Some results Freestyle. Vasek won first, Ryan took second, Yacine third, Honza fourth. Ryan had two drops in the finals. Vasek went dropless in the semis and in the finals. Vasek had over 400 adds in semis. Everybody partied super hard all week, played beautifullz. I saw some kid hit a ripstein from a zipper. Sunil hit janiwalker to bubba szmp egg to symp egg. I was in a circle where Vasek hit 6 or 7 6 add tricks in a row, and then passed it to me. I think it was food, whirlwind, spinning pdx blender, mullet, maelstrom, then something blry. just too much to report, but it was awesome. More later when I'm not getting robbed at an Internet cafe. oh, and Vasek won the shred contest. gonna go see police dogs now. love, Ken Somolinos From owner-freestyle@footbag.org Tue Aug 5 00:31:14 2003 Received: from llic.net (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by llic.net (8.12.3/8.12.3/Debian-6.4) with ESMTP id h757VE03016536 for ; Tue, 5 Aug 2003 00:31:14 -0700 Received: (from majordom@localhost) by llic.net (8.12.3/8.12.3/Debian-6.4) id h757VEUR016534 for freestyle-outgoing@list.footbag.org; Tue, 5 Aug 2003 00:31:14 -0700 X-Authentication-Warning: llic.net: majordom set sender to owner-freestyle@footbag.org using -f Received: from mail pickup service by hotmail.com with Microsoft SMTPSVC; Mon, 4 Aug 2003 22:07:57 -0700 Received: from 216.27.144.67 by by2fd.bay2.hotmail.msn.com with HTTP; Tue, 05 Aug 2003 05:07:57 GMT X-Originating-IP: [216.27.144.67] X-Originating-Email: [ghost2345@hotmail.com] From: "Stan Sagalovskiy" To: freestyle@footbag.org Subject: Re: [freestyle] Big Th3ory (Big 3 Theory...get it?) Perhaps splitting the scoring into difficulty and creativity categories would alleviate some of the problems. Basically, make the Sick 3 judging similar to routine judging. 6>6>6 may get 1st in difficulty, but whirling swirl>symposium whirling dragon>flipwalk may get 1st in creativity. In other words, the judges would have leeway for personal bias to judge what is "sick". I think the problem with Sick 3 is (or was, I don't know how it was judged at this year's Worlds) that we haven't defined "sick". With shred there's a raw trick/add formula that gives a number, with routines there're two categories to allow for more precise scoring, but with Sick 3 it's just what's "sicker", and that means different things to different people. I remember Rippin hit symp whirling swirl>pdx blender>ps whirl at Worlds 2001 (I think that's correct) and I thought it was sick, and someone else said, "eh, I guess, but those all link well." And let's hear more stories from this past week! I don't mean the scores, I mean who partied the hardest? -stan From owner-freestyle@footbag.org Tue Aug 5 23:57:16 2003 Received: from llic.net (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by llic.net (8.12.3/8.12.3/Debian-6.4) with ESMTP id h766vGkn004043 for ; Tue, 5 Aug 2003 23:57:16 -0700 Received: (from majordom@localhost) by llic.net (8.12.3/8.12.3/Debian-6.4) id h766vGNX004041 for freestyle-outgoing@list.footbag.org; Tue, 5 Aug 2003 23:57:16 -0700 X-Authentication-Warning: llic.net: majordom set sender to owner-freestyle@footbag.org using -f Received: from mail pickup service by hotmail.com with Microsoft SMTPSVC; Tue, 5 Aug 2003 22:17:58 -0700 Received: from 210.164.1.71 by lw12fd.law12.hotmail.msn.com with HTTP; Wed, 06 Aug 2003 05:17:58 GMT X-Originating-IP: [210.164.1.71] X-Originating-Email: [keninjapan02@hotmail.com] Reply-To: KenSomolinos@footbag.org From: "Ken Somolinos" To: freestyle@footbag.org Subject: [freestyle] Ken`s reflections on 2003 World Champs Date: Wed, 06 Aug 2003 14:17:58 +0900 Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; format=flowed Message-ID: X-OriginalArrivalTime: 06 Aug 2003 05:17:58.0635 (UTC) FILETIME=[198FABB0:01C35BDA] X-Scanned-By: Spam Scanner (MIMEDefang 2.21, footbag edition) Sender: owner-freestyle@footbag.org Shredders! Unburdened by time constraints, I now will share with you the real low-down on my experiences at worlds. First of all though, thank you to Dexter Struz, the CFA, the IFPA, and everybody else who put in countless hours of thankless work to make this happen. I don`t get a lot of vacation days, so thank you for making my days off that much more enjoyable. As mentioned earlier, this truly was one of the best worlds ever. Where to begin... Well, to start off with, this truly was a `world` championship. Unlike past footbag world champs, you needed more than just one hand to count all the nations that participated. Just off the top of my head, I played footbag with shredders from France, Slovenia, Slovakia, Poland, Germany, Russia, Czech Republic, New