First of all I would love to thank Adrian, Stewart, Damien, Lynton, Brendon, Pete Sez and Nina, Grant, John, and Trevor for all of their hospitality and help in planning my trip. You guys are awesome and I cannot wait until you come visit me in SF. I am so glad to have met up with all of you. I started off in Aukland, where I met up with the Kiwis (Adrian, Stew, and Damien). It was so much fun playing with these guys (I am hitting pdox drifter thanks to your tips). True freestylers in every sense of the word, looking forward to seeing you at future tourneys (Chicago 99?). Start saving up. New Zealand is a beautiful country with such varied natural beauty. From glaciers, to underground caves, to wonderful beaches, and rainforests. ONe of the most GORGEOUS countries I have ever visited. Then to Australia (starting in Melbourne) where I met up with Lynton and Brendon (as well as an awesome up and coming supporting cast of shredders- Chris and co.). Lynton picks up moves like a sponge... the kid has some awesome 3 add linkage and makes it look like ice cream cake. Thanks for putting me up and introducing me to Pete. Pete, Nina, and Sara... miss you guys... trip was awesome thanks so much for everything (I will never take my toast spread for granted again - but NO VEGEMITE please. Milo is good, though). Hope to see you all real soon. Further up the east coast I met up with Grant Corbett of Kitsilano fame... he is super chill and great to hang out with. Thanks for looking out for me... how was your holiday? Hope to see you in Vancouver or SF SOON! (Have you found any local net/takraw companions?). Then on the west coast of Australia I met up with the North Fremantle footbag club - Trevor and John. Had a chill little session with them (a shame you were out of comission, Trevor). These two are characters... they have sent out letters requesting sponsorship (and in some cases received replies) from the queen of england, local mexican restaurants (the founding of the club), the prime minister of Australia, and many others. It was so much fun chilling with you guys (and Jess, too!). Mmmmm... barramundi! Though I only spent a few days in Fiji, I had a blast there. I shredded in front of over a hundred natives at the annual BULA festival (Bula means cheers/welcome in Fijian). People were psyched to see footbag... it was during the world cup and I received accolades by being called Renaldo. I'd like to see him try and freestyle with a footbag. Anyways, I did not have any bags to sell or give out at this point, but if anyone is heading that way soon, please realize that there is much interest in learning the ways of footbag on this tropical paradise. Not that I do not have any other stories from my trip, or even footbag related ones), but I had to burden any who are not interested with the groovy details. Anyone who cares (or is planning a trip to those parts) feel free to drop me a line. I would also like to thank the CFA (Chard and Scott), Juliet Pendray, Forest Schradt, and all the others who helped me with contact info and the planning of my trip. I had a phenomenal time. Hmm. if it's *from* a mountain biking mag, and it says it's "seen at bike festivals" then how bad can their opinion really be? I don't publicly talk about the screaming racists and nihilistic, ultra-violent drug addicts who invade our circles on a regular basis without either giving _some_ evidence of humor (unless I don't want anyone to come to my club meetings), and if the magazine isn't meant to push biking then it's really, really counterproductive, know-dime-sayeen? Just a quick bulletin: Advance publicity for the Vancouver Open is going extremely well! Lots of advance newspaper articles, some radio stuff, colour posters allllllover the city, and wicked coverage for the whole of the morning show of VTV (yes a bunch of us stoked net players and freestylers got in gear and started kicking at 6am this morning aaaiiiii!). The effect of the CTV coverage from Worlds in Montreal is still being felt; more audience members on general kicking days, more brand new players, more folks walking up to say "Hey - I know what that is - that's footbag right?!" Now i keep choking on my prepared "hackysack is a brand name" spiel since its not even mentioned...(whoa...). This national repeat coverage also had the rather cool effect of inspiring sponsors :-) Thank you to the Worlds98 organizers!! Lastly to all of you who find it hard to wake up on Sunday morning for doubles - remember that the Sunday early-bird snakeboard draw waits fer no sluggards! However, because of extenuating circumstances, they have decided to wait and tie off at a later date. All other events at the Beaver Open will continue as planned, and due to this change, Late Nite at Ani's will return to it's normally scheduled time and the PG rating will be removed.
