After 13+ years of experience from footbag tournaments, being part of a production like this was quite interesting. We had 213 registrants; 11 no- shows, 16 3-person teams, and 2 2-person teams, for a total competitor field of 202 people and 172 placements. There are 6 basic categories and roughly 20 divisions for the individual and 8 divisions for team. First, we timed the whole event in FileMaker Pro on Macs. Unfortunately, one configuration error on my part lost 1/2 of our Transition data, and a separate programming oversight combined with a power loss wiped out the other 1/2 of our Transition data (The transitions are when the people change from the swim to the bike and from the bike to the run). The start and finish timing went great, though, without any data entry errors or lost data. It was a staggered start, so each idividual had a separate start time. The first one across the finish line was not necessarily the winner. But this is sort of beside the point. It took us one hour from the time the last runner crossed the finish line to start handing out awards. Considering the fact that I didn't get the DATA from the finish timing computer for 10 minutes (there was some confusion about whether all the runners had finished the race), and the fact that none of my pre-written scripts to do the place assigment would work because I was missing all my transition times, I thought an hour wasn't too bad. But lots of competitors complained about it! I was freaking out about my lost data (luckily the transition times are *nice* but not *necessary*), dealing with a couple of other requests for other data, very short on sleep, and wired on caffeine. It took me twice as long as it should have. But compared to alot of footbag tournaments, where all but the last 4 results are already known hours ahead of time, and getting to handing out awards still often takes several hours for a field of 200 competitors, I thought 1 hour wasn't too bad. Oh, well. Just a little comparison to chew on. ______________________________________ Derrick Fogle - the "Computer Guy" Missouri Lions Eye Research Foundation Heartland Lions Eye Banks dfogle@mlerf.org - www.mlerf.org From owner-footbag@footbag.org Thu May 13 07:40:58 1999 Received: (from majordom@localhost) by eniac.yak.net (8.9.3/8.9.3) id HAA04679 for FBfootbag-outgoing@eniac.yak.net; Thu, 13 May 1999 07:40:58 GMT X-Authentication-Warning: eniac.yak.net: majordom set sender to owner-footbag@footbag.org using -f Received: from dfw-ix4.ix.netcom.com (dfw-ix4.ix.netcom.com [206.214.98.4]) by Market.NET (8.8.7/8.8.5) with ESMTP id XAA22781 for ; Wed, 12 May 1999 23:26:36 -0700 Received: (from smap@localhost) by dfw-ix4.ix.netcom.com (8.8.4/8.8.4) id BAA03385 for ; Thu, 13 May 1999 01:26:32 -0500 (CDT) Received: from dal-tx50-40.ix.netcom.com(198.211.45.232) by dfw-ix4.ix.netcom.com via smap (V1.3) id rma003370; Thu May 13 01:26:29 1999 Message-ID: <373A7692.27F3@utdallas.edu> Date: Thu, 13 May 1999 01:52:02 -0500 From: Derric Scalf Reply-To: scalf@utdallas.edu X-Mailer: Mozilla 3.0 (Win95; I) MIME-Version: 1.0 To: footbag@footbag.org Subject: [footbag] one more post about Southern Regionals Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Sender: owner-footbag@footbag.org Ok. Truly, the best place to get a footbag easily is the WFA's online catalog, at http://worldfootbag.com/ -- you can pick exactly the kind you want and they will mail it to you no matter what country you're in, and no matter how upside down you may be. :-) Steve From owner-footbag@footbag.org Wed May 19 16:07:51 1999 Received: (from majordom@localhost) by eniac.yak.net (8.9.3/8.9.3) id QAA29891 for FBfootbag-outgoing@eniac.yak.net; Wed, 19 May 1999 16:07:51 GMT X-Authentication-Warning: eniac.yak.net: majordom set sender to owner-footbag@footbag.org using -f Received: from cky-home-pc.cisco.com. On Monday, the piece was aired during the sports coverage segment of the local 5:00 News. It got over two minutes of air time (including the enthused and silly anchor's comments, showing the 'great new sport called FOOTBAG'). It started with a Vince Bradley voice-over describing how net is played while displaying live action net shots on the screen. Then it switched to Steve Goldberg describing how a competitive freestyle routine works, while showing Eric Wulff doing tricks. It concluded with a Goldberg discussion and Manu demonstration of consecutives. Overall it looked great! We got to describe our own sport and the footage was excellent, with some nice jousts and slow-mo freestyle shots. They never bothered to mention our club, the University of Maryland or the ECFC, however. That just gives us an opportunity for a follow-up story. I'll be bringing a copy of the footage to Western Regionals and hopefully we'll be able to show it somewhere.