Zealand, Australia, Austria, Switzerland, Finland, Denmark, Japan, Canada, Hungary, and the United States. How incredible is that? All of us united by our love of cheap beer and booting around a beanbag, truly inspirational. Beyond the international aspect, this worlds was also a breakthrough year for women. I have never attended a tournament with so many shreditas, much less shreditas of such a high level of play. Jane Jones was hitting combos on demand from me like drifter-blender-torque, and doing almost everything both sides. I saw Nadine Bayeler hit a super clean blurriest, Caroline Bourgoine hit drifter-blur, Carol bust her usual super smooth combos, and just a slew of other female players hitting all manner of freestyle goodness. I truly believe that this is just the start, and that we will see the level of shredita play just take off from here. As I have often said in previous tournament reports, you NEED to go to tournaments just to party with friends. After 6 years in the sport, I`m thankful for having made so many friends in the community, and it is also cool knowing I have a place to stay and cool people to hang out with in so many parts of the globe. Even so, it`s hard staying in touch with everybody, which is part of what makes worlds so excellent: all your friends from Colorado, SF, Montreal, wherever-else all take time off work, conveniently meet up for a week in a beautiful and fun town, and want to party with you every single night. And the partying truly was epic. Every night people sampled Prague`s clubs while buying each other rounds of delicious, cheap Czech beer, and catching up on moronic escapades past, while engaging in new moronic escapades to be reminisced over at future tournaments. It`s just such a good vibe, if you have never been to a tournament (or worlds) , you`re just missing out. Special thanks to Hans Freller and Matt Baker for making the partying especially memorable this year. Nobody got hurt, except possibly Mika. Also making this Worlds one for the ages was the incredibly high level of play. To everybody who didn`t make it to Prague: I met like 6 kids who are way waaaaay better than you, and even if I could pronounce/remember their names, you still would have never heard of them. Seriously though, circles that I guess were considered `intermediate` at this tournament were just overflowing with triple dexes and long tripless strings. It was silly really. And the best part of all was that no matter the time of day, you could ALWAYS find a circle with people who could kick your ass. I`m serious, I think some Finns didn`t even sleep the whole week, they just played the entire time. Some random notable moments: Rippin` hitting phoenix-spinning ducking butterfly-tomahawk, Sunil hitting high plains-fury, Ales hitting `Alex Zerbe is the Greatest` (aka symple vortex), Ahren Gerhman`s epic one-on-one circle with Vasek (which you are guaranteed to see in the future on some video), having random European players ask me: `are you Tu or Tuan?`, me asking GF to hit ducking marius and him getting it on his first try, then him saying almost to himself in a calm, slightly surprised voice: `hm, that was my first 7`; my 2 man session with Tuuka where he hit a ripstein, then went for like 20 near tripless contacts; playing with Tuan Vu for the first time, 2 man session with Daryl outside the hostel until 8 in the morning; felix zenger hitting spinning ducking spinning osis, as well as super clean surging blenders; watching Eric Wulff roll-spike on Yves Archambault in a singles match, the French Connection hitting janiwalker in a routine, Vasek hitting a 6-7-8 combo and Tu Vu immediately yelling out: `Where`s 9-10-11?!?`, Vasek beatboxing while Matt Baker freestyle rapped after the Hall of Fame dinner; complaining that Vasek, Ales, and Eli were in my first round pool, only to find that Ryan, Honza and Daryl were in my semis pool; Ryan and Vasek`s music in the finals, the look on Yax`s face when he finished his finals routine; and so many more moments I will never forget, but are too embarassing or crass to share here. In short, this week f*ing ruled. Thank you to the organizers for setting it up, and thank you to all the players for partying and playing to hard every day and every night of the week. You made it one for the books. I just wanted to say that I was totally surprised when I saw at what a high level the girls were freestyling. I didn't expect them to be so good...they have all been so modest via email about what they're busting out! It was awesome to kick with Isabelle, Nadine, Patris, Hania, Hanna, Nora, Esther, Caro, Carol, Sunny, Jule, Fine, Anne, Verena, Diane, Hiromi (she didn't really