, game after game, asking lots of questions and generally being very enthusiastic spectators. Some excitedly told us that they'd just seen "us" on T.V. last night. I hear that some of the footage was of Jake Leong and Andy Ronald, and some of Women's doubles freestyle. Has anyone seen this? (Has anyone taped this?) Any other media sightings? scrappy From owner-footbag@eniac.yak.net Tue Jul 21 20:54:45 1998 Received: (from majordom@localhost) by eniac.yak.net (8.9.0.Beta5/8.9.0.Beta5) id UAA25289 for footbag-outgoing; Tue, 21 Jul 1998 20:54:45 GMT X-Authentication-Warning: eniac.yak.net: majordom set sender to owner-footbag using -f Received: from dbotkin.hampshire.edu (ppp13.valinet.com [206.98.218.42]) by mbs.valinet.com (8.8.8/8.7.1) with ESMTP id PAA12915 for ; Tue, 21 Jul 1998 15:41:51 -0400 (EDT) Message-Id: <199807211941.PAA12915@mbs.valinet.com> Reply-To: From: "Daniel Botkin" To: Subject: [footbag] Salute to Worlds, a Huge Success! Thanks especially to Yves Archambault, pilgrim, source and r'aison d'etre of competitive footbag in Quebec. Though injured and unable to play, Yves did not vacillate one inch in his commitment to the game! And much appreciation to multi-talented Martin Cote - and the rest of the diligent and determined Canadian clan and staff who worked (and played) their butts off last week and behind the scenes to pull it all off. Also salutations to the spirited, ten player strong Finn team led by Justin Sexton; to the Chaos crowd, both Illinois based and honorary -- talented and rowdy, and to the excellent Pacific Northwest contingent, the ever-strong Bay area tribe. And hail to the dozen or so "old" and proven veterans like Alan Peterson and Peter Shunny, Jody Welch, Tina Lewis and Lisa McDaniels, who year after year compete at a high level, without all that bothersome notoriety, wealth and hero-worship bestowed on top athletes of other unnamed sports. And a tip of the hat to the red hot core of shred, which continues to evolve and take quantum leaps forward every year. Thanks to the people who shlepped from baking east coast locales like Pa, NJ, NY, MD -- remote midwest outposts like Michigan, Nebraska and Chicago, and thanks to all other kicking fools, animators, jugglers, webmasters, (digital) photographers and spectators who gathered last week for yet another extremely fun (and successful) athletic foot-fest. Personally I sewed a few, taught a few, networked the footbag for peace website after parading through this multi-ethnic city with thousands of jubilant World Cup revelers... Teamed up at the 11th hour with wily ol' Jack Lentz to steal third in intermediate doubles net and also served my way to second in singles. But the most fun of all was hangin and hoofin it again with my man Jesse Whitworth, from Charlestown, Ill. Why you ask? Because Jessie has never lost the pure and unadulterated delight of that first time kicking a footbag. Driving home through the Vermont darkness I composed this short list. Email me additions... =-) Ten Ways to "Kick for Peace" by Daniel "Dog" 1. Give away your old and worn out footbags to novices in need of inspiration. 2. Kick with beginners. Kick with anyone, everyone, any time, anywhere. Encourage them like crazy. Let homeless and wandering footbaggers crash on your floor. 3. Pass before you drop. Support the achievement of the group ("hack") first. 4. Be a ROLE MODEL and a good influence on the sport. Let your game speak for you. 5. Develop your weak side. Encourage beginners to use both sides equally. 6. Perform for a crowd. Then get them involved. 7. Learn to sew. Proliferate the sport. Teach. 8. Carry a footbag in every pocket and look for excuses to kick, sew and network with new folks. 9. Use footbag in foreign countries to burst ugly stereotypes about aloof, ethnocentric Americans. 10. Confront violence and prejudice both in and out of the circle. Observe the Big Picture. Explain to all how the game symbolizes the cooperative paradigm. Live it. As I mentioned when I sent out the last Worlds announcements, full results down to last place and some killer digital photos taken by the staff photographer will be available within a couple of weeks. I'm still working on them. It's a *lot* of work, much facilitated by the hard work of Sharon Speck and Kevin Riemer. But it ain't trivial and I'm still catching up at work. So please be patient. I will announce when they're up. As for photos, see http://www.footbag.org/results/ and you'll see there are already about 35 photos from Worlds -- some of the best -- taken by Pierre Frigon, the professional photographer. (No, I don't have any of Evanne in that particular set, but the rest of you who aren't Evanne's relatives :-) may find it interesting.) There will also be many more photos added over the next couple of weeks, so keep checking What's New. See ya! :-) Steve