get to kick because she's pregnant, but she made it ALL the way from Japan!), and many others. I know I'm forgetting some. I loved watching Jule kick -- she has such smooth style and nice spins...stylistically, she is my favorite woman freestyler to watch at the moment. I hope her knee heals up to be good and strong! She had to scratch from routines because of her knee (footbag related injury that she's had surgery for)...but luckily, Anne Busch was able to take her spot and compete after all. Anne is awesome too...so nice to have down-to-earth girls in this sport. Ester was not only the women's beer drinking champion, but also really cool to hang in a circle with. She had lots of tricks, long strings and was focusing a lot on skooling her osis stuff. Patris is the life of the party. So much fun kicking and partying with Patris. inspiring to see her linking her 2's and by the end of the week getting a handle on linking her infinities and conseq. ss butterflies. It was a blast cruising around Prague with Patris in our posse. Nadine was awesome -- saw her trying blurriest, and she hit the smoothest barflies on command every time. can't wait to see her add more big tricks to her repertoire. Isa was great...she has such solid foundation and kicks right up there with Nadine. I can't wait to see what happens when Nadine and Isa push themselves to be guiltless ... they'll be off the hook! Isa is a natural performer, so I'm sure we'll continue to hear her name more and more. Hania from Poland!!! Man, she totally took me by surprise. in her emails, she writes like she can barely do a mirage....then I kick with her at world's and she's busting almost guiltless strings with lots of 4's...I wish she could have hit the phoenix for me to post on Shreditas for trick of the week. soon enough we'll have it I'm sure!! she threw down in Shred 30 both rounds and had a great 2-minute routine prepared. Fine is good too...throwing in her dyno like it's bread and butter. to me, her distinctive style was that she does more osis type tricks than a lot of the other euro girls. I'm sure she'd hit blender 1st try if she tried it with dynos as smooth as hers. I'm guessing that fine and Jule kick together a lot because they have a similar touch with the bag...just as you can tell that Nadine and isa practice together by their distinctive styles as well. Diane was a solid player that I hadn't even heard of before world's. she is strong and was busting out lots of ducks in her strings. she was also nice enough to sit through all of the routines and count drops for the judges. that's A LOT of routines! Thanks Diane! Not to leave the North American girls out... Carol...what more can I say? She was kicking great. She's got that whirling swirl in the bank. Such a cool trick. Still has all her stepping and drifter type moves dialed. I'm stoked she'll be coming up to our Seattle footbag and juggling festival this fall. everyone should be there!!!!! lots of people will be representing! Sunny...I hadn't kicked with her since she chipped her femur trying a pdx whirl at CSS4. She's back in action now and I can't even tell she's taken any time off. Sunny is such a happy and positive person to be around...I loved kicking in a circle with her again. AND...representing Canada....CARO! Caro is sooo good! I haven't seen her kick in person since world's 2001, and I simply cannot believe how much she has improved her game. she's a shredder...and one of the only women kicking consistently guiltless all week! that's what I like to see...pushing the envelope. Caro does a lot of stepping and symposium stuff. ripwalks both sides, blurs, barrages, symp mirages and much much more. Caro is one of the reasons I'll have to keep skooling my game hard this year, otherwise, we may all get left in the dust Sorry for those I left out. I need to get off this computer for a little bit, but I just wanted to say what an awesome experience world's was for me...and a historical landmark for the women. it's the first time *EVER* that we've had women competitor's from outside of North America competing at world's (to the best of my knowledge). I hope everyone mentioned in this post and many more will be at world's in Montreal (I think) next year. oh man, I almost forgot one of the coolest things I saw all week was Verena's clean deep swirl at the end of her routine in semi's. One of the nicest swirls I've ever seen and she seemed to just came out of nowhere onto the freestyle scene...I think Euro's the week before was her first tournament ever. You can tell be her style that she's a natural shredder...just wait until she has more tricks wired and she'll be scarily good! -Jane
